    Did everyone go on vacation?
  • navymom3

Angie they must have as not much said in the last few days.

  • sunshine73

hey everyone! I went to see my sailor this weekend. Corry really is small compared to NAS. NAS was beautiful. Corry was just a bunch of buildings. I was surprised at the difference.
  • navymom3

sunshine I saw your pics they were great. We are going next weekend. Was going this weekend but it is his duty weekend. Going to try some of the places you suggested.
  • sunshine73

I can't wait to go back. We are shooting for Memorial Weekend. navymom3~ enjoy your trip. I can't wait to hear about it. If I can't go, I am happy to hear everyone else's stories. :)
  • navymom3

sunshine- we thought about going then but again it is my sons duty weekend. Plus have to go to a Army BC grad may 18th also. My son's BF is graduating army BC and her mom can't make it from Hawaii. And we are only 300 miles away. She was going to do the navy but i dont think her score was high enough. but she is tough and doing it all.
  • Craig

Here is a picture of Corry in 1958 with 100 aircraft on the field...

and here is what it looks like in 2004...

  • mumziepooh

Ok - son is frustrated.  He is phase 1 - still.......man it takes a long time to phase up at Corry.  He had his direct deposit put in his account at home instead of Navy Federal.  He had a couple hundred in there but needs to make a deposit and cash a check and can't go off base to do it - any ideas?  He really needs his pay to go to Navy Fed but that won't help for this weekend!
  • Craig

Just have him write a check for cash at the NEX cashier cage.  I think they are allowed to cash $250 per day, or maybe $300 per day.....
  • glassdog

He can also use his debit or credit card to get cash at the NEX.  That is what my son did, however he didn't know that to begin with.  In phase 2 he hasn't been able to get to the Navy Federal as they have to go in pairs in that phase still and hasn't been able to talk anyone into it.  Phase 3 he can go by himself and get an account open.

He said the phasing up had to do with how soon you could get the chit signed off on.  His was signed quickly but almost everyone else in his group took another 2 weeks as they were having trouble getting the right person to sign off on it. ???

  • Deborah (CTT son)

Remember this group talked about the fact ath DEPPERs could take the ATT class online prior to bootcamp?  Well, my son talked to his recruiter and even brought the article to him that I printed out for him and his recruiter told him that they can't do that anymore.  Do you think that the recruiter is just lazy and doesn't want to check into it?  I told my son that he would sign up online but we don't have a sponsor name in order to do it.  Any suggestions?
  • Craig

deboraho - I run a Navy deppers website and one of my members who is a recruiter recently posted this:

"i do help my deppers set up and get started on nko when it works a lot of the time nko will not let them set up a account to use because meps never set up their access so it make it hard.  That is why most recruiters don't know anything about it "

I bet your son can get into NKO... What he needs to do is read this:

Please read this from the tutorial, I should have posted this in my orginal post, and I will correct that, but in this link: https://wwwa.nko.navy.mil/a2images/d...n_Tutorial.pdf
on page 13 you will read this:

I know alot of your sailors are going up for advancement soon.  I'm constantly asked when will sailors be eligible for advancement.  Soooo, I wrote this info sheet that will let you know when the time come when they are eligible.

This sheet is for normal sailor.  By normal sailor I mean ones that didn't get an early promote on their evaluation.

Hope you guys will understand it....    (let me know if you think you see a typo)

  • Craig

clockard - SIPG is Service in Paygrade (SIPG).  We Navy guys have all type of acronyms.  We live by them...  TIR, PQS, ESWS, FOAD, STFU... The list just goes on and on....

For a really good explaination for the Navy advancement system, check out this Power Point....

    Navy_advancement_brief.pps

  • Craig

I better change that file to a PDF since some of you guys don't have Power Point...

    Hi Everyone,

The way things are done has changed in the last 3 years so I need a little procedure update.  Do the new sailors leave for Corry Station immediately after PIR or do they leave sometime on the weekend?

