JayDee, you are gung ho for sure if you are going to ski with an ear infection. Girl power! Be careful you don't overdo.

Meanwhile the little princess is home and doing fine. Bruised but will recover nicely.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

And B'sNuke, I would love to come warm up at your place, preferably pool side. Oh well, in my dreams.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

NancyJo - the pool is always open!  We just need us a cabana boy and we are good to go :-D

  • Wrestlingmomma

Thank you for the welcome!! My son is in basic right now with PIR date 2/9/18.  Then he will be off to the nuke A school.

  • Paul

Lol! It's 4 degrees here in sw iowa, light snow, and i grilled dinner tonight. Outside. Probably didn't have shoes on either. I don't remember.
I do know I go to the mailbox without shoes on every day. And that's to the curb btw, not the front door.
Temperature is always relative. What I always find humorous is everyone bundled up in November as it hits freezing and those same people running around outside with no coats in February when it warms up to 32.
  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Paul, you are a born Midwesterner. That's the spirit! I personally like the seasons and don't mind the cold usually. My sailor in San Diego is not missing the cold, though. The one thing they like about CA is the weather.

  • ProudOfK

PattiE - I grew up in northern Minnesota. How well I remember the blizzards and 80 below wind chill. I've often said that one thing you can say about Minnesotans - their not whimps. You can't be a wimp and survive there. On the other hand you can be a wimp and survive where I live now just fine - southeast Washington. I really don't miss those Minnesota winters.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Thursday!

Well that's just a NO NO NO Paul!  I could never do it!  I'm freezing here in SoCal - if it's below 75 it's too cold for me lol! My hubby always jokes that we are really limited as to where we can retire since I don't do well in cold weather.  Also, my mom is from Osage and I have some (distant) relatives still there.

Welcome to our newest member ~ Mom2kjzm!

Please be sure to read the pages to the right (11) under the member profiles and also take a look at the discussion forum above (hit "view all").  You'll find lots of good info in both places.

And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

  • JayDee659

We had ski patrol last night. The thermometer read 8 with a wind chill of 3.it was quite refreshing! I have to admit that skiing with a double ear infection is a challenge, ugh.

College daughter cut off then end of her left index finger last night. Poor baby, looks painful but her boyfriend took her to the urgent care and is taking good care of her.

The days until I see my girls are getting shorter!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

JayDee - wait, what?  She cut off the end of her finger?!?  Well that's no fun.  I hope everything will be ok!

Skiing in a wind chill of 3* with a double ear infection - no thank you!  I hope it went well for you and you had a nice hot totty when you were done!  Counting down the days for you!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Oh JayDee, so many challenges! Ear infections, polar temps, then amputation! Wow, a holiday to remember. I cut off about a half inch of my right ring finger about 10 years ago. I sympathize with your daughter. Well, all that will be put aside when you are all together again. Soon!

  • JayDee659

Nancy Jo, 2017 is ending with a bang but a new year is coming up!

  • kai cat

Hi Everyone!  I am new here! I am not actually here yet, my son is still in boot camp and will hopefully have his PIR 020918.  I just kind of wanted to hear from any others whose loved ones went right from boot camp to nuc school what they did or how the process worked for them in Chicago.  If you have a different place I should be writing in I always appreciate a little help!  Thank-you

  • Paul

Kai cat great question. I'm waiting to hear same answer so lurking
  • MoMom

Welcome, kai cat. You’ve definitely come to the right place, although you will probably also want to join Boot Camp Moms, if you haven’t already, and the group for your son’s PIR when it is up and running. Most of the moms here are much more knowledgeable than me; my son isn’t a great communicator! You’re sure to find answers to your questions.

My son’s PIR was July 14. He had liberty for the rest of the day, then left GL for O’Hare around midnight. His flight left around 6. We were able to wait with him at the airport until he boarded the plane.

    Again, welcome to the group!

