Mineman Moms

My son arrived at RTC on 11/15/11.  His current contract has him as a Mineman and I am looking to see if there are any other Mineman Moms out there that have sons/daughters who are going in or have just arrived!  Mineman is such a small community that it is hard to gather information about the rate, and would like to hear stories or talk about what our children are doing!

My son is graduating on 12/6/2013, any other MN moms have kids around that time.  Son told me he just met someone with the same rating but didn't say his name.

  • alice

Hi Everyone, I just joined the MN moms site and I don't know if this is the same site or different. (sorry newbie here LOL) My son is currently at GL for BC and his PIR is 1/10/14. His recruiter told him he would be leaving straight from PIR and going to Texas for A school, but from what I see that isn't so. It looks like the A school for MN now is in SD and that first they stay in GL for a few weeks for IT training then go to SD. Is this true? I only have my hotel booked until Saturday because I thought he was flying out to Texas. If he's staying in GL then I can spend the whole weekend with him and I'll have to get the hotel for another 2 nights. If anyone can help, It would be deeply appreciated :)

Hello everyone. I am new MN Mom. My son gives me little details about what training he is doing and only shares the fun stuff. Glad to hear him a good spirits. It appears that he has completed his training and deploys in January. I am feel so lost and don't know what to expect.

  • alice

Hi MADre, I'm also new here. I know how lost I feel and my sons only in BC. That's why I'm so glad for sites like this so we can go through these things together. Does your son know where he will be going yet?

  • MADre

Hi Alice, not sure what BC means. My son will be stationed in Bahrain for 18 months. I know he is excited and looking forward but I can't seem to share the same excitement with my worries and concerns. I got use to the long distance except this time it is too far away from home.

  • alice

MADre, sorry BC is boot camp. Hopefully you will be able to communicate with your son while he's in Bahrain, either through computer or phone. I don't know how that part works. After the 18 months will he be going back to San Diego?

  • MADre

Hi alice. My son mentioned 18 moths in Bahrain but not sure if he will be returning to Sand Diego. He sounds very excited to travel but as all moms we worry no matter how close or far they are. Enjoy your visit with yours after BC- Boot Camp!!

  • MADre

Any Mineman mommy's in Houston, TX?

  • GloriaC

    Alice-

Mineman A school hasn't been in Tx for 2-3 years. My son had PIR on nov 2, 2012. Then he moved over to th main base at GL and stayed there until early Feb for ATT (advanced technical training). After that, he went to San Diego for A school, C school and additional training. He just left for Bahrain. There is a lot of training before the are actually sent anywhere. Hope this is helpful!  PS My son's recruiter gave him all sorts of wrong info. You aren't alone there!

  • MADre

Has anyone decided to make your own ribbons (blue/yellow)? My son is visiting for the holidays and I am confused on which color to use. I was almost certain YELLOW but isn't it for DEPLOYMENT?

  • Esther1995

I'm new to this website and so far I love it! My son joined as a mineman and is currently in BC, graduation date of Jan.24 2014. Miss him but I'm very proud!

  • MADre

Welcome Esther1995- I too am new to the site and have found good support here.

  • alice

GloriaC- Thank you for all the information. I didn't even know that they went to C school or additional training. That makes me a happy mom, means he will be in the states longer. And more time for me to visit with him :) I think these recruiters need to take a class every now and then to keep up with new information. If it wasn't for you  guys I'd have no idea what's going on. Thank You

Only 7 more days until I get to see him for Xmas! I feel so blessed we were picked to do the adopt a sailor program. Just praying for good weather, his dad and I are driving from NJ.

  • MADre

I am still wondering why he decided on a minesweeper? His first mentioned EOD I thought Hurt Locker. I am concerned about his decisions and as his deployment date gets closer I am getting more nervous.

  • GloriaC

Hi, Esther! Welcome! The time in BC will go faster than you think. I understand your feeling proud of your son. When I dropped him off for BC, I hugged him and told him to remember, every day, that I love him and I'm proud of him.

  • Esther1995

Thanks for the schooling info GloriaC,,nobody seems to know much about the minemen career, that we have asked. I'm so thankful for this website

  • alice

Hi Everyone, hope all is well. I have a few questions, after they graduate and go to their A school, do they also need civilian clothes to wear like on the weekends? Also is it just a room with a bed that their in or is it like a dorm room at college with a television, mini fridge, desk etc.

  • MADre

Hi Alice - Yes they will need a few pieces to lounge around or hang out with friends when they go out to tour the city. Room size may vary depend on the number of room-mates. A care package with goodies like snacks and essentials will help too.

  • MADre

My sailor has been home since Christmas and he is spending a lot of time sleeping and playing xbox. He said while in San Diego he is either underway or in his room playing or sleeping. This is not like him and I am concerned.

  • alice

MADre- Thank you for the info. I'm sure everything is going to be good with your son, Does he have a close friend that maybe could come over and just hang with him and play xbox and talk? sometimes it's easier to let their friends know if anything is on their mind instead of us. Prob just enjoying being able to relax and sleep and not having to be on a schedule.