    Thanks

  • navymom3

CTmomof3- They start leaving on saturday until they are all gone. I have heard of them leaving as late as tuesday. Your sailor will know when he/she is leaving.
  • CTmomof3

Thanks, I'm looking ahead right now. When my son graduated 3yrs ago he went directly to the airport. We saw him 2 hrs while he waited for his flight. Then it took 5 weeks for him to class up...Navy way hurry up and wait.. So this time around I'm tentatively getting my ducks in a row.  If I count right and nothing goes wrong my son will PIR right before a holiday.  How far in advance before PIR do they know when they leave?
  • navymom3

CTmomof 3- You can see the PIR dates by division on the web site for boot camp. That way you know for sure. I read somewhere that the week of memorial day they will grad on thursday. I think they find out when they leave after they have passed there pt test and battle stations. Which is only a couple days before PIR. Mine had an issue passing his pt and thought he would not grad on friday but passed it on wed and grad and friday. Then had to get his flight after grad.
  • mumziepooh

CTmom - my son left at 1pm on Saturday and began classes 2 weeks later - had a long set of indoc classes to attend that used up more than half the wait time.
  • himmiemom

Checking in.....My son hit Phase 3 this weekend and spent the day on a jet ski with a shimate.  First time on one and he is hooked!!!!!!

Passed his Networking 2 test and can't wait till that is over.  He is studying 6 days a week and has Saturdays for free time.  He goes to class and than stays after for 1-2 hours to study.  Study groups are distracting to him becasue they get off the subject quite often.  He said the classes are very hard and that this is nothing like high school.  He was a straight A student in high school and didn't need to study for tests.  Everything came natrually to him.  He learned real fast that this isn't the case in the Navy.  Shock adjustment on his end.  Not used to studying but all in all he is enjoying this as well as being in the Navy.

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Just heard a rumor it was a Navy Seals team that took out bin laden...Craig? God bless our military!
  • cinder

    Hooyah for our Navy Seals

  • Craig

rorys - From my own personal view,  everyone thinks by taking Bin Laden out is a good thing.  It's not.  It will actually hurt the active duty sailors because now the American people will all gather and say, "You got him, now get out of the middle east".

What this means is our sailors will be downsized even more.  You guys see NAVADMIN 142/11?  It allows sailors to leave the Navy up to two years early now.  You think our economy sucks now, wait until you have 100,000 sailors being let go from overmanning.  The PRT will get even more tougher as they find ways to get people out... These sailors will have a hard time finding decent jobs.

    http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/messages/Documents/...

Again, this is only my personal view.... I truly hate seeing this day come...

btw:  On a side note, this proves that Bin Laden would never be a good boxer.  He couldn't take a shot to the head.... ~ha

  • Craig

clockard - I think that since we have his body then he cannot be a martyr.  It's actually scary what will happen...

But who will take his place?   When North Korea lost Kim Il-sung in 1994, and was taken over by Kim Jong-Il, it actually got worse for the world.  He's a much more wacked out guy.  So, yes, I think they can have a worse guy but it will take some time...

Come on everyone, weigh your thoughts... What do you think will happen?

  • Craig

  • Leslie1200

Nicely said Lady. I hope that the Navy will use my son's intelligence to prevent, not perpetuate, war.
  • glassdog

I think this is a good and bad deal.  Good that he is one less money man killer out there but bad as I am afraid this will cause more suicide bombings.  People may realize that yes we got him but now we need more of our military to help protect us.  It is a double edged sword.  Guess only time will tell.
  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

Hmmmm...I think, unfortunately, for retaliation, we will see an increase in "smaller" attacks. Not sure if we will ever see one as big as 9/11 again...I pray to God we don't!
  • glassdog

Can anyone tell me the cheapest way for my son to fly home for Memorial Day weekend?  I check one sight that was supposed to be a good site for cheap airfares and it was over 900.00!

    Help!

  • navymom3

sometimes you can get a better deal on the airlines website. Also I go to Kayak and they give me updates everyday if the price changes. Also if you have a bigger airport nearby it might be cheaper for a different or bigger one.

  • Craig

Emma - I totally agree...God help us if there is peace and reduction of our military.  Most people don't remember the past.  This same thing happened after WW1.  The American people wanted our military severly cut back.  Our military went home to nothing, no jobs, no income.  This added to the cause for the great depression.  It caused us not to be ready for WW2 which we were completely caught off guard.