  • E's ⚓proud⚓ mom

Kai cat, my son's PIR was 12/8. He was delayed in Great Lakes for two weeks for a missed signature in his medical file. He flew to GC last Thursday. He was able to get settled in his room and visit historic Charleston with his new friends from boot camp. He called two days after arriving in GC to let me know he could go home for a week so I drove to get him. He goes back 1/1 and will get started on the next step. He said the hardest part of boot camp is the mental, keeping his head straight with all the rules, troubles and yelling. He is really enjoying his new experience, though. I think he struggled most after PIR while he was delayed. They were working 20 hours a day so living on very little sleep and cold weather. He's not sure what's next at GC, but he's looking forward to getting started. I can post again when he gets further into this next adventure.

  • kai cat

Wow guys! Thanks for the replies already! I am hoping my son won't have to stay at GL after PIR because I think it would be hard for him also E's proud mom.  So, MoMom, you spent the Friday he graduated with him til around 7:30 then you went to o'hare around midnight with him and hung out with him?

  • JayDee659

Kai cat we also spent the day with our daughter after PIR then had her back at base around 7:30. We met her at Midway atv2:30 am, gave her her phone and some personal items. We were able to go through security with her. Turned out that my husband was on the same flight with her to Atlanta. How lucky was that?

If you haven't joined the boot camp moms and your PIR group you'll want to do that. They have the most up to date information on what the divisions are doing and PIR tips. Also if you can make it, sign up for Sarge Meet and Greet the night before PIR. It's a great time and he has good information.

    Welcome, enjoy the Nuke pipeline!

  • Chipmunk

E's ⚓proud⚓ mom - Glad your son finally made it to GL!  And that he was able to take some leave time to see you!

JayDee659 - sorry to hear about your daughter's finger and hope your ear infection is clearing up.

Paul & Kai Cat - There are the "common" occurrences for how time after PIR usually runs, and then there is the "Navy interruption" to your expectations. So, you plan for what is the most likely scenario which others have shared and can also be found in the PIR info on BC Moms, and then there is always the "exception to the rule" which others of us have experienced and it teaches all of us to be flexible.

Our experience was similar to what I expected, however, it took my son five hours after PIR to get his orders all signed off on to actually ship out early Sat. morning. He only spent 1 night in THU (temporary holding unit), where as others like E's son have spent days to weeks in GL before heading to GC, and then others experience is like MoMom's.

    Welcome aboard!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Welcome aboard, all you new Moms (& others!) It's so great to see you here. We all need each other and each new person brings a renewed sense of community. The documents to the right here on this page are chock full of great info. I referred to them often as time went by.

I dropped my son off at MEPS May 12, 2010 so I'm one of the old-timers. Every sailor's experience is unique but there are lots of commonalities too. Flexibility is key. We like to make plans but everything is "needs of the navy." My son flew out early the next day after PIR out of O'Hare although some sailors will fly out of Midway. It's all about getting a seat on a flight heading to Charleston. Back in the day it was rare to not leave right away.

There is just so much! Read the documents here and then if you have specific questions let them fly. I think we could write volumes about our own experiences. Remember, no question is stupid or small. If you don't know, ask!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Welcome to the group kai cat!

Definitely join this group for boot camp moms, and this one for PIR Reference Information.  Most will ship to GC either Saturday or Sunday after PIR and you should be able to wait at the airport with him (be prepared for it to be middle of the night or very early in the morning though!).

Be sure to read up on the pages to the right so you can get a head start on what to expect once he arrives in GC.  Also look through the discussion forum above for more info.  And of course, you can always ask questions!

Wishing everyone a Safe and Happy New Year!

  • Chipmunk

Christmas is now officially over for me. Today was the last of family visits with my sailor and all of his siblings, + one spouse (the other was at work.) Our oldest and her hubby drove in from TX this morning, after having driven from CO - where they spend their first Christmas as newlyweds with his family (we had them for Thanksgiving).  The reality that this could be our last Christmas together for a long time sinks in deeper and deeper. Which is why the veteran's encouragement is always so helpful.

I did have my red on today!!

NancyJo - we love to see pictures of your grandbabies and hear the tales of their antics, broken noses, tossed dollies and all!

