I'm glad I gave ya'll a little laugh on Friday!

My daughter was calling from the shop today as they're at sea. When she's in port she uses the Verizon travel pass. It's only $10 a day for plan limits. It worked great and we only paid for the days she used it.
  • Chipmunk

Gone for the afternoon and missed all the chatter!! I haven't gotten all the way through them and have to scoot again, but I wanted to chime in. I have my red on today because the thermometer read 41' outside today and I pulled out my red velour pants and hoodie!!! - At least the sun is shining!

JayDee- I did laugh out loud just now and my 14 year old son asked what I was laughing about, so I had to read the phone comments. - His response - "I am surprised someone would have stared at her, isn't that a common place for a phone?" Sorry, ladies, but he has lived with me too long and my cell goes with me everywhere - long before Navy life. I guess I am raising him right????

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Even though my son is out now I still keep my phone on me at all times - force of habit.  And besides, I still don't want to miss a call from him lol!

bigsky21 - I'll try to start reminding everyone on Thursday to wear their red on Friday.  I still have people at work that wear their red on Friday's ~ I love it.  I'm always on the lookout for new red tops - I just bought a cute red winter pullover sweater with jewel/beads on the shoulders at Kmart no less (Jaclyn Smith collection lol).  Can't wait for our weather to cool down so I can wear it.  One can never have too much red or anchors!

WhatsApp is another good app to use when they are deployed.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Have a great weekend everyone!

  • bigsky21

I have one red sweater....it has jewels on it too....bought it for a Christmas party one year :) I’ll have to hit the next Kohl’s sale :)
  • JayDee659

I got my sparkle anchor shirt at Cracker Barrel. Sometimes they have super cute clothes.

Pattip, Fiona looks like a hippo!

    My treat to myself.

  • MoMom

I haven’t heard from my boy in a while, either. =(
  • AngelsBreath

    Pooh'sMom it is beautiful

  • AngelsBreath

JayDee659 I'm like you. I keep my phone, money, keys and etc... in my bra and that's if I don't have no pockets. I have also had it in the side of my shoe, lol. I had to do that once i was out on the field helping with shoulder pads. Forgot it was there and starting looking for it everywhere until it went off. LOL i'm kind of forgetful.

  • AngelsBreath

I have a feeling my other son might not be home for Thanksgiving. At least I can talk or FaceTime him. My sons are my Pooh bears and my daughter is my Moo Moo girl. So if i ever slip you guys will not have your eyebrow raised at me. lol

  • Chipmunk

This came into my personal home email notifications with a link back to our main Nuke Mom page. I haven't been able to locate the discussion or blog where this might have orginated and I didn't want to leave the question unanswered, so posting it here.

A message from marebare to all members of NUKE moms on Navy For Moms!

my son will be graduating on the 22nd of Nov  and going to A school.  my Question is what can I bring him to boot camp to take with him?  Phone/ laptop/clothes?

I recommend bringing your sailor's phone and laptop if they have one. Also, a change of comfortable clothes and tennis shoes they like to run in. Other than that most things they want can be shipped to them, either from Amazon or your home. They will be able to purchase all toiletries and laundry supplies from the mini NEX.

  • Chipmunk

    Pooh'sMom - I love your mug!!  A definite treat!

MoMom - What stage is your son? BC, school, or deployed. Just FYI, I grew up in Rolla, MO.

  • Rime

Yes, bring your new sailor his computer and phone, comfortable undershorts will also be appreciated, and one or two comfortable clothes to wear in their rooms, but I'd recommend extra cash if possible, too. They have to set up like a dorm room housing, purchasing cleaning supplies and such. Mail rest later.
  • MoMom

Chipmunk, my son is almost through A school. I’m in SW Missouri. =)
  • Eaglemom01

B'sNukeMom-I love the reminders to wear RED on Fridays.  I have to wear team/school shirts on Fridays and we are not Red :(  Only my pre-k darlings see my red t-shirt under my school shirt when we jump and stretch!  Summers and vacationswill be a treat!