With no military, then all the government contractors are not needed.  Without the military and contractors, then all the stores that serve the military will shut down.  Look at the facts concerning WW1:

    • The depression aided for the reduction of the military after WW1.
    • People beleived that Europe was unworthy of our support.
    • Pacfism - people who hated and abhorred war.
    • People beleived that WW1 had been a tragic mistake for the U.S.
    • Our military wasn't ready for WW2, and we weren't prepared to defend ourselves.

It all adds up.  This is what will happen to our country.    As much as I wished there was peace on this earth, I know there won't be.  Thoughout history war as always play a part in everyone soceity.   Our our country was build on war.  We have fought in every battle of every war.  It kind of reminds me of this:

  • Craig

glassdog - Try Orbitz.com if someone books a flight with them that is lower in cost, then they will automatically refund the difference in money.  Also try Expedia.com

  • rorysmom(Ship13Div244)

glassdog...I'm going thru the same thing.  Hubby and I want to fly from So. Cal to P'Cola in July & it will be almost $1,000 for the 4 days.  I have heard that the cheapest fares are on Tuesdays or Wednesday nite!
  • cinder

With all of the unrest in the middle east they better not be thinking about cutting back our military.  Craig you are so right about what happened after WW1 and I think that Obama is smart enough to realize this.
  • idahojeep

My sons got verbal orders and it looks like they are both going to Yokosuka Japan. Each on a different ship. Good thing is they may get to be at home for 30 days before they go.

Is that because they will be gone for 3 years overseas? They sounded pretty stoked about it.
  • glassdog

Think I will look some more tonight.

Has anyone ever had problems with Orbitz?  Don't you have to buy the ticket regardless?

By the way if any of you are in Colorado the packing party for the sailors and for marines in a hospital in Afghanistan is going to occur on May 7!  If you want to go info can be found on the Colorado mom's group.

  • Craig

A Navy seal walks into a bar and says...bartender give me a bin-laden, the bartender says "whats that?".... two shots and a splash of water!.....hahahahahahhaahaaaa

    how flippen funny is that!!!!!.....

glassdog - Your thinking of Hotwire, which is like Priceline, where you give them your credit card 1st.  With Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, and others, you choose your flight and see the amount before you purchase it....  Make sure you look at flying from Fort Walton Beach (VPS)  also... Maybe even Mobile (MOB)...

  • glassdog

Craig thanks for the tee-hee and the flight info!

  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

When my son was in kindergarten, the school sent this poem home in their May monthly newsletter.   Ive kept it pinned to my bulletin board at work ever since.   My son is now 21 and in the US NAVY.  I was scanning it to send it to my niece who is celebrating her first Mother’s Day and thought I needed to make a little revision to it.   You’ll see my revision at the end.  Happy Mother’s Day everyone

    For All Mothers

This is for all the mothers who froze their buns off on metal bleachers at soccer games instead of watching from cars, so that when their kids asked, "Did you see my goal?" They could say, "Of course, I wouldn't have missed it for the world," and mean it.

This is for all the mothers who have sat up all night with sick children in their arms, wiping up barf laced with Oscar Meyer wieners and cherry Kool-Aid saying, "It's OK honey, Mommy's here."

This is for all the mothers who have sat in rocking chairs for hours on end soothing crying babies who can't be comforted.

This is for all the mothers of Kosovo who fled in the night and can't find their children.

This is for the mothers who gave birth to babies they'll never see and for the mothers who took those babies and gave them homes.

For all the mothers who run carpools and make cookies and sew Halloween costumes  and for all the mothers who don't.

What makes a good mother anyway?  Is it patience? Compassion? Broad hips?

The ability to nurse a baby, cook dinner, and sew a button on a shirt, all at the same time?

    Or is it heart?

    I think so.

Is it the ache you feel when you watch your son or daughter disappear down the street, walking to school alone for the very first time?

The jolt that takes you from sleeping to dread, from bed to crib at 2 a.m. to put your hand on the back of a sleeping baby?

The panic, years later, that comes again at 2 A.M. when you just want to hear their key in the door and know they are safe again in your home?