  • Erin

Hello ladies. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and those with their sailors hope you enjoyed every second and those without sending Navy mom hugs. Question my daughter is halfway through A school almost in phase 3. She wanted to know how do the breaks work for holidays within the Nuclear pipeline? Thank you for your help and Happy New Year. Here’s to 2018. ❤️

  • momterp

We sent our sailor back to GC this morning on an early (6am departure!) flight —home visit officially over. He managed to get the flu a week in so it curtailed his activities significantly but we were glad to be able to provide some TLC. Hopefully he can regain some energy by the time classes restart on Wednesday. Happy New Year to you all!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

  • ProudOfK

And I just got up after napping after seeing our sailor off on a 5 am flight.  I think I may have slept about an hour and a half before we took him to the airport - so I'm sure glad I can just be lazy today.  momterp I was wondering about you when we were sitting at the airport - wondering just when you'd be going through the same thing (sending you a pm).  So sorry to hear about the flue - how awful.  It was so nice to have him home for 16 days - it was long enough to really relax and enjoy him.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Did you all see this float in the parade? This is my city!

  • SailorsLIMom

We're taking our Sailor to the airport tonight, already feeling sad.  I asked (jokingly) whether she could stay "just another two weeks?" and got a hearty "NO!"  Not because she doesn't love being home--she does--but because she loves the order and sense of purpose of being in the Navy. The big A school comp exam is coming up in late January...fingers crossed.  Great float B'sNukeMom---I'll never stop missing CA!.

  • Chipmunk

My son texted me yesterday and said, "Oh, one of my joked for wishes came true. NNPTC gave me a present of a finally finished laundry room for the Nautilus." So, he can quit carting his laundry so far!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi all - Happy 2018 and Happy Tuesday!

I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe New Year celebration. It was nice to see so many that had visits from their Sailor's - there were a lot of happy pictures posted on FB.  It's always hard to say "see ya later"......

Hopefully everyone has managed to avoid the flu bug.  I think I saw that JayDee got sick - ugh.....hopefully you are feeling better now as I know you are heading to see your sailor for your "Christmas" celebration.  Check in when you have a chance! Looking forward to some pictures :)

B is still in MI - heads back to VA tomorrow so hopefully the weather will cooperate.  I saw that VA is supposed to get snow Wed/Thurs.....Here in CA we're expecting another 80* day today.  I'm sure that many watching the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl yesterday will want to move our way - happens every year :)

Chipmunk - it's the little things but I'm sure that will make life easier for your son!

SailorsLIMom - funny how much they "like" the order.  Good for her - and she'll do great on her comp!

  • workingatit

I saw my sailor off early this morning on a 5 am flight.  I see from previous comments that many other sailors had early flights.  He had a connecting flight and made it in to Charleston at 9am. Glad my school was canceled for today due to our sub zero temps. Hoping for another day to recover from holidays. We have no idea when he can plan another visit and hope to find out more in the future.  When A school is completed maybe we will? hopefully. Just relieved to see he is doing well and and likes the navy life so far.

    Happy New Year!

  • JayDee659

B'sNukeMom I'm on the mend and will be OK to travel, I hope. 3 dogs for 12 hours in the car. Ugh.

My sailor was in the McArthur Park Mall in Norfolk before Christmas and was wanting to taste test some cheese from a kiosk. The lady told her "you have to go get your mommy before you can taste the cheese". The woman actually asked for an ID so my daughter could prove her age. To taste cheese. I hope that woman was ashamed of herself after she saw the military ID. Turns out that my daughter bought quite a bit of cheese despite being treated like that.  Then she stopped to buy wine and they never asked for ID.

  • bigsky21

    JayDee,

I have to agree asking for an ID to taste cheese is pretty silly - but I remember being married with my first child and still being asked for my ID. It was annoying then, but I appreciate looking younger than my years now ;)

Haven't been on in a while, trying to catch up with everyone's posts. I hope all had great holidays! I was lucky and had my sailor home for Christmas. I didn't get as much time with him as I would have liked as he was off visiting friends also, but I have to remind myself that when I left home for college I wasn't counting the days until I got to spend time with my parents again either, I was too busy being my own person and finding my way... Sometimes it's hard to be just the mom....

  • PacNWmom

JayDee and bigsky21 - your stories made me chuckle and shake my head. Why on Earth would one need to be a certain age to taste cheese? So silly. My older child, E (who is now 26), has a very young looking face and still gets carded at many places, while my sailor (21) has been legit shaving since 7th grade, and almost never gets carded (dating back to when he was 17 or 18).

