AmeliaJW3665 - I would reach out to the library directly and ask them. If not for this time maybe they will take them for another giveaway! That's kind of you to offer ;-D
B's Nukemom those pictures are priceless! Enjoy every minute. We've been trying to help our friends in WNC now (we moved down the mountain but have gotten our power back now so are not in the thick of it) - please send your prayers. So many friends lost everything - my daughter and friends hiked into a family friend's house to get them water and some non perishable food and even a bag of ice. I was so proud. sadly there are so many people still missing - not sure people outside here are seeing entire towns wiped off the map.
This is all that keeps my mind off of the approaching deployment of my son's ship to Japan. Literally stalking the webcam to see the ship. Hope you are all well.
My nephew and his family live right outside of Asheville and they said the devastation is heartbreaking. He said the amount of rain they received was unbelievable. Continued prayers for all.
And yes, lil Oliver is adorable (although I am just a little biased, lol!).
My thoughts and prayers for all those that are affected by the storm. I have seen pictures and videos and my heart breaks.
I trolled YT all day yesterday waiting to see my son's ship leave SD. I didn't get anything done all day, watching the live feed and reading the comments. I didn't want to miss it. Heard lots of radio traffic, though. And then I see the Whites line the flight deck at 3pm their time, 6pm my time. I was so proud to see that his journey to Japan has officially began. I also cried because there is just a different feeling knowing that he is no longer on US soil. He says life on the ship isn't that bad, but we will see when its weeks on end, not just days. He turned 21 while out to sea, but got to enjoy a few drinks with a couple of buddies when they got back to land last week. I have the picture, but can't remember their names.
JNMnavymomOH - Wow! I am so happy for you that you got to see his ship head out, but my heart hurts for you because I know you'll miss your Sailor! Here's hoping he has GRAND adventures (and keeps in touch!)
JNMnavymomOH my son us on there also and we had the web cam on all day as well... actually had it streaming on the big TV and all my daughter's friends staying at our place from asheville "got to" watch. They just didn't get it! It does feel different knowing they are not coming back anytime soon.
B'sNuke - we lived in asheville for 21 years and our nuke was born there. It is beyond anything I could have imagined and will never be the same. We spent today making 600+ cookies that were requested for workers and displaced families who are getting MOE'S and water. It just hits different when you personally know many people who lost everything but luckily all our friends are physically OK. So many still missing though...
4kids & JNMnavy ... BNMHs to you and all the sailors on your ship. I have been watching it come and go from the best place around...the Island of the USS Midway Museum which is straight across the bay from the carrier docks. I was volunteering there all morning yesterday, expecting some movement; the Reagan was being pushed in as I left, then yours went soon after. I have seen ships moving many times but there is nothing like seeing the rails manned. My nuke does his best to avoid putting on his uniform, even when it means being the last to disembark. His ship is still in port nearby.
The stories of neighbors banding together to help each other and even help complete strangers is restoring my faith in humanity. There is so much work to do in these communities, the task just seems so daunting. I just can't even wrap my head around it.
Fair Winds and Following Seas to all those whose ships are moving....be safe!
Thank you to all of y'all for your prayers for the Helene families! I went on Thursday and Friday to my hometown (just north of Asheville) and it is heart-breaking and inspiring at the same time. I was there only 24 hours, and at least 3 strangers stopped by to ask if we needed water or food or cleaning supplies. My cousins dropped by and brought a 5-gallon container of water, and it was so encouraging to see so many people helping each other.
My sisters have been getting up every day at 5:00 to cook breakfast for the people working to repair the roads. It was so inspiring to me to see them giving to others in spite of needing to do a lot of work around the property. It really is an amazing joint effort at helping each other!
I’ve been in southwest VA since Wednesday for work doing damage assessments. It’s a mess and it’s going to take years to rebuild parts of the area. I can’t even imagine what it’s like in Asheville and other areas that got it worse than us. Mind blowing.
I saw a post (via email notification) from Seahawks12 asking for car transportation recommendations…. It’s gone now. If you still need it we had a very good experience with Sherpa. Well priced. Fast. Good service. Military discount.
Hi all, I have been reading but not posting much in this group! Thanks for all of the updates! It is good to hear what everyone is going through, no matter where you are at.
I'm going to be sending my son his car soon to GC. Thank you DsMom2020 for the car transport referral Sherpa. The title is in our name since we bought the car for him a while ago. Will he be able to bring it on base if the registration is not in his name?? Is this going to be a problem?
I believe he will need a letter from you giving permission for him to drive the car and keep it in base. He will also need to show proof of insurance and registration. Someone that has done this more recently will hopefully chime in!
Seahawks12 - My son was able to take his car to GC in Feb 2022. The car was in his name, so that was not an issue, but the insurance is in our name, and he is covered by our policy. We had to get a special letter from GEICO saying that he is insured, even though he is listed on our policy.
I would expect that when he gets there, they will tell him what he needs from you. :-)
MomofJoseph - Thank you for the great information! His car is being shipped to him on Monday. It will be delivered and stored at a storage place in GC until he gets everything in order that he needs.
@Seahawks12 - I am working on this now for my son as well. I just went to visit him in GC this past weekend. Wanted to see for myself how much the car was really needed etc, plus a good excuse for me to visit. After talking with his Chief he got a lot more info I thought I would share... Delivery, most people have them delivered to big Nex as it's a big parking lot easy to load and unload from the truck/trailer. They can meet them there to take delivery vs trying to get that hauler on base, won't happen. Paperwork - needs copy of registration and insurance. Insurance must show his name as a listed driver if policy is in your name. I am in insurance business, should be easy to call your agent and have them add his name to cards along with yours. Title does not need to be in his name so long as he's on insurance with you.
Plenty of secure parking on base, no permit needed, meaning they want to confirm documents but they don't have to pay for a pass or anything. And son says there's lots of parking available so probably no need for storage.
Hopefully some of this helps? They are picking up our car this week to head that direction!
lognavymom - Oh you are a breath of fresh air! Thank you so much for all of this information! My son has his own car insurance policy in his name through Allstate for the vehicle. We bought the vehicle for him a while ago and it is paid for but we never put it in his name. The vehicle registration is in my name, not his. Do you know if the registration needs to be in his name? I'm so glad you went to visit GC! My son's car is being picked up on Monday heading for GC. The transport company said it will be delivered by Nov. 1 to a storage unit near GC because we did not know the best place for delivery since he is in class everyday. The storage place will accept the delivery. So exhausted now but so happy I got your message today! Take care and talk soon!
All - Cars at GC - great info, but I want to share a potential issue that you may want to adjust prior to your sailors graduating. Like most of you my sailor's car was in name, the insurance was all set and the registration. He had no issues with GC.
However, when he got assigned to his next duty station, the Navy would not transport the car because it wasn't in his name. I sent the title, a note and I ended up flying down there in person. No go. He wasn't going to a state that he could drive to, that may be ok if your sailor drives his own car, but he must get approval for that, he was going to HI. We did contact a private transport company, but that was over 3k.
He ended up driving the car back home between him graduating and going to his duty station. Where I live there was no Navy transport station, so even if he got the title in his name, I would have had to drive to NJ (far) to have it transported. Everything did work out - I sold the car, and he bought a new one at the current duty station.
Please keep this in mind if your sailor is not staying on CONUS.
