It's so risky to put yourself out there and be exposed to other people's comments. When I got accepted to grad school, a (good?) friend said, "Yeah, you only got in because of affirmative action!" And when I took our newly adopted daughter (now our Sailor) to pick up our son at elementary school when she was just a few weeks old (she's African-American, I'm white), the school nurse looked at her in her baby basket and said, "Well, SHE'S certainly not yours!" So rude, and what did she know? Our sailor finished college, but it didn't give her the structure and direction--or satisfaction--that she needs. She is finding all that in the Navy, bigtime. Plus, the skills--that's huge. Let the natterers just natter on. We know the effort our kids are putting in, and we applaud them every step of the way!
Well ladies, I suppose sometimes it is all in the company you keep and a matter of whether they know your child or not? I showed my picture all around at our fellowship dinner before church tonight and everyone had a lot of fun finding my son in the division picture. I never thought about his ears before, but I guess they were a distinguishing mark! The youth were impressed and one of the girls said, "He's so grown up, another commented, "He shaved his mustache." Which was never very dark, but has been there for almost five years now. It definitely boosted my spirits, as have your comments.
rjkj1 - I understand trying to balance out your praise. Our middle daughter got married the Saturday before PIR, and I must watch that I don't pour too much attention on my son. This was our second wedding of the summer and she was very disappointed that her brother wouldn't be there as he had been for the older sister's wedding a couple of weeks before boot camp.
This group continues to inspire me and leave me in awe. Such wisdom and good ol' common sense combined. Thanks, all, for being there for all of us.
I love that J's/S's has 2 sons at once! I imagine their home is bursting with happiness right about now. So great.
Chipmunk, I had to smile about your showing your picture at church and impressing the youth. I don't care how old you are, there is something about the uniform that just flutters the hearts. :D

Great thank you so much I will read the info. Got 2 calls from my daughter yesterday one when she arrived at the airport and she said that was it they wee taking her phone but I received another one at 11 midnight and she sounded so robotic like she was reading a script. Made me so sad I couldn't go back to sleep!! :(
Erin, I believe they do give them a script so that the call is quick. My daughter called at 2:35 am and my husband answered. I never got to talk to her, but I knew she was safe. Hang in there, it will get better.
Erin, I understand!! I thought it was actually an automated call. I was so busy trying to figure out if my recruit had actually realized I was on the phone and saying, hello, I love you, that I didn't really get most of the actual message. It wasn't till I heard my recruit ask someone else if that was all they were to say, that I knew it was a live call.
The first couple of weeks are the hardest, but they are safe.
Yep, that first scripted call is maybe 30 seconds if you are lucky! Be sure to keep your phone on you at all times and answer all calls - even if you don't recognize the number (you can always hang up if it's a sales call lol!). Hopefully you'll get a few more calls over the 8 weeks but it's no guarantee. Hang in there!
I downloaded the Call Recorder app while my son was in BC. I loved being able to re-listen to the few calls I got, any time. I still love it. Have a lot of deleting to do of other phone calls, but I do recommend it for Navy moms!! :D
Welcome to all the new moms with sailors in boot camp - brings back many memories - some good and some not so good - I think I had a similar feeling Erin when that midnight call came, I was trying to put the phone on speaker so my husband could hear too and by the time I did we heard a click and he was gone. But it truly does get better and when you see them at PIR and then on to A school it is all so so worth it!
I just got back Tuesday from a wonderful, wonderful time with our nuke son. My husband, special needs daughter and I all went down for almost a week. The 3 of us did some fun things in Charleston (like a carriage ride tour and harbor tour) when our son was in school but we got to see our nuke every evening and he stayed with us from Friday evening to early Sunday evening.
It is hard to not just burst with pride when I see how well he is doing so far and how much he seems to enjoy it. He really does seem so interested and loving what he is learning.
Weird - I'm having trouble getting on the website on my desktop but can access from my phone. Anyone else having issues this morning?
Desktop says "Our apologies - we're sorry, this social network is under maintenance. It should be available shortly so check back soon"
ProudofK - How wonderful that you got to visit! I'm so excited for you! Such cute pics!! Also excited to have my son here for his leave after grad! Does yours get to come home, too?
J's/S'smom - Yay! Both sailors at the same time! What a thrill!! Our gas prices suddenly went up, here in VA, by like 25c/gal!
B'sNukeMom - Seems to be working for me on my laptop. Weird!