  • Erin

My daughter just left for Goose Creek today. She will be an MM and will start 11/8. She is so excited for this new chapter but nervous too. While they wait for classes to begin what do they do?
  • Erin

B’sNukeMoM⚓️MM question donthe sailirs have leave inbetween the A school and power school or power school and prototype? Or do they get a break when all 3 are over? Thank you in advance.
  • JayDee659

Erin my daughter is an MM also! Congratulations! They do paperwork and other fascinating stuff while they're waiting to class up. And even better, they get bored enough to call home often! :)
  • Chipmunk

Erin - Congratulations!! - And JayDee is right, you will most likely have more conversations now than when classes start, so enjoy. Your daughter will also be encouraged to do their UI's (Under Instructions) where they learn how to stand watch at various areas of NNPTC. This is a responsibility that they must accomplish before the end of A school, as I understand it. So, they recommend the sailors who are in Indoc, to accomplish it before they start classes.

  • Erin

JayDee659 yay that’s awesome congratulations to your daughter. Is she all done with school? An info would be awesome. My daughter is so excited. Nervous but excited for this new chapter. We were gonna go visit her in 2 weeks and bring some of her stuff to her. Are they allowed liberty right away on the weekends?
  • JayDee659

Erin, my daughter is through the pipeline and is on a carrier. It's an interesting journey, I think it's a little different for the females as they are a minority. My daughter said it was hard work but if you keep applying yourself it's all good.

We visited our daughter at Thanksgiving while she was in A school. She had phased up and earned privileges to leave the base. Make sure your daughter can do that before you visit, that way she can go do stuff with you.
  • Chipmunk

Erin - After Indoc, once they actually "class" up, they will have a week to two weeks of life skills and study skills before they actually start their school work. I am not sure what the testing schedule is for MM's but my son had 2 tests (1 per week) and another PFA that they had to pass before they "phased" up.

  • Erin

JayDee659 wow that’s awesome. Good for her for getting through everything I’m sure it wasn’t easy. Go you too for supporting her through it all. My daughter left with a nice group of sailors from boot camp. She is going to check about thanksgiving and the weekend we were gong to drive down to make sure. It seems like they can leave the base on weekends but have a curfew even in the beginning. Hope that still stands true!! Thank you for answering all of my questions! Hope your sailor is doing great!
  • Erin

Chipmunk okay great thank you so much for the information. My daughters cell phone broke when we gave it to her on Friday so she is communicating via text message on her laptop . Hope to get her a new phone.
  • JayDee659

Thanks Erin. Actually I got a nice surprise this morning. My daughter is back from her training mission early! She was sad about missing her first Halloween in her new house but it all worked out for her.

I'd guess hour daughter should be able to leave base by Thanksgiving but better safe than sorry. Our daughter had to wear her uniform but it worked out very as she got in to a couple places free =). Besides that she looked darn cute!
  • Erin

JayDee659 aww yay that is awesome. Do you live close to her?
  • JayDee659

Erin, we're about 9 hours apart. The good news is that her sister lives directly between us. It makes for a good meeting place.
  • Green2Blue

NNLori-my son graduated Friday (yeah!) and headed to GC yesterday.  He is ET and had told me they are starting ET class in 2 weeks. I know he left with at least 2 other ET's yesterday.  (Along with over 20 nukes in general.)

It was so great to see him and I have been trying to etch that last long hug into my memory!  I don't think we can be there for Thanksgiving, so I am hoping they can get them into something for Thanksgiving before long.  I will anxiously await to hear about leave around the other holidays, though!

  • ProudOfK

Green2blue congrats to your son from one ET mom to another. Glad you got to see him at PIR - isn't that great. Good luck to him in A school!

  • Northern Irish

Good evening. I am getting ready to become a "nuke" mom. So happy to be able to learn from all of you as my son progresses thru his schooling!
  • JayDee659

Northern Irish, this is a great group and I wouldn't have made it without these wonderful ladies.
  • CO-TwinSalorsMom

Way behind here. Back from my 4 day trip to Northern CA for my Dad's funeral and Military burial.  I got to be with my nuke for all that time. He enjoyed visiting with my rather large family. Last time he saw everyone was when he was 15. The service at the National Cemetery was pretty unbelievable.

    My nuke the tall one.

