DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Make at least change 3 at the bottom of OPSEC and PERSEC (Making Changes to Your Profile) (clickable link) and change the Privacy Settings for this page from "Anyone" to "Members."

If your loved one is now in OCS, then you can change "Waiting to attend Officer Candidate School" above to "In Officer Candidate School."

There may be other changes you need to make as well, so read and consider each of the changes.

Congrats to your LO on the getting to OCS. Mine was commissioned 9/2015. If you have not hear another good faceboook page is officer training command Newport. Here they wil post pictures of the classes and you too can play finding Waldo looking for you LO. I was able to meet up with our LO in the evening the first night we arrived for a short hug on base. The Hi Moms event is a must go to. Mine did have his orders so after the commissioning program and getting his records he was free to leave the base. For his group they had to get out of their rooms as the next group was moving in.  If possible add a few days for exploring the area. We went as a family to Boston after for a few days It was a wonderful trip.  As the others have stated no news is good news the first few weeks.

Congrats to you LO entering OCS. You may want to hold off on the revelations. Your LO can roll anytime. Make sure you start sending letters. No goodies no perfume letters no nothing.  Right now your letters will be the only thing that will get your LO through this hard time.

MBmom:  I know; it's hard to let them go and be on their own.   We here all know that once a Mom, always a Mom, no matter how old they get!  For the first 3-4 weeks of OCS, the only contact with the outside world that the candidates are allowed is old-fashioned snail mail letters.  Their cell phones are taken from them and stored until about the tenth week. They are not allowed access to TV, internet, newspapers, etc.  Once they get email privileges about week 3-4, they will be emailing from a closed government server, and so will have no access to Facebook, or other social media.  About all they can do is email to home.  This is so they will be fully concentrated on their training, and to wean them off constant electronic communication.  It comes as a great shock to those who are addicted to gaming, etc.!

Your role for those first weeks is to write him lots of encouraging letters with all the news from home. Letters only, in plain white envelopes. I also photocopied cartoons, and added family pictures into computer-generated letters.  Do NOT send any treats, food, or gifts of any kind or the candidate will be punished with many extra pushups for contraband!  Make sure anyone to whom you give your loved one's address knows this, so they don't innocently get him in trouble. He will be able to call you one time when he reports, to let you know he got there, and he can tell you his mailing address then.

They cherish those letters, and live for mail-call, even if they tell you don't bother writing.  An encouraging letter telling him how proud you are, and that he must hang in there no matter how tough it gets, can make all the difference.

Sometimes they will write back, but don't expect it. (Kids today don't do snail mail!)  Write anyway.  You'll hear more once he gets email privileges.

Remember, in the first few weeks of OCS, NO news is GOOD news.  If you do not hear from your candidate, then they are still in the program.  If they get injured or fail something and thereby get "rolled" back to the next incoming class in three weeks to start over, they will be allowed to call family to tell them that.

Read back on the posts here on the OCS graduates group, and we may have answered many of your questions already. If not, just ask!  My son graduated OCS 5 years ago, and many things have changed, so I sometimes have to defer to the moms of more recent grads for info on how it is done now.

Good luck to your son!