B'sNukeMoM⚓️MM - I had issues with the website earlier this morning, I think it was on the server's end.
I forgot about RED Friday, but I had blue and red on for the past two days, does that count?!!!
WGW - our gas prices are going up here in OK as well. Glad we drove to PIR last weekend before the hurricane hit! We will probably see higher prices for awhile.
Welcome - Jerri, Shawna and Christian'sMiMa! - I am a newbie as well. My sailor graduated from PIR 8/25/17 and is at GC. They are having raining days according to what we were told on the phone last night. I hope the first dress uniform inspection went well this morning.
B'sNukeMoM - interesting that you mentioned having issues with the site. Yesterday all day I couldn't get it to refresh on my phone. I just thought no one had posted anything until I got home and saw all the posts. Today everything is working fine for me.
WonderGeekWoman - yes K is planning to come home for a week right after A school graduation. Really looking forward to having him in the house in a couple months.
Thanks for all the feedback - I'm a pretty private person so it was a bit of a stretch to post pictures - but I kine of start feeling like you all are family.
One other thing that I have been thinking these last few days that I almost feel guilty for thinking because my heart truly does go out to all of those that have faced such devastation in Texas - but the mom in me can't help but be thankful that it is not Charleston that got hit like this. I do hope they are spared a major hurricane this year.
I got one of the "new" form letters....not sure if this part is new or not, but with the letter was a page with the 4 graduation guests listed, and space where you have to fill in DL numbers, bdays etc and it says the list must be sent back and return postmarked within 7 days of receipt. I didn't know there was going to be a form I had to return, just thought that my son needed to put us on a list. Just want to make sure no one else misses the part where you have to return the form.....
Yes, that's what it looks like to me. Just waiting to hear back from my Dad if he's going to be able to go or not and then I'm putting mine in the mail.
Happy Labor Day weekend to all! - Prayers for safe travel and enjoy family visits or if like me, hoping to get projects done around the house, may you have a blessed weekend.
Today marks the 4th month of Mike's(my husband) passing from here to heaven. It is still hard to believe he is actually gone, though all the weeds in the garden remind me as do the orchids in the sun room and the empty bed next to me. I am OK and staying busy but evenings are hard. My sailor is in Japan and has sent many, many wonderful pictures....even the compartment hotel made it....the lights at the night places in Tokyo are over the top....he even sent a picture of a moth!! I did receive his mailing address and I am thinking the ship is soon to deploy.
My two youngest children are each moved into their new homes; we are preparing for an early December wedding; and another grandchild coming the end of January.
Ukulele classes will begin this month and I do enjoy teaching them!
For those new to the pipeling: it is stressful for all involved, but it is all OK and as I look back, the time is flying. Be an encourager and up lift them in prayer.
Have watched all of the "Murdock Mysteries", "Foyles War" and am working through "Father Brown".....all on Netflix! I have enjoyed the mysteries because of the historical aspects and the character development. I'd be open to any other series on Netflix that you have enjoyed.....please exclude suggestions that use crude language, sexual innuendo, and violence.....
KAM Mom - good to hear from you. I can't imagine how difficult it is. I've watched a lot more Netflix myself the last few months - I think to keep from missing my nuke too much. Here are 4 series that I think you may enjoy. The Doctor Blake, Blue Bloods, NCIS, and Shetland.

Thinking of you. I lost my daddy suddenly 18 years ago and it's still a struggle but I know he is always with me. He passed 8 days after my daughter was born. I know he is with her on her military journey.

