Last I talked to my son (things seem to change so quickly!) he said SUNY-Maritime College was a strong option for him. The other one is Iowa State, in Ames. Talk about 2 completely different settings! Either smack-dab in the middle of Iowa or in the Bronx. I think either one will be culture shock after growing up in Oregon, then living in Charleston for almost 2 years.

He's an ET, and as you may have read, just passed his boards. YAY! We (my son, his older sibling and I) are disappointed he won't be going to Oregon State. I was really looking forward to him being so close to home for 3 years. Oh well, this just means we get to explore a new part of the country.

Tell me a bit about your son. Is he an ET, MM or EM? Has he been in Charleston, Ballston Spa or out in the fleet? Does he have his college stuff all nailed down yet?

How about you? How do you feel about this Navy adventure? Tell me a bit about yourself.

PatM...i, I see you have changed your Username (probably some time ago) so that it no longer contains what appears to be your full name; you also need to change the URL to this page. Make change 2 at the bottom of OPSEC and PERSEC (Making Changes to Your Profile)  (clickable link) to take care of that. thank you for the info. My son is in the group that's stuck there indefinitely because of the equipment breakdown and his lease is up on the furnished apt they had and can't extend as the owner is returning for race season. moving into an unfurnished place and just needs a bed and a few things. I'll pass this on to him.

Hi - I didn't want to address the comments and name-calling on the main board and stir the pot more - but I applaud the way you handled it.  The comments directed at you were beyond the pale.  I wish I could say they surprised me, but they fit with the poster's history of dogmatic statements.

Hey NJ Mom - nice to meet someone from NJ. I asked my son how close you are and he said we are quite a distance.

My son was sworn in at FT. Hamilton  and is now in A  school to become a nuke.  I went to his graduation from BC and would like to pass on some info.  You will be allowed to meet your sailor at the airport to give them phones, lap tops, clothes - whatever.  What they didn't tell us was that our sailors can be given another bag full of their things.  My son took a full duffel bag of his possessions.  It made life a lot easier for him.  Had I known in advance that bag would have been packed full because a week later I was shipping a big box.
