Cathyo - I'm very proud to be Katie's Mom.  I'm proud of all of my children.  Katie's call woke me this morning and we talked for about an hour.  She doesn't have to 'work' again until Tuesday, but she may have 'duty'.  If your son has leave towards the end of April, then he will be arriving in Sasebo some time in early/mid May I would think.  Katie had 2 weeks at home.  Since the ship is in port, his sponsor will have a better chance of meeting his plane in Fukuoka.  He'll also get a little time to acclimate himself with the ship and the base before they head out for their next deployment.  Good luck to your son as he goes thru the gas chamber and the final training for DC.

Cathy, you're welcome. yes,  He has been in the NAvy since '06  and he is somewhere  in  Japan, but  not  on a ship. he's a seabee. Well maybe this morning it was nice,  don't worry about exaggerating about how  nice it was.  I didn't go outside  until this afternoon. I had gotten a nw book yesterday, and I was sitting on my bed reading it. In fact i had read the whole thing by 1 pm. My  youngest son and hubby were  at a friend's house playing dungeons and dragons  and since my daughter is married and  has a family of her own, I had the house to myself. But that  will soon end as  soon they will finish playing their  D&D until they start  again in the fall . In which case, my sunday's won't be mine to do as as I please. MAybe  then we can do something as a family. Camping season will start soon as  will the drive ins. We end up going to Cochsackie by the prison , or to Broadalbin to see the drive ins... Also next month  Six Flags opens  up and its rollercoaster time. LAst weekend  we took a road trip to Vermont. on the way home, stopped at this craft place  just outside of Bennington. I have always wanted to stop there everytime we went by it. It was like an indoor craft fair, but without the people running their booths. It seems that people  have these  spots. or shelfs where they put their crafts. kinda like a consignment store. I think I will look into it and see if I can sell my crafts there too. or if I have to be  a residient of Vermont. IF  so , I am looking for one in NYS. When My mom was alive and doing crafts,  she used to do the  Essex county Fair in  Essex Vermont. I think they called it the Champlain Expoxition. I emember making the crafts then putting tags on them with a number assigned to me. Then  my mom would take them,  to  the fair, then pick them up after LAbor day. Then she lost her eyesight to Lymphoma in'05 and had to stop doing the crafts. But she stopped going to the fair after my dad died in '03 I took over doing the  craft fairs in '06

Cathy - I'm sure he is looking forward to getting on the ship.  TIme I'm sure will pass quickly and so will his time at home before he leaves.  Be sure to get a gate pass at the airport so you can be with him until his flight leaves.  This time when Katie returned to Japan, she and another sailor were the last to board.  Katie arrived in April 2009, so she will not leave until around April 2012.  Not sure that she will know what is next for her until early 2012.  Katie originally signed up for 5 years and is considering staying in, but time will tell. She has also looked into cross-training.  Katie has had a good experience so far in the Navy.  It was wonderful going on the Gator Cruise last summer, being able to be on her ship and live/eat/sleep and meet the sailors on board.

I see you posted your son has orders for June.  Kate came home for about 2 weeks before she was sent to Japan.  The Essex was out to sea when she arrived and she was assigned a sponsor as well.  Can't remember if she ever heard from them or not, but the sponsor was on the ship and not in port, so she was on her own from Fukuoka.  There were other sailors that arrived, so they got on the 'blue bus' and reported to base.  Kate was there only a few days before they sent her to the Philippines to meet the ship there.  Good luck with your son finishing up at DC school - who knows, he may end up in my daughter's shop.

Glad you got the link. I just started on FB since Katie said there was an official USS Essex page and there I have also linked to the 7th Fleet.

Hope your son continues to do well and glad he is looking foward to Japan.  Sasebo is a much smaller base than Yokosuka.

The above link will get you to the 7th fleet site.  There pictures, news, forces, etc.  If you click on Forces - you will see all the ships in the 7th fleet.  There is only 1 LHD- there  a LSD and 2 LPDs.  So he may be in Sasebo on the USS Essex if he said LHD.

Cathyo,

I had to get a new cell phone today because my old one was having major issues.  I was nervous that my son would call and I might miss it.  So I got this thing and went to work with it.  I was showing the phone to my co-workers when it started ringing and lo and behold...the number said Great Lakes!!  I panicked because I couldn't figure out how to answer the thing!  Lol!  Probably was mainly panicking because I saw where the call was coming from!  So yup!  It was my son!  Just calling for some reference info...but I got to talk with him for about 5 minutes.  He sounded very content and so far ...well adjusted.  He was happy to be out of the official sweat suit and dressed in camo instead. I asked him about the rolled up pants...lol...and he said he didn't know why they made them do it.  Not a very satisfying answer....but...well...I guess they just didn't bother to tell them why.  Probably not a big deal.  He said it was great to hear my voice...sniff sniff.  But the best part was that he sounded so ...easy...and content.  Really took a load a off my mind for sure.  He also said that they were all issued some writing material and stamps.

He said the form letter should arrive any day and that his PIR is 2/11.

So anyway...I thing things are going okay for our boys!

Cathyo,

My son left from Albany on the 7th.  We live in VT.  Have you gotten your form letter?  I assume you got the box?

Sorry I missed your post cathyo. Do you live in Albany?  Or did he just leave from MEPS there?  Do you know his ship/div yet?
