Hope you recover quickly NancyJo and Blanchemarie.

How did they get that giraffe up that tree?

  • CSW

What did the buffalo say to his son as he left for the Navy?

    Bison!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Hi all - Happy Thursday (almost Friday!!)

    lol CSW!

    How you doing today NancyJo?

Lots of moms headed to GC  (or already there) for graduations tomorrow.  Have fun everyone and hopefully you'll have a chance to meet some fellow nuke moms!

Sad news - a member of the Air Force Thunderbirds flight demonstration team was killed in a crash yesterday in Nevada.  They were going to perform out here by me on Saturday at the March Air Show but their appearance has now been cancelled.  Please pray for the team and their families.

  • CSW

Yes....we've had three military crashes in two days. We need to keep all those families and our military in prayers.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Don't forget to wear your RED tomorrow!

  • mugga

My son will be graduating boot camp soon and heading to Goose Creek. Will he have to buy sheets, towels, pillow, etc for his room? Any info would be appreciated.

  • Chipmunk

I will have my red top on and a navy blue sweater with a blue maxi skirt with a small white pattern, and blue eyeglasses. My youngest son sports a honey blond ponytail!!  Looking forward to possibly meeting folks in GC.

  • Chipmunk

mugga - There is a discussion above, A Sailors Needs for A school - scroll through it, especially the more recent comments and hopefully you will find most of the answers to your questions there.

But no, your son will not need to supply those items for his room. He will have to purchase laundry soap, toiletries, maybe an iron or ironing board or an ironing mat for his dress uniform and polishing supplies for his shoes.

Welcome to Nuke Moms, glad to have you aboard, be sure to look at the discussions above and the pages to the right.

Hi all - Happy Friday!  We finally made it!!!!

Chipmunk & everyone in GC - enjoy the day!!!!  BZ to all graduating today.  I hope some of you moms are able to meet up :)

CSW - love the smiling pig!

Welcome to our newest member ~ bkm4!

Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page.  Lots of good info there.  And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have!

  • JayDee659

Hi bkm4, glad you found us!

  • kai cat

Hello mugga! Just like chipmunk said, they don't need bedding also - my son and many others - want to buy the stuff they need themselves I have learned.  It will be their first chance to spend money to "support" themself and they have their new navy pride.  The other older sailor's (maybe their roomate) will also help them - so it is a good chance for them to bond/make friends with others already at GC.

I waited until my son asked me for something before I sent it. (although I did keep harassing him "do you need something" all the time! LOL)

  • Rebecca J

Same here...my son didn't want me to get him anything. He wanted to do it all himself. Kept telling me to stop worrying. I have learned!
Happy Friday everyone, and happy graduation to those in GC. It's so exciting and Charleston is a beautiful city!
  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

mugga - I found this old picture from when my son was in A school.  This was his room.  Very much like a dorm room - 4 of them share the bathroom.  And they do need a good lock for their cabinet.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Here's another old one that I thought was funny.  They would keep their running shoes lined up outside their rooms (he said they would be muddy from running and didn't want them in the room!)

  • mugga

Thank you everyone.  My son went to college for 2 years living in a dorm and an apt. I bought and set up everything. It will be nice to sit back and let him do his own thing. :)

  • Rebecca J

    Great picture!
  • mugga

B'sNukeMom...thank you for the pictures. The room looks nice

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Another new member ~ welcome to martym!

Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page.  And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have and to share a little about yourself!

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Wow Patti - I sure hope they've got him his papers by now but I'm not going to hold my breath lol.  I guess even after he's done it's still hurry up and wait!

    Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

  • Chipmunk

Congratulations to class 1801-T and Class 1812-A, Bravo Zulu on a job well done!!!

Welcome to all of our new members!!! Be sure to read the information above, and feel free to ask questions. Share a little about where you are at in your Navy journey. My son just graduated A school as an ET.

  • MoMom

Bravo Zulu to your son, Chipmunk! So happy for you!  Congratulations to both classes!

  • soccermom19

    NNLori - What's a Villa?

  • SubMom

Previous entries stated issues with packages not being received by sailors at GC. Once our sailor classed up we started having the same issue. One catch, though, I apparently wrote his class number down incorrectly! Thankfully the mail room still had his packages and letters and I now have his correct class number :) Hope everyone is having a great weekend!!