Have a Great New Years Eve everyone and wishing all of you a Very Happy and Healthy 2014!!!

  • alice

Hi Everyone, hope all is well. Just praying for good weather for PIR next Friday, right now we're snowed in and Governor has declared a state of emergency.:(

Does anyone know if the Navy requires a specific kind of watch for them to wear. I was thinking about getting one for his graduation but don't want to get the wrong kind.

  • HoustonTXMom

Any Crew Bulwark moms out there?
  • alice

MADre- is this your sons first deployment? He will do great! Will keep him and all his fellow brothers and sisters in my prayers.
  • MADre

Happy to report my Sailor is doing really well. He settled in really quick and met up with his crew. He is visiting the city and exploring the culture. I am glad to hear him in good spirit.

I honestly believe we as moms don't give our self enough credit when our children tell us "Mom, I got this!!"

  • junebug14

Hi! My son's PIR was 3/14/14 and he recently started class in GL. What is the normal time being there? I also understand that he will then go to Cali and then he will find out where he will be stationed. Are there only a few places they can be stationed?

    Thanks for all help!!!

  • lupner88

My son graduated ATT school in Great Lakes yesterday 3rd in his class.  He is very excited about his next part of his journey in San Diego.  He will be on hold for awhile but anxious just to be in a new place!  Anyone out there have one going to mineman class in San Diego in about a month?

  • Minemom

My son has been in Japan for 3 weeks now and absolutely loves it. He's contracted there for 3 years. He's happy with his ship and crew and says he loves not just being a "number in the Navy"....says being a part of a small crew makes him feel like he's making a difference somehow. Love hearing that.
  • lupner88

That's awesome Minemom!  My son is so anxious to finally be a part of the Big Picture!  Had orientation today for school in San Diego.... he already loves it there!

  • junebug14

My son is in San Diego right now. He has been there since 5/14/14. Just started his classes yesterday!!!! So excited!

  • Minemom

My son loved San Diego. Enjoyed the schools and was happy he got to fish everyday lol.
  • Minemom

Let your boys know that everything gets better after school is over. Guam, Japan, Charleston and Bahrain tend to be the contract choices after school. Bahrain tends to be the last choice...for obvious reasons lol
  • junebug14

Where is the C school or is the Guam Bahrain Japan and Charleston the choices for that?

  • Minemom

Both A and C schools are in San Diego
  • Minemom

The choices for his deployment will come halfway through A school.
  • junebug14

That's good to know!! And that is 13 weeks? How long is C school?

  • Minemom

I told my son to work hard in A school so he would have more of a say in where he would be stationed. I didn't want him in Bahrain.
  • Minemom

    C school is short...3 weeks
  • junebug14

Thank goodness! I am so ready to see my sailor!!!

  • Michelle0120

Hello. My son will be going to A school for mineman training. Does anybody know what bases he would be able to choose from, depending of course how he does in school, after he finishes school? Are they all out of the country ? Is there ever a choice for San Diego ?
  • shelly

Hi Michelle 0120 minemen only mainly go to three places Bahrain, Japan or San Diego. My son chose Bahrain but chances are probably good that yours could get San Diego. Where is your son now? Mineman school is not in Ingleside if that's what they told you, he will go to San Diego for training.
  • Michelle0120

Hi Shelly . Thanks for the info. He heads to basic in August , so still always away, but time goes quickly. :) how is your son liking Bahrain? Is the A school training in San Diego really only 13 weeks after ATT in GL?
  • shelly

Well Michelle. The thing about the Navy is that they have to wait for classes to "fill up" before they start. So this means lots of hold time. My son was pretty lucky. He only had to wait a week for Att to start and then went to San Diego. When he got there he had to do other schools first before his mineman class. Then he had c school too so it took from dec 2013 bootcamp til dec 2014 to leave for Bahrain. He took leave to come home to NY en route to overseas in late November.

Are you from the San Diego area?

My husband is no longer in the service but when he was he was also a mineman. Right after boot camp he stayed in great lakes for ATT school and then once that was completed he went to San Diego for A school.

    Hopefully this helps
  • Michelle0120

Can anyone tell me If there is Liberty allowed for Christmas if my son is still in A school in San Diego at the time?
  • Mcway74

Hello! I've been reading all the comments and I see that someone said school is not in tx? But in Cali? What's up with the false information?

  • KarenW56

Are there any current Mineman Mom's out there ?
  • bmcd

My son just finished school in Great Lakes and is waiting to leave for San Diego in January for school there.  He is training for Mineman

  • KarenW56

Hi..my Son is in Great Lakes right now ! He started school last week. He was un-designated and chose Mineman rate.
  • KarenW56

I think the school in Great Lakes is around 9 weeks then on the San Diego ? What made your Son choose this rate ?
  • bmcd

the school in Great Lakes was 9 weeks, then San Diego is 19 weeks.  The rate he wanted was not available so he chose Mineman, so far he likes it but said the 3rd week of school was the hardest.
