B'sNukeMom, thank you for all the daily affirmations. I always look forward to them

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Awe NonnaB - thanks!  Just trying to spread a little sunshine lol!

  • Chipmunk

Good Morning NonnaB - I hope things are going well for you.

B'sNukeMom - thanks for bringing us little rays of sunshine!!

I have been super busy, and I have another deadline this morning, but I finally had a nice long conversation with my sailor and DIL last weekend. I have information to share on what to do while waiting for Prototype to start but just have not had a chance to post it here yet.

I know we have several Nuke Moms who are in the BC Mom group, so looking forward to seeing new names and faces on this page as they come to say Hi!

How are all of my friends doing?  Be sure to send me an update on your sailors. I cannot believe it has been almost 5 years since I first found this site and was trying to figure out what to expect for PIR.

Hi all.  So far, it seems that my son is making good choices during his on hold time for Prototype. In addition to learning more about the area between duty and time off, he is taking this time to work out and figure out what he would like to make/package for meals. As for the training/educational aspect of Prototype for those sailors while on hold, am curious if there is a strategy to take advantage of this time to learn some of those areas they felt weak on. Are there any recommendations for this?

  • Chipmunk

emilyl - I put in a request to my son for some information, I will see if he is able to share anything or not.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

emilyl - here's a discussion from a former nuke regarding prototype (he did proto in NY but it's still basically the same process):

    Nuke School - Prototype

  • Chipmunk

emilyl - With regards to studying before Prototype this is what my son said. " Honestly no, there's not much of prototype you can study beforehand except maybe some math.

A lot of it is System Knowledge, which is specific to the ship you are on.
Most of the point of Prototype is to teach you how to qualify on the Fleet Ship, and because it's required by Congress and the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission)
I suppose they could review some Radiation Fundamentals, that's Google-able."

Hi all - Happy Monday!  Today is my youngest's 28th birthday!  Gahhhh....how did that happen lol!

  • Pizanche

B'sNukeMom - happy birthday to your Baby

  • emilyl

Hi all - Thank you for the input in relation to on holds prior to Prototype! Believed this was probably the case, though wanted to ensure he was not missing out on opportunities such as this. Boy, what an adventure it has been so far. Wishing everyone and their sailors well!

  • KayCee

Hello Everyone - gosh, I can't remember the last time I checked in.  For some reason, I haven't had any notifications for months and I have been so busy that it just didn't occur to me that I was not receiving any.  I will check my settings later, but just wanted to take a quick moment to pop on and say "HELLO" and hope everyone is enjoying summer.  Some have started school in places already...

My sailor is into his second deployment now.  Since he entered bootcamp in 2017, I truly haven't had much contact or quality conversation with him.  After he graduated and left GC he went directly to his boat and has had rare time on land (it seems) with all the underways and deployments.

Happy Birthday to your youngest B'sNukeMom!

  • Chipmunk

Happy Birthday to your youngest, B'sNukeMom!!

KayCee - recently, I was reminded that you can also accidently turn off notification in your emails if you click on the wrong link in that feed as well. Or if you click the "stop following" here below the comment wall.  Hard to believe yours has been on two deployments and mine has only been on underways for the most part.

  • NonnaB

B'sNuke, Happy Birthday to your youngest. My baby is 31, so I know what you mean.

  • Chipmunk

emilyl - It also occurred to me that if your sailor has not gotten his passport yet, that would be another good thing for him to do, during this time of waiting. - Be sure to have him look for a more dedicated Passport office, not one that is done just at the post office in their regular postal line, as they have to wait on the postal customers first. My daughter waited almost all day not realizing there was another location she could have gone to instead that would have been faster.

  • emilyl

Great idea on the passport.  He already has one, though it is at home which does not do him a bit of good there.  Will pack it and hand deliver next time I see him.  Imagine that it is not something he would need for the next so many months.  Thanks for all the input!