  • Chipmunk

SubMom - glad you figured out having the class number wrong!! - Maybe that is why my son said if you didn't know your sailors class number at first that it is okay to just put INDOC until you have it right. But that also explains why the colored duck tape would be helpful to identify.

I actually got to see the mailroom - I didn't spy in on it but saw where it was at and then later, a large sign about it being closed. I asked my sailor and he said, because no one needed to be picking up pkgs while they were in class. I also don't think they are allowed to pick up when in PT gear, so that means they have to go back to BEQ, change and then back to get package.

  • NNLori

soccermom19- If you google Foster Creek Recreational lodging you will see what they offer. It is on the base somewhere and they have 16 vacation rentals available from 2-4 bedroom homes. We reserved a 3 bedroom two story unit with 1 full bath and 2 half baths. It is nice because it has a living room and a kitchen so it gives you a chance to make a home cook meal for your sailor and their friends. It is a good price also. The website is not completely accurate with the price. It turns out to be $97.00 a night which I think is still a good price. I couldn't reserve it, only my son could do it. With him being so busy I felt bad asking him to do another thing but it worked out. I'm excited. I did hear that we may have issues with internet access though. But for the price I figure we will figure it out. Oh, there is a camp ground as well if someone has a camper and plan to drive, that would be a great option.

  • Pooh'sMom

While my Nuke was in Power School, I sent him a package from Amazon and told him multiple times it had arrived to the mail room.  With the intense study schedule, he made the choice that it wasn't the priority.  It was returned to Amazon and my account was credited.  I appreciated his dedication to his studies, and was attempting to send him study snacks galore, but . . .

So I learned not to send him anything.  LOL!  (Until he was in Prototype!)

  • Rebecca J

Poohsmom ...my son was the same way. Please mom dont send me anything. It has been a process of letting go and letting him grow up.
  • SubMom

Our son called yesterday and we talked for over an hour! I know time is limited with the schedule that they have so we are so very grateful for any calls. With that said, during our conversation he had a squirrel moment - literally. A squirrel got in and was running up and down the hall :)

  • SubMom

Oh I forgot! Our son said they covered circuitry in class and it made total sense. He thanked his dad and another friend who have electrical backgrounds. It is so cool when "the dots connect"!!

  • soccermom19

SubMom  - LOL, squirrel moment had to be really funny,

Good for your sailor about circuitry!!!  That's just great.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

    Love those pics, B'sNuke!

PattiP, that old-days carrier pic is astounding. I wonder if guys had to be shoveling all day or how that worked? Nukes work hard for their training but it beats shoveling coal all day!

Congrats to all those classing up. Woot! Woot!

BTW my sailor was also one of those "don't send anything" jpeople. The only time I really sent much was when he was deployed. Those boxes are really appreciated no matter what your sailor tells you. I also learned you can send just about anything. What your sailor might decide s/he doesn't like, there's bound to be somebody who does.

  • Tx Mom of Far Away Nuke

While my son was at school, he didn't want things sent to him because the easiest way to keep his room clean was to avoid clutter.  Anything sent to him had to be stowed away somewhere.  Just my experience.  :)  And that only applies at school - deployment is something different.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

    Hi all - Happy Monday!

Haha - the squirrel story is funny - can just imagine the little guy running around!

NancyJo - how you doing?  Seeing things clearly now?

We did more packing & cleaning at my mom's this weekend.  Managed to "twinge" my lower back.  I guess I can't complain too much since I've managed to go over a month without hurting it lol.  I just hope it's better by the weekend for my nephews wedding.  B flies in Thursday night, I'm so excited.

The air show was this weekend at March Air Base - we were heading to my moms and stopped at Costco to get gas. While we were there the B2 Stealth Bomber flew directly overhead.  It was so awesome!  It's amazing how massive it is.

Chipmunk - Hopefully you got to see a little more of the area where they live, etc.  When we visited for A school grad B took us up to his room.  Dad was able to go inside but I wasn't allowed - no females were allowed in the rooms - but I was able to look in the doorway.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Here's the phone # for the Foster Creek Villas (on base): 843.794.2120.  Usually your sailor will have to make the reservation but I know some parents have got lucky & been able to book it themselves.  They have 1, 2 & 3 bedrooms available.

    Here's an updated website:

    https://www.jbcharleston.com/lodging/foster-creek/

I also updated it in the Hotels, villas, other places to book for a visit discussion in the discussion forum above.