  • Chipmunk

Erin - I don't know what phone carrier you use, but AT&T was able to activate a new phone for my son, so he could keep his same phone number, and I just shipped it to him a week and half ago. His other phone was still working, but he wanted a smartphone. I had him transfer his contacts onto his computer and so when they activated the new phone, it just deactivated his former phone.  I shipped it to him priority mail and he got it in 2 days. We just set a PIN so we could lock the phone while it was in transit. I would discuss the PIN with your daughter beforehand, I had intended to use a dot swipe pattern we knew, but the AT&T guy already had it set to do a PIN. I did not activate the fingerprint, so my son could do that himself.

  • Chipmunk

CO-TwinSalorsMom - Thank you for sharing your wonderful family picture! I am glad that you had a nice visit with your sailor and am so happy that he was able to be with you during your father's funeral services. Hugs!

  • Buzzbeck

Northern Irish: ditto. This is a great group of Sea Sisters, so supportive.

CO-Twin: So nice to hear of the honor bestowed on your father, and the time with family and your sailor.
  • samsmom

Co-TwinSailorsMom, Good looking family!! Glad you got time with your nuke. Military funerals are so wonderful at the National Cemeteries. Praying for you and your family as you grieve.
  • JayDee659

COTwin, that' s a nice looking family!  I'm glad you had their support and that you got to spend some quality time with everyone.

I got a nice surprise over the weekend as my daughter returned early from her underway and is now a 2nd Class Petty Officer!  Woohoo!  Her Sr Chief in NJROTC always said that the wife should outrank the husband by one rank and apparently she took that to heart. :)

The best part of this in her mind is that she'll be home for Halloween.  She was pretty bummed about  missing her first Halloween in her new home.  She sounded pretty happy when we talked to her yesterday.  I'm just glad she's home.

  • Grannyofnine

Need some help please. My grandson has been in GC for 2 weeks now. He is still very homesick and sounds depressed every time I talk to him. I try to encourage him to leave his room and get out and meet new people but so far to no avail. I am vey worried about him. Any suggestions?
  • Pat L. in IL

Grannyofnine, Sent you a friend request. My Sailor is an Instructor at GC in A-school. Please private message me his name so maybe my sailor can check on him!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

I was on vacation in Wyoming since Tuesday so I missed loads, as is expected. This group does not let the grass grow!

JayDee, so happy for your daughter! How great is that! Hooyah! Also, you never fail to crack me up. People who know me know that my bra is a frequent phone holder but the ringing boob line is a keeper. I might just use that someday.

Talking about missed calls, it happened to me while I was in WY this last week. There was a lot of noise and fuss, and I noticed he had called. His voice message said he was about to get on the ship for an underway so I quickly tried to call back but his phone was already off. :^(  At least it's only an underway and not deployment. That would have been truly heartbreaking. He'll only be gone a short time. Still...

CoTwin, great family photo. I picked you out right away but a sailor out of uniform is not so easy. I think I picked him out though. I'm so glad your dad was remembered so well. He was one of our country's greatest generation and I'm sure you miss him.

I love the mug! Also, it took me a few years to really get into the habit but I do wear red every Friday. Now that it is in my head I never forget.

Chipmunk and MoMom, my SIL is from Cape Girardeau and met my daughter when they were both in nuclear engineering school in Rolla. What a small world. He's ex-nuke and they met in the reactor building on campus. It has been a great field for them both so that's something for your nukes to consider.

Well, back to the grindstone. It took me about an hour to catch up on posts. You gals keep things hopping and I love that.

  • Chipmunk

NancyJo - Small world indeed, I keep finding more connections to people on this group. My family moved to Rolla when I was 2 (siblings were older) in 1967, my father was a Mathematics professor there till he retired, and would not leave Rolla. Both my parents are now buried in the Veterans section, we stopped to see my mother's grave marker on our way home from PIR in Aug. - My husband and I met at a Bible School in Tulsa, but he returned to school and he went to UMR (now MS&T) - BS in Metallurgical Eng., then MS in Nuclear which is why I have connections with the NW folks because we lived in Richland, WA for 3 years!. Our sailor was making plans to go to MS&T to study Nuclear Eng, there, but then the Navy knocked on his door. Due to various circumstances, he decided that enlisting would be a good route for him to go first and then school afterwards. Rolla, will always be my hometown, no matter that I think I have lived in OKC almost longer. - Sorry to hear you missed your son's call! I am sure you had a wonderful vacation.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Monday!