Or the need to flee from wherever you are and hug your child when you hear news of a fire, a car accident, a child dying?

    I think so.

The emotions of motherhood are universal and so our thoughts are for young mothers stumbling through diaper changes and sleep deprivation...
And mature mothers learning to let go.

So this is for all the mothers  who sat down with their children and explained all about making babies. And for all the mothers who wanted to but just couldn't.

This is for reading "Goodnight, Moon" twice a night for a year.  And then reading it again, "Just one more time".

This is for all the mothers who mess up. Who yell at their kids in grocery store and swat them in despair and stomp their feet like a tired two year old  who wants ice cream before dinner.

This is for all the mothers who taught their children to tie their shoelaces before they started to school and for all the mothers who opted for Velcro instead.

For all the mothers who bite their lips (sometimes until they bleed) when their 14 year olds dyed their hair green.

This is for all the mothers who lock themselves in the bathroom when babies keep crying and won't stop.

This is for all mothers who show at work with spit-up in their hair and milkstains on their blouses and diapers in their purse.

This is for mothers who teach their sons to cook and their daughters to sink a jump shot.

This is for all mothers whose heads turn automatically when a little voice calls "Mom?" in a crowd, even though they know their own offspring are at home or are grown.

This is for mothers who put pinwheels and teddy bears on their children's graves.

This is for all the mothers whose children have gone astray and who can't find words to reach them.

This is for all the mothers who sent their child to school with a stomach ache, assuring that they would be just FINE once they got there, only to get a call from the school nurse an hour later asking them to please pick them up right away.

For working moms and stay-at-home moms.  Single mothers and married mothers.

Mothers with money and mothers without.

This is for all the mothers who taught their children to be peaceful, and now pray they come home safely from a war.

Tell them every day that we love them. And pray.

This is for you, so hang in there. The world would be a terrible place without the love of mothers everywhere.  You make it a more civil, caring and safe place for the precious children in our world.

"Home is what catches you when you fall - and we all fall."

    Author Unknown

As I read this, I knew I needed to add this paragraph below for us!

This is for all the mothers who first heard the words “Mom I want to join the military” and didn’t lock their child in their bedroom for the next 40 years.   Who lite those candles when their child was going through their final test of bootcamp.  For those Moms who kept their phone glued to their side, even when in the bathroom so that they won’t miss THAT call.   For all those Moms who gave up a weekend with friends to create that care package not only for her child but for all his buddies who aren’t getting any care packages.  For all those Moms who celebrated too many birthdays, Mother’s Days, Easter, 4th of July, Christmas without their children, praying that their sons and daughter were safe, and warm and hopefully had a nice meal.  This is for all the NAVY, ARMY, AIR FORCE, MARINE and COAST GUARD Moms.

  • mumziepooh

Still love it - we are in the same groups!  LOL!  That is so true!
  • glassdog

    Angie, thanks.
  • NavyMom4J

I just joined this group- my son PIR 4/29/11  is CTT- on hold for classes to begin. Loved the poem below!!!!  Does anyone know how long it takes to class up?
  • Angie (Dan's Mom)

NavyMom   my son is CTR and his wait til was only about 2 weeks   However CTT is different so I can't tell you   Glad you liked the poem   Happy Mother's Day
  • Craig

    Welcome aboard NavyMom...

We love having new families join us.  Is your son a 4 year CTT or a 6 year CTT?  If you not sure, then what base is he currently on?  Corry or NAS?

Again, glad to have you with us.

  • NavyMom4J

I know he signed up for 4 years with 2 in reserve- but he wants to make the Navy his career and go as far as he can ...He is at Corry I believe..I am new to all of this so what is the difference between NAS and Corry? He gave me his address but he did not say ...but I looked it up and I do think it is on Corry Station.
  • NavyMom4J

It is Corry Station-  Thanks for the welcome!
  • Craig

Yep, he's at Corry.  The 4 year CTT go to Corry, and the 6 years go to NAS.  My nephew is at Corry now.
  • NavyMom4J

Craig- What is the difference between the 4 year and the 6 year?
  • Pat

What great news, Lady. Tell her congrats. My daughter is a CTR and loves it. She has been in almost seven years.