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

Eyes are doing fine. Will still need correction due to severe astigmatism so I will see Optometrist this week and go from there. I will go glasses at first and hopefully when the eyes are fully healed go to contacts. Getting older (I refuse to say old just yet) sucks.

Counting down days now for the end of deployment. DIL is trying to plan homecoming. As many of you know, nukes are generally first on, last off. Since this is his last homecoming she is hoping to give the kids a taste of it. Our 10-yr-old should remember someday, and maybe the 5yo, She hopes my son can give her a general time when he will disembark, if that's the correct term. Yeehaw, this mama can hardly wait!

  • The Hammer

Planning my first trip to Goose Creek to bring my sailor his car in June. Anyone ever stay at the Wingate by Wyndham in Charleston?

  • NancyJo (NNPTC)

I stayed at Villas too. Very handy for sailor, and large enough that I could have accommodated more people. Looking back I could have asked my ex since he came alone and I had 2 bedrooms. Another family there for grad was a nuke mom I connected with here (still around mommajo?) who also stayed at the Villas. We met up and we had a BBQ on their patio. Villas are dated but clean and well-supplied. You have a kitchen and laundry, can watch TV, dining room. I would recommend.

  • WearsLargeHats

Hammer, that is where we usually stayed. Not the cheapest, but good location, clean, comfortable, all nonsmoking. Right off the interstate. The only problem is the left turn leaving the Charleston Southern campus going out toward GC. Allow a few extra minutes at peak traffic.

  • Freebird

Ok, so how many sailors have cars at A-school?  Keep telling mine he does not need a car until he starts Power school, but not going over well.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Mine didn't get his car until he was heading to Prototype!  We shipped it to him about a month before he left for NY.

  • JayDee659

Freebird my daughter got  her car in the middle of A School. She was really generous about running the kids without cars and many are willing to help out those without wheels.  There is no right or wrong answer, it's what is best for your sailor.

  • Rebecca J

Mine did get his car right away. My daughter took it down to him. It meant a lot for him to have it.
  • AZ2OH2IL2UT

Freebird We shipped a car to our son a couple of months after he was in A school. He is now in Power School. Now with that being said, we are dealing with the state of Utah wanting us to have an emission test done. I contacted the DMV here in Utah and let them know that my son has the car in South Carolina and is NOT registering the car in SC. He maintained his Utah license and we maintained the registration in Utah as well. The car in NOT in my son's name, but he is using the car while in SC. We let the DMV know that the car was with our son who is only in SC for the military and school. They said we could apply for an temporary exemption. The problem is the state wants to know a date of when the car will be back in UTAH. We have no clue when the car or even IF the car will EVER be back in Utah.  It is so frustrating.

  • 3B'smom

My son is in power school. He did not have his own car before joining the Navy. He has no desire to have one now. His plan is to buy "an old beater" before prototype that he can turn around and sell when he is done. Honestly, I don't think he would buy one then if it wasn't required.

  • Buzzbeck

Mr Buzzbeck drove our sailor's car to him as early as possible while in A School. He's kind of a lone wolf and loved driving to the beach, buying a shrimp basket or fresh peanuts on the way, etc. A great way to unwind. It is an old beater. It was driven back home after prototype.

Chipmunk, your self description reminds me of what Mr Buzzbeck said 1 year ago at prototype graduation: "Wait, you want me to find 2 Navy moms in a crowd, called Jaycee and Kammom, wearing navy blue and white, huh?"

Mr Buzzbeck favorite place to stay was a Ladson KOA cabin. Clean, cheap, quiet.

Nancy Jo, so happy for your sailor and his family.

B's nuke, hope your back pain goes away soon. Seems like helping someone move often results in a back spasm.

  • JayDee659

Buzzbeck it all worked out and we found each other! I just happened to be sitting behind KamMom and Mr Buzzbeck came up to me and asked if I was JayDee! Worked out perfectly if you ask me. Would only have been better if you'd been there.

  • Chipmunk

Hammer - I stayed at Days Inn in GC. It is the closest motel to NNPTC, just up Red Bank Rd and I was happy with the rooms and breakfast. It is also a Wyndham property if you are using rewards.

    Soccermom19 - I sent you a message.

Buzzbeck - I made sure to stand up (I was looking to see that the older couple we had meet at the motel had made it in), but figured I would make my appearance known. Didn't meet anyone from here, but some sitting near us were on FB.

B's - Hope your back is feeling better.

Freebird - they don't have to have a car till Prototype, but having a vehicle is useful due to their location.