Hi everyone! I love reading everyone's comments and seeing pics, even if I don't comment often.
I can relate to those who don't hear from their sailors often. Getting my son (who is in the STA-21 program, currently going to college) to call, text or email has been like pulling teeth. He's finding college to be a bit challenging, which has been a somewhat difficult adjustment. After the strictness and routine of the nuke pipeline it's been hard to adjust to more freedom and distractions. I'm so happy he chose to go into the Navy instead of going straight to college after HS. He is SO much more mature now.
KAM Mom, I agree with ProudOfK's Netflix suggestions. I would add Midsomer Murders, Royal Pains and Call The Midwife. I know these are tough times for you. Remember that we all care about you and send you N4M hugs!!
ProudOfK, I loved your pictures! The one of him walking toward the tennis courts made my heart ache for you. I so clearly remember how I felt when I would drop off my son there.
B'sNukeMoM, I didn't realize until today the significance of RED Friday. Sometimes I'm slow on the uptake. ;P
My heart is breaking for all those affected by hurricane Harvey. Here in the northwest we know about rain, but I can't fathom the amount they have gotten.
Hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Labor Day weekend.
KAM Mom - I am new so thanks for a brief understanding of your circumstances. My prayers for you and your family. - We are enjoying the Murdock Mysteries as well, but we are watching on DVD's from the library. My daughter and I also have watched the When Calls the Heart dvd's. I think those are put out by Hallmark - again checked out of the library.
PacNWmom - If you can request me as a friend that would be great - (I have accepted, but can't get the invites to work right for me yet.) - I would like to chat with you more re: STA-21 because that is the route my sailor actually wants to take, but not sure how easy it will be for him to be accepted into it.
KAM Mom - I loved both Call The Midwife and When Calls the Heart that PacNWmom and Chipmunk suggested. This made me think of a couple others that are different from the ones you said you'd been watching but that I think you may really enjoy. One is Monarch of the Glen - unfortunately I just looked and it does not seem to be on Netflix anymore. The other is Escape to the Country and what I like about it is seeing both the different houses in the English countryside and learning some historical tidbits about some of the English countryside.
KAMmom, has it been 4 months already? Oh my. I pray for continued peace for your heart. So glad to hear your sailor is doing well, what an adventure. Our sailor is now in Hawaii, waiting for Mr. Buzzbeck to finish fixing up his very small car for shipping. A bicycle isn't going to cut it, he is a lone wolf and needs to get away and explore off base.
My favorite Netflix series is Longmire, the sheriff of Absaroka Co WY. We don't have cable, but I watch these when visiting my folks.
Are you on your phone or a computer? I don't do social media on my phone, so I can't help you there. I go to "my page" then my "inbox". However you did it, I got your message. Does anyone have info on how to get PMs on a phone?
This is totally off subject, but has anyone done the Whole 30 diet? I'm doing it right now, and am finding it challenging. I'd love to hear others' experiences.
Watching top gun with my to-be nuke....know what I know changes every movie and tv show that has to do with the navy. I know it isn't real but...still hard.
PacNWmom - I think I finally got it. I am on a computer not a phone, and it may just have been slow coming in. Also, my husband told me to switch browsers. I will go read it now. Thanks!
PacNWmom, I haven't heard of the Whole 30 diet. Now I'm curious so I plan to look it up! The only diet that has ever worked for me is Atkins (< 20 carbs/day, no fruit, breads, etc.). But, it takes willpower. Easy when I'm desperate. I don't even bother during the holidays (football season, Valentines, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas--birthdays too). Ha ha! That explains the desperation the rest of the year. The fact is, there are certain times I do not want to deprive myself of enjoying special occasions. Exercise and lots of water are always key. Good luck!
Nicknukemom - I believe your son is a week behind mine. - I had a call last Sat evening asking me how to get shoe polish out of his dress whites! I know they were filling out paperwork, had some time on the email, had a 5K run and have been busy. My son did his own laundry and had a uniform inspection. Today, I know he had some time off to take care of personal business. It is late so I haven't heard back from him, but they have been dealing with things they need to, I am sure. Check out
Thanks for the info chipmunk. Which A school is your guy going through? I haven't got his roommate's name yet, that would be funny if they were roommates
My son arrived on July 25 and started A school on Aug 22. Had things to do everyday but could leave base after 4 on Friday thru Sun. Had to return to each night to base. His group just took their first major test and he scored 3.92 out of 4. He wad really nervous as he doesn't want the mandatory 25 hour study time!!
Soccer Mom - I hope your son's score was good enough to not have the mandatory study time.
Nicknukmom - I spoke to my son this morning. Like Soccer Mom said, he appears to have time off this weekend, including Monday, so was able to go take care of some business off base, yesterday. (Not knowing he had made it back to base from liberty - though had me very concerned - which is why I called him this morning before church)
He told me that some in his bc division have classed up, but he is still waiting and doing other things. There is something else they have to qualify for and those not in class are encouraged to get that done while waiting. He also volunteered to do a task and told the commander he liked organizing things, so he has been put in charge of an area that is similar to something he did during high school.
If you live near enough, you would probably be able to go see your son. Just because they have free time, doesn't necessarily mean they aren't busy, though.
Nicknukemom - Sorry, I missed your other comment. My son is going ET for Nuke school. His roommate has been there for five months he said, but our sons could still get classed up together. They had too many from his TG, so he is still in Indoc. It is my understanding that they have a lot of nukes go through bc in the summer. They wanted my son last year, but he still had a year of high school left. Due to his late birthday, I think they thought he would be old enough to have been active, instead of in DEP. From our conversation this morning, they can only have so many in a class at a time, so the others have to wait till more sailors show up.

Check out
