No worries, TessaNator, didn't you see my smiley face? :D We are family and they all work for the common good. It's all good, Sea Sister!

Not only does cheesecake have dairy, so does cake which also has eggs and flour, which is a grain. Look at all the food groups there! Cake...the perfect food.

As far as visiting GC, check out the "Your Sailor's Schedule" document to the right and then do the math to figure out when a good time to visit is. They do love seeing familiar faces but we were not able to visit until PowerSchool graduation.

  • Mammagoose

Have any of you gone to visit your kiddo during the Christmas stand down? How has that worked out for your family?
  • TessaNator⚓️

Ellen said they can come home at Christmas. 7-10 days
  • JayDee659

It's my understanding that they cannot leave at the same time so they split the group between Christmas and New Years.  My daughter was able to get off for Christmas but at first they told her she would be part of the New Years rotation.

  • Mammagoose

You don't understand. My husband is a pastor and the week of Christmas is HORRIBLENESS in terms of family time. We usually go somewhere from Christmas Day to up to three weeks following Christmas anyway. We'd thought about going to goose creek area instead of anywhere else.....
  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Shoot, Mammagoose, that's too bad. Everything is navy time and that doesn't translate into convenience for anyone else. Only your sailor will be able to tell you what works, I'm afraid. I hope it does for you.

  • SailorsLIMom

My husband and son are doctors and are on call at unpredictable times during the big holidays.  Often, they leave the table--if they get there at all--to talk to patients or staff. Now for our kids, it's Navy time all the way.  For others who are "called" to a vocation, it's an opportunity to recognize why they're doing what they do.  We'll be glad to see DaughterSailor whenever she lets us know she's on her way!

  • bigsky21

AAACCCKKKKKK!!!! Son just found out he is leaving for GL on Aug 22....that's only 2 weeks away!! I'm excited for him, but holy cow, only two weeks notice :(

  • JayDee659

Bigsky21 welcome to the Navy.  You're lucky, I got 2 hours notice.  Enjoy your time!

  • bigsky21

2 hours!! Dang, I am lucky :) I need to make a list.....

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Oh, bigsky21, I'm sorry. Sometimes they just can't wait.

  • Mammagoose

I just wanted to know what it was like to go TO goose creek over Christmas stand down. We want to visit him not have him come home.
  • NickSydmom

    Do they get weekends off?
  • TessaNator⚓️

bigsky: I feel your pain.  My son got clearance on friday night and left the following wednesday.  Tried to cook all his favorite foods, take him to shooting range, go to movies, out to lunch w/grandma.....and more all in 5 days.  Ugh!  But did it!

  • bigsky21

ok, I don't feel so bad now about the 2 weeks! The worst thing is I have to go out of town for work next week and there's no way to get out of it :( Best I could do was get it cut down one day. Going to make the best of the two weekends I have!!

  • JayDee659

Bigsky, just enjoy your time and remember that you will see him again soon.
  • OR_NavyMomx2

Thought I'd reintroduce myself. :D I am the mom of a Sailor who just finished A School. He graduates on Friday. YAY!! I get him home Saturday.

  • ProudOfK

OR_NavyMom I thought I remembered you. Your son was in my sons brother div in boot camp. My son was in div 133. Nice to hear from you. Congrats to your son. About now I'm wishing my son was an MM. He won't graduate A school until Oct 205th.

  • CA flickermom

My son is really struggling with power school. He is discovering that going into the NUKE program is NOT what he wants to do, even though he is completely devoted to wanting to be in the Navy. He has high honor and integrity but is it true that the only way for him to change course is to fail out of power school? He is totally stressed and studying 70 hours a week and then yesterday a student took his own life adding to this sense of anxiety. I am struggling as to how to advise and help him. Is there no option for him to choose another path in the Navy? My husband believes if he just sticks it out he will have more leverage to change paths, but I see nothing to indicate that at all. All advice welcome.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

CA flickermom, I have no insight for you but I have a feeling someone here will be able to give you some info. I just want to say that being far away from our kiddos when they have problems promotes a feeling of helplessness and despair within us. Your son is sharing his struggles which is a good thing. You can let him know that you love him and support him no matter what. While you work on finding out what you can, know that we are praying for her and wishing you both all the best. N4Ms hugs, Sea Sister.

