It was bittersweet to say the least.. I answered the phone and my baby was on the other end..."Hello Mama" My heart just sank... a huge knot swelled up in my throat and I could hardly speak. Still waiting for the famous form letter to come.. needless to say, I am not a very patient person. I find myself speeding home just to get to the mailbox to see if it is there.... like if it is it would go away somehow.. silly, I know.
I realize that I am not the first, only or last mother to be in these shoes....still, it doesn't make the waiting any better.

Subs is a hard life. But small community - more camaraderie.
I see your sailor is on his way to Nuke School. The Navy isn't going to allow him to switch to something in the medical field any time soon but he should still explore it anyway. You son should investigate into applying to the Naval Academy. If he has the brains to do nuke, he can become a surgeon - just a matter of opportunity. The Naval Academy reserves a number of slots every year for enlisted personnel.