    Yes, busy weekend on here!

PattiP - Wow, little Fiona isn't so little anymore but she's still cute as can be!  I have been watching your cold weather - we head to Ohio next week for my nephew's wedding and I'm not looking forward to the cold! Brrrrrr....

NancyJo - sorry you missed the call, but like you said thank goodness he's leaving on an underway and not deployment.  Glad you had a nice time in Wyoming ;D

CoTwin - sounds like a nice time visiting with your family and celebrating your dad's life.  Thanks for sharing the picture.

Somebody asked me about leave after A school (Erin I think). They often do get leave after A school - my son had almost 2 weeks - we were there for A school graduation - stayed through the Monday and then he & 3 other sailors headed to FL for a week for some R&R.  They have to request the time off but it wasn't an issue for my son.

JayDee - BZ to your nukette on her advancement!  Great job.  And I'm glad she's happy that she gets to be home for Halloween ;D (Sounds like she's more excited about that lol!)

Grannyofnine - continue to encourage your grandson.  Hopefully soon he'll make some good friends and he'll venture out more ~ remind him that nuke school can't be all work and no play.  They do need some down time to de-stress.

Chipmunk - wow, your husband will totally be able to relate to what your son is going through in school.  That works out well so you can pick his brain lol!

Anyone watching the World Series?  My team is out (Angels) but B is a Dodger Fan and since they are SoCal I've been rooting for them (but don't really care either way!).  Man it's been a good series.  Exciting game last night....bunch of my co-workers are Dodger fans - they're all sad this morning lol.  It's heading back to SoCal though so we'll see what happens tomorrow.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Welcome to our newest member ~ Northern Irish.

  • CSW

Yep, I'm a baseball fan. The company I work for did the lighting for both teams. We're Cubs fans, though, so rooting for the Dodgers. It was a good game.  Getting irritated at the NFL. They're going to lose fans if they don't stop kneeling!

Grannyofnine, just keep sending him little notes of love and smiles.  He'll get there. Remind him he needs to do watches, so getting out there and getting that done before school starts is a big help in workload and in meeting others.

  • NonnaB

My son is the "old man" on the boat so he spent quite a bit of his liberty port time escorting young, drunken pups back to the boat. Glad that Mr. B and I taught him how to be a responsible adult. Grannyofnine, encourage your young man to leave his room, even if only to walk around and get some fresh air; who knows, he may meet some kindred spirits on his outings.
  • NNLori

GreentoBlue- Congratulations to you rand your Sailor on his graduation!! Its a pretty amazing experience isn't it? My son has been in GC now for a little over a week. They told them a "couple weeks" also when they arrived. I wonder when they will really start???? LOL! I'm getting the feeling that you just never know anything for sure in the Navy. I do hope they start soon because my son is bored. He has graduated boot camp as RCPO to trash collector at GC...hahahaha!! I guess they just try to keep them busy as they wait. They will all run a 5k on Wednesday. Apparently they do that every week and the ET's are honored with an extra day of required PT. Apparently, according to my son, that the ET's  statistically have the worst scores in PT at boot camp so they try to keep them in shape. LOL.. Just a few little tid bits you might be interested in. Have a great Monday everyone!!

  • NNLori

Grannyofnine- my son is also in GC and has been there a little over a week. He spends a lot of time alone as well. His buddies are EM's and MM's and they are busy and will class up sooner than he will so he seems to end up alone a lot. His room mate has been there for a couple months and is in the midst of heavy school so he hardly ever sees him.  I think once they start school everything will change for them. Right now he is picking up trash (sounds wonderful) while he waits for school to start. He goes to the gym a lot.

  • Tx Mom of Far Away Nuke

Having your Nuke get to know a few of the Nukes of other Navy Moms can be so valuable.  My son had gone quiet and I was so frantic but another Navy Mom was able to question her son and tell me that he was fine.  That peace of mind...  priceless.  Thanks to all the Navy Moms that got me thru the first 2 years.
