PM'd you to answer your question, Lou!

We never made it to the Navy Pier and I heard that was a good place to go. Also the Zoo seemed to be a favorite place to be at. We ate at Gino's East pizza. It's more of a tourist spot. If your willing to waste 2 hours on a meal then I would do it because we were able to talk and enjoy the pizza. Sorry my post was all over the place but I am writing as I'm thinking. I would try to make the meet and greet - even if it's for only 1/2 hour.

Hi Lou. The best advice I can give you is to plan you days there in advance. The mistake we made was waiting until we where there to decide what to do. My nephew told us he didn't care what we did he just wanted to be off base and with us. So start looking at stuff to do. The divisions have different times that they can leave and return to base but if you go with a time frame of 8 AM til 7 PM you should be ok and then you can always adjust accordingly. We did not stay at the Ramada Inn but at Holiday Inn on Lakehurst Drive. Our hotel was in a nice part of town compared to the Ramada and only 10 minutes from the base. The front desk personnal is the best person to ask for advice on where to eat and go within the area. You'll find that most venues will not charge your son for admittance but you won't know that until your about to pay to go in. After PIR we ate at a restuarant called Steves in a small town outside of Great Lakes. Suprisingly very affordable and had great steaks. It was quiet and out of the way but well worth it. Gurnee Mall is worth going to if you only have 1/2 a day to spend with him. We rented a car and it is important to have your GPS with you. It made things so much easier. But along with the GPS take a map of the area. The GPS is great getting you were you need to be but it won't tell you if your North or South of GL This will help to keep you bearings straight. We did not take the trains, because that type of transportation is completly foreign to us. So we didn't even know where to start with the trains. The day of PIR the NEX will be packed with people. You can always shop there after you drop him off for the evening. You don't need a military id to purchase items. Also, at PIR they will be selling drinks, coffee, snacks and the sailor white hats. This helps pass the time until it starts. We did go into Chicago and walked Michigan St. It cost $30 to park and then we walked up and down for a couple of miles.

Lou, that is SO WONDERFUL. I know you all breathed a sigh of relief. What week is he on now? Is he in the 3rd week? I think you had said that before. That is when my son rejoined a division, and he did great after that. So here's to new beginnings for John and healed stress fractures/bursitis! Now go out and celebrate! I will continue to keep him in my prayers...

Lou: I will keep John in my prayers because it sounds like this week is crucial for him.
Please post when you hear something. PRAYING!

Thanks so much for all of this info, Lou. Wow...I feel totally informed now. Some on my family live in NC so maybe T will get to visit some of them when based there. Your son, growing up there near the base and seeing "Navy" all of his life, must have been so excited to finally be old enough to join! That is so great...I know he will be back in the flow soon. Do they know what caused his stress fractures? Was it the running?

Lou, forgot to answer your question. We live in Miami FL....my family since the early 1900's so almost pioneers!

Thanks so much, Lou, for all of the info! Yes, I got both, but that's fine...the more info, the better! Even if repeated...maybe it will stick with me more! HA! I sure hope that your son is ok with the graduation this week too. But you know what? Once he is back in, he will just take off from there. I think if they thought he wasn't going to heal, they would have released him by now from the Navy??? My son was delayed a week when on 3-2. So he rejoined in the 3rd week also with his new division. His second division was better for him than the first...no nonsense, got him focused and he did much better. So you just never know! Please keep me posted on your son's progress, ok? Thanks again, Lou, for all of the info. Sounds like it is a neat place that a 24 yr old will really love!
Do you see navy personnel around all of the time? Is Norfolk a really large base? Just wondering....

Lou: I have a feeling that the new division your son will be joining once recuperated will be just as great as his first one. What week did he leave his 1st division in? Whatever week he left (i.e., 3-1, 3-2, etc), he will start back up with a division who is at that same point. So if he left in the 3rd week, he will return in that divison's 3rd week...and have lots of time to bond. My son and the few others who went back into a new division felt a bit rejected at first, but they finally fit in and were fine. By the way, my son has been assigned the USS Theodore Roosevelt (dry docked) in Norfolk. He probably will be up there in May. What can you tell me about Norfolk? He will actually be in Newport News, I think, where the ship is. Thanks for any info you have!
