HM (Hospital Corps) "A" School in San Antonio

Hi dancingmom66!  Orders may not happen until just before graduation.  In any case, FMTB isn’t a first duty station, it’s an additional eight weeks of training that nearly all corpsmen go through either directly after A School before reporting, or later on after the first duty station.

Hi Everyone, just wondering if anyone has heard anything definite about graduation date for around August 30? My sailor not sure.

My son is in BC now, not sure when he will PIR, still waiting for my letter. Question for those that have gone before me, how soon after PIR did they leave for A school? My son will be heading to San Antonio after BC for Corpsman school.

They leave about 2 days after PIR. We had an extra 2 days with our sailor after PIR before San Antonio.

Hi VenturaMari, my son graduated on 4/20 and he left for HM school the very next day.  We were able to spend time with him after PIR and at the airport before he left for San Antonio.

Hi dancingmom66, my sailor graduated HM school in April.  Maybe a third of his class went FMTB.  It sounds like FMTB is quite available.  Sometimes you get what you choose, sometimes not.  Also, orders for June 27 should be coming soon, but they can change right at any time.  My sailor was told one thing one week and the next week they changed. 

VenturaMari, we had Friday (after PIR) until 10pm and then spent 6 am until 10am  at the airport with our sailor before he flew down to San Antonio.  They start sending sailors to the airport in the middle of the night.  Just depends.

godisgoodallthetime my son started leave the day after corp school graduation and had 10 days before reporting to VA but some of his buddies went straight to thier next duty stations

Our son had to stick around the following day until his paperwork was completed. It was worth it since he enjoyed 2 weeks before reporting to his new assignment.

Hi my son is going to HM after PIR August 17Th. It looks like he will likely leave Great Lakes the day after PIR. I’m happy to be able to join support groups! 

Hey Nursecin, my son is going to HM after PIR august 3! He will most likely fly out on Saturday as well.

Good morning, My son is in class 135 at Fort Sam Houston and will graduate on July 26 but he doesn't know what time the graduation is.. Does anyone here heard from their sailor what time the graduation is and where it will be held?

Hi TriniMom and Chicago, graduations are usually held in the afternoons, 2pm, or 3pm.  Get there at least half hour early to find parking, buildings are not too far off though. Best to get your base pass the day before.

My son will be reporting to HM A school in September, coming from JAX though we are a CA family. We are new to this so looking forward to learning from the experience of those ahead of us.  Sounds like the program is 96 days but likely additional training afterward.  Is that normally also at Ft. Sam Houston or does additional training usually happen wherever they are assigned next?

My son, just got to A school on Saturday.  He is thinking of going GREEN SIDE.  Any other moms with sons/daughters thinking of going GS....West San Diego.  Good Luck to all our Sailors in their studies.

My son will be arriving in San Antonio very soon. He graduates BC 08/03. My question for you is, when did your daughter fly out of GL? I know everyone is different, but trying to get an idea if he will be there until sunday or fly out on Saturday.

Our son went to San Antonio after BC graduation as well.  After graduation, we had about 8 hours or so with him and he had to check back in at RTC.  All of the sailors who were going to San Antonio started going to the airport around midnight and flew out on Saturday.  Once you can get his flight information, which will most likely be the day of graduation, you can plan to go and be with him at the airport.  You can get a pass to go with him to his gate until he leaves depending on when your flight is.  Hope this helps.

Hi VenturaMari_ I was looking for your comment earlier. My Sailor also went to A school in San Antonio. We saw him after PIR and took him back to base that night.

He had told us what airport and what time he would be there. We got up at 2 and was at the airport by three that morning. It was awesome to see all the Sailors come in-there were three different buses that came.

We all started clapping and it was just an awesome experience. Depending on what time your Sailor's flight leaves you can stay with him the whole time. Ours left at 2:45pm so we were there that whole time.

It was a long night and day but it was worth every moment of it. That's when we brought his stuff that he wanted to so he could take it with him to A school.

Hi SusanKav- It depends on if he will go to C school after that and what his orders say. So yes he could have additional training. We are a Az. family. Welcome. 

Mine will be going to Jax next. How is it out there? Did you Sailor like it there?

Hey DereksMom- How have you been? Did you Sailor finish C school? Do they have a graduation service from that school to? Have they sent him somewhere else yet?

Mine went to Va for further training and then we will see where he goes after that. 

Hi Partyofseven, Things have been good, I hope you and your family have been doing well. Yes, our son graduated from his C-School and the ceremony is REALLY fast, not all the bells and whistles ;) He then was sent to NC for more training so not till September we will see where he will end up from there. It feels like the time flew by. He past his 1 year in the Navy back in June, he has grown up allot... :)

My son just got there and he was told he started classes tomorrow, 08/06

Warriormom, my so is so happy to be out of BC and on to his school. He is looking forward to starting classes. One of his roommates is from his BC division. There were a lot of sailors heading to San Antonio for school.

VenturaMari, I think my son is one of your son's roommates. PIR 8-3. He told me that someone from Great Lakes would be there with him.

My daughter is due to graduate from A School in San Antonio on December 11th.  I am reading as much as I can about graduation, so that I can start planning logistics for the event.  Does anyone know how many guests are permitted to attend the graduation ceremony?

Any idea of A school graduation for corpsman who began class first week of August, 2018? I anticipate early November?

Hello All, My son is also in the group starting HM in San Antonio today.  Does anyone have an idea of when graduation for this class will be?  Also, will they have Thanksgiving and Christmas off? I know class is 14 weeks but I think the holidays may stretch it out. 

SusanKav I don't know however my son thought he would receive information on Tuesday.  He did seem to think that he would be able to come home for Christmas, but I'm not sure.  My son was in div 371, what div was your son in?

I am woefully ignorant - I don't know what Division my son is in, I don't get that level of detail from him as he's older, probably on the old side for this group, coming from a different assignment, not fresh out of boot camp. It sounds like they may be able to take some leave at Thanksgiving or Christmas or both so that would likely make their graduation sometime in late January or early Feb?

My daughter is currently in BC and going to A school for HM1. Was thinking of getting her a watch as she currently does nth have one. Going into medical she will need one with a sweep hand.  Anyone have suggestions/ recommendations?  Thanks!!

Wcpunk4, he should be able to contact you anytime now, except during working hours.  I usually hear from my girl either 530am or after 500pm their time (central).  Hope that is helpful!

Does anyone know the start date of classes?  My son will be graduating basic Nov 30.  I curious to know if he will be on casual status for the month of Dec when he arrives at A school.  Any information would be appreciated. Thanks so much.