  • BunkerQB

A few years ago I posted the discussion titled " Surviving Nuke School" please send the info to your son asap. Good luck. I just bumped the discussion.
  • BoyWonderMom

CA flickermom, keep on encouraging your son to give it all he's got. I'm sure he's doing that right now and it's easier said than done. My son used to say that the lucky ones get re-rated, and he wasn't lucky enough so he kept on working hard because there was no other way. He struggled and He made it. There always seems to be additional stress to keep high grades. Not important at all, in the fleet every nuke is a nuke. If he can finish power school then he will be in a much better situation. The best to your sailor and to you.
  • NickSydmom

I have a friend who's son washed out. She went down for his graduation and found out he failed the final test. No graduation. Her son is a very smart kid, I have wondered if he tried to fail. He is choosing another line of work and will end up just fine. However things go at power school, your son is a smart cookie and will come out on top
  • Christie_Okie

How absolutely horrible that someone took their life!!! So unnecessary. Prayers to that family!!
  • TessaNator⚓️

BunkerQB: Can you be so kind as to post the info for "surviving nuke school"?   I think we all should read this and pass on to our nukes because at some point each and every one of them may need the pep talk.  Thanks!

  • BunkerQB

Tessa, it should be displayed at the top for group's "Discussion Forum" B'nuke mom also put in under PAGES (to the right of the comment wall column. It may be displayed differently if you are using an iPhone ( or equivalent) let me know if you still can't find it
  • JayDee659

Good morning!  So quiet with B'sNukeMom being gone.

My sailor keeps telling me that her picture has been taken several times by the ships photographer and it should be in the fb posts but I've not seen her once.  :(  I'm going to ask her if she's making a silly face or something.

NancyJo do you have a good IP chicken breast recipe?  I'm thinking I'll try something this weekend.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Here's a good basic recipe for an easy starter IP cook. I am far from what you'd call a veteran and it has to be easy for me.

    https://www.apinchofhealthy.com/instant-pot-chicken-breasts/

    Good luck!

  • JayDee659

Thanks NancyJo, that looks delicious!  I guess I shouldn't be reading it right before lunch.

  • NickSydmom

Is instant pot a pressure cooker? I go old school pressure cooker. My husband thinks they are dangerous and won't go in the kitchen when I'm using it
  • NickSydmom

Men are so funny,he uses a chainsaw all the time
  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Nicknukemom, that's funny! These Instant Pots have protection built in so it's next to impossible to have explosions like the old days. I'll confess I was kind of scared at first but it's a snap. The Instant Pot is pressure cooker/slow cooker/rice cooker, sautes, hard boils eggs and makes yogurt, depending on the model. It's like a wonder machine!

  • soccermom19

    Nicknukemom - LOL!!!

  • Erin

Hello ladies :) I was wondering how does the Nuke school run? Does it run by semesters trimesters or individualized by each Nuke that comes out of boot camp? My daughter's boot camp date keeps changing, so we were wondering if it's because of how the Nuke classes begin.
  • SailorsLIMom

I wondered the same thing: how could they have classes if everyone is arriving at different times?  It didn't seem like they would have their own individualized study program! ;) Once they get to GC, classes are formed.   It's actually straightforward: they wait until they have enough (or some other criterion) Sailors to begin the module. Of course, whether she will be an Electrician's Mate, an Electronics Tech, or  Machinist Mate will determine which subjects she takes.  I learned a lot from http://nuclearpowerprogram.blogspot.com/2012/02/what-is-best-navy-n....  Some of the Sailors who went through PIR with our daughter "classed up" as soon as they got to A school, and started classes before she did.  She was there for more than 2 weeks before her classes started. This is a time when you can see them--a great relief after Basic!

  • NickSydmom

Christie oakie, I think our boys are the only two nukes left in division 276. My son said there were two left including him. Your son is 276 right? I think our boys must be good friends by now:)
  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Erin, do you feel like you got an answer from SailorsLlMom? It would be nice if you could look and see a new class starts every September or every January, etc., but that isn't the case. Once your sailor phases up, there is a schedule of sorts but navy time prevails every time. The pages to the right give a real good picture of the nuke pipeline if things go by schedule. But things happen, so just keep in mind flexibility is key.