In a similar vein, the summer after I got married I was visiting my family in California. My brother (who was 12 at the time), my dad and I went to an Oakland A's baseball game. It was cap giveaway day at the ballpark for all kids 12 and under. After we got through the gates my brother complained that they had hassled him about the cap, thinking he was too old, but eventually gave in. I sheepishly showed him the hat they had given me without any questioning. It's been a family joke ever since. LOL

I took my sailor shopping today for warm clothes. He wasn't at all prepared for the uber-cold weather they are predicting for much of the central and eastern part of the country. Heck, he wasn't prepared for a normal cold winter where he's going to school, much less the frigid temps they are predicting. Now he is much better prepared and I'm a happier Mama Bear. Will be sad in another couple of days, though, when I have to tell him goodbye. Boo hoo!

  • JayDee659

Ladies wish me luck today. We're leaving shortly to start a 10 hour drive to Norfolk to celebrate Christmas with our Nuke and her sister, who is driving up also. We're hoping to get in before the winter storm hits.

  • 3B'smom

JayDee - Be careful out there. I hope everyone has safe travels. Enjoy your family time!

  • Chipmunk

Regarding tasting cheese - Our Sam's store  gives out samples on regular basis and they won't allow children to sample without a parent present. It seems silly to us, (especially those with hungry boys!), but I think they do it because of all of the allergies. Although, most very allergic kids know what they can and can't eat. It is just a liability issue.

That said, I did chuckle at all of the "age" stories. My oldest was doing her student teaching her senior year in college at an elementary school and was mistaken for a 5th or 6th grade and told to report to the office to get a hall pass!!

JayDee and others, prayers for safe travels!! Those with snow, at least enjoy it and the cold. We just have very cold here in OKC, and no snow.

  • NNLori

Hey everyone, just trying to get caught up on all the news!! It was so great to have my son home for over 2 weeks! It's hard to have him leave but once it's done I always have such a sense of peace that he is doing what he is supposed to be doing. His grade point average is slowly rising as he "gets with the program" and his required hours of study are going down which makes his life a little nicer and easier to deal with. Those long study hours are grueling. I pray it continues. I hope you all had a great holiday. I'll be keeping an eye on the weather. It looks like GC will get 5-8 inches of snow!!! Oh my! That will be hard for them to handle I'm sure. I just hope they don't make all the sailor shovel!! I wouldn't put it past them LOL!!!

Glad you are feeling better JayDee

BNukesMom- I'm a little jealous of those in the warm weather but I it's sometimes nice to have an excuse to cuddle up under a blanket and watch a good movie or work on in door projects until the weather breaks. I just hope it doesn't last too long.

Chipmunk- That's so funny!! You know they are "adulting" when they are happy about a laundry room. LOL!!

    Have a great Wednesday everyone!!

  • bigsky21

It was great having my sailor for the holidays, and we all noticed the change in him - so much more grown up!! However, some things never change lol...son has only been gone a couple days and I'm already putting a package together of the things he forgot :D

FYI I talked to him last night and classes were cancelled today due to the expected snow - they are planning to start back up tomorrow. Safe travels to everyone who is out in the weather!!!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Wednesday!

Oh the age stories are too funny.  They will sure appreciate those as they get "older" lol.  PacNWmom you had me laughing ;-D

This is a crazy storm that is supposed to hit.  I hope everyone stays safe.  I heard they are calling it a "Bomb Cyclone" because of how fast it is supposed to drop in.  I'm crossing my fingers that B's flight is able to make it in to Norfolk tonight.  He doesn't land until 9:50pm (after a layover in Chicago).  I told him to be prepared for delays!

biksky21 and NNLori - glad you had nice visits with your Sailor's!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Safe travels JayDee!  I hope you get in to Norfolk before the storm hits!

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

B'sNuke, can I repost that photos of 2017 on Facebook?

  • Chipmunk

Son just chimed in from GC and said yes school was closed but just freezing rain day (no snow yet). He was just excited because it gave him an extra day to study for his test. Not much studying occurred over the holiday, since he was home with us!