  • Chipmunk

emilyl - My sailor also purchased a small sized security safe, once he had his passport and some other papers that he wanted to make sure stayed together and with him. I don't think he did that until Prototype though.

    Good Morning and Happy Tuesday!

B's command required them to get their passport.  I definitely recommend it for everyone!

And I second the portable safe - B had one too (well, still has it lol) and he kept his important papers in it.  Always a good idea.

Also - renters insurance is definitely recommended.  Look into a policy that will also cover their uniforms.  Policies are fairly inexpensive but can be so worth it if something happens!

    Better safe than sorry!

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMom - Make sure both your son and DIL have a key to that safe. My DIL needed some important papers, while my son was out to sea. Evidently, he had the key (s) as well!!  Needless to say, she has her own key now.

A Calvin and Hobbs funny to share with everyone - my husband sends the family links to the ones he thinks are apropos.

My son got renters insurance through USAA and it does include uniforms. Great option! The small safe sounds like a great idea too! As a note to others, I just joined Facebook Navy Nuke - Goose Creek buy/sell/swap. Seems like a great place for those that need beds/furniture and such to look at. Seems like many are virtually giving their stuff away as they move on to other adventures.

  • Chipmunk

Good Morning Everyone!!! How are we doing today?

emilyl - That is good to know, I could not recall if my son's uniforms were under his renter's insurance or not.

CSW - Thinking about you - I hope all is well.

NancyJo - I drove by the shrine the other day and I thought about you. How is your son doing with his new job on the other side of the Navy? Are the kids and your DIL getting to meet some neighbors and make new friends?

  • Chipmunk

This weekend marks my sailor's 5th anniversary since PIR and flying to GC!! Boy, it seems like yesterday in one sense but also so long ago. So much has happened in my life, his, and our family, but the one thing that has changed from what we expected, is that he will not be coming home. He has a new home with his wife. I am so happy for him in one respect, but I never thought that it would also be so hard. My girls who went to college, all came home and spent at least a year back in our house, they transitioned to their own homes, got married, along with working fulltime. Not the same for my sailor, and he is also having to adjust to it as well. Less than a year now for him.

Chipmunk - boy I can relate!  B left back in 2012 and never "returned" home.  Sure he visits but he married a fellow nuke and he (they) went from Virginia to her hometown in Michigan. Don't know if they'll ever live in CA - too expensive.  We talk often and visit at least a couple of times a year (this year is a good one - we'll see them a total of 4 times!) but it's not quite the same.  I do miss them!  But they are sure happy and that makes me happy.  At least the youngest plans on staying in CA.  His fiancee is here and her family is local so she doesn't want to move away - which is a plus for me!

  • Chipmunk

B'sNukeMom - I guess I had missed the fact that your youngest was back near you. That is wonderful and I am glad they will be close by.

  • B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN(Vet)

Chipmunk - he was in Nebraska "technically" for 2 years (shortened due to covid).  Now he's back home coaching locally.  We are happy to have him back and of course his fiancee is ecstatic lol!

  • Chipmunk

I am glad that he is able to be back close to home!!

Happy Tuesday, Nuke Moms!  I hope y'all are all doing well.  I have been slow to check-in - mostly because every time I login to this page (and the BC page), I cry like a baby.  :-(  I just feel everyone's emotions as if they were my own.

But I wanted to say Hi and say Thank you for contributing to this page.  When I do login, it is so encouraging!  :-)

  • Chipmunk

MomofJoseph - It is good to hear from you!!! How far along is your sailor now? I hope that you are able to attend his graduations.

  • MomofJoseph

Chipmunk - Thanks for asking.  He graduated from A School last month, and we were able to attend (which was great).  He is currently on T-Track, but will have leave soon!  Woo hoo!  He starts Power School next month.

  • Chipmunk

MomofJoseph - Enjoy your time with your son. I recall now you posting about graduation. I apologize, I can no longer keep up with all of the different ones of you and your sailors and where they are at in training.