    Everybody got their red on?

  • JayDee659

NancyJo I've got red on and later today we're going out riding on our red motorcycle!

I don't know about you ladies, but I'm ready for the weekend.  My husband has a motorcycle trip planned for Sunday but I'm hoping that Saturday will be a day of lawn mowing and playing with my dogs.  It's supposed to be a beautiful weekend again here.  Bring it on!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Well, the phrase "Get your red on" becomes for you, JayDee, "Get on your red!" Motorcycle, that is. Sounds like fun!

My sailor is back from his underway and glad to be home. We are all hopeful that nothing happens with Korea. I listened to the governor of Guam give a very calm address to the citizens there this morning. I know that our military will do what they have to do. Prayers for a peaceful outcome.

  • JayDee659

I have a friend who's daughter is in Guam right now.  It's a bad deal.  Part of me can't believe they'd do something so stupid but I guess it depends on how self absorbed that crazy little man really is.  Praying for the best and for wisdom for our President and his advisers during these times.

  • TessaNator⚓️

Chellebelle: my son waited 6-7 months to go to boot camp after being accepted to nuke school. They have to get FBI clearance then wait for an opening in school. Takes time
  • KayCee

chellebelle - my son was accepted in March to the Nuke program and was in DEP until estimated Jan 2018.  At the beginning of July they called and said he was leaving for boot camp in three weeks.  He's been gone a little over two weeks now.  So it could happen quicker depending on clearance.

  • OR_NavyMomx2

My son ended up going to BC 4mo ahead of his original date. He got 2wks notice. It does depend on what their rate is and how many kids are set to go.

My son graduated A School this morning. HOOYAH!! He's on his way home now but stuck in Charlotte for the night. UGH!! They gave away his seat. He went to the USO to stay for the night and someone there took him to talk to other airlines to see if he could get out tonight. They ended up back at the original airline who said "Ooops" when they realized he was military. He got a food and hotel voucher. He sent me a video of it. It's a NIIICE hotel.

  • soccermom19

Hi everyone.  Does anyone out there have any advice or firsthand experience in changing rating.  My SR wrote me a letter to say he wants to be CTI.   I don't know what to advise him and I feel like helpless because I have nothing to offer him as far as advice.  He doesn't often tell me things so it must be really bothering him that he feels like he picked the wrong program.  I'm bothered because I want him to be fulfilled and happy with a Navy career like he wanted.

Anyone out there with experience on changing or advice of any kind would be most appreciated!!!

  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

I managed to get the top stuck on my instant pot the first time I used it and had to call customer service to get it off, LOL.

Craziness with NK. I am a bit concerned as I have not heard from my son in over a month.

  • JayDee659

COTwin I completely understand your being concerned as I would be too. I guess we have to hang on to the promise that no news is good news. The good part is that you've heard nothing. Nobody has come to your door, hang on to the faith that all is well. I have stopped watching the news then my Aunt called to ask if my daughter was okay. Almost completely blew my strong exterior that I'd put up. HUGS
  • TessaNator⚓️

OR_Navy mom: congrats! My son goes to nuke school next month. We are also from Oregon. What is his job, and how long was school?
My son will b a ET in nuke program....not sure how long...he thinks 1.5 yrs?
  • SailorsLIMom

I think it's reasonable to worry about Guam or any other place that another country has threatened to attack. Lives on both sides are bound to be lost in great numbers if NK goes off the rails. Our military leaders are the first ones to say "prevent and deter", rather than "attack."  The more I learn about our military, the prouder I am of their restraint and wisdom.

  • JayDee659

J's /S's mom you're right, an annoyance that should have been taken care of. I'm with you though, most of the time I'm not worried. But I do keep from obsessing over the news if possible.
  • Nukelukesmom

I have a question, ladies. My SR called us tonight for the first time since arriving at GL. He said that he has been told that he will have liberty Friday and Saturday after PIR and fly out for A school at GC on Sunday. I have read on these pages that the flights out are usually on Saturday. Has anyone else had their sailors fly out on Sunday? We would obviously love an extra day with him but need to make hotel arrangements for an extra day if he is nor leaving until Sunday.
