My daughter went to meps today and because of a lower Asvab score she was toldthe only job that she qualified for was culinary. They told her to take it and they will find her something else before her ship out date in Feb 2015. Is that true? Could she possibly retake her asvab? Just feel like they forced her into a job she will hate.
Thanks for the information. I will have her to check with recruiter.
My son was talked into Hull Technician not based on his score but based on his recruiter's "suggestion." After realizing there was plumbing involved, he tried to change his job. The recruiter and the chief at the office told him if he did everything they asked of him, they would change his job. He did everything, even leveled up to E3...nope, they told him too bad too sad. Good luck to your daughter. Culinary may not be too bad, though. I hear the Navy has the best food so she will probably get some very good skills that could lead to a great career in the restaurant industry. She may be the next great chef!
In the end, nobody can force your daughter into something she doesn't want.
If your daughter signs her enlistment papers based on a promise (or a possibility) from the recruiter's office then she will be stuck with that choice when she finishes bootcamp. Tell her to be sure she would be content with that job if the recruiter's promise doesn't come through. They can tell her anything, but a recruiter does not have any control over what billets are available at the time she ships - that's a detailers job. So if they tell her to sign up for culinary and they will "TRY" to get her something else before - and she really doesn't want culinary, then she has to decide if she should sign now or hold out until she can get something she will like.
On a submarine, the cooks are the most popular sailors. You do not want to mess with the cooks (if you want to eat).
Hi, my experience is my daughter was contracted to be a UT, and put in a Dar Request, and was able to have her's changed to MA. Have her talk to her Chief at the recruiting station. It's rare, but it does happen! Good Luck!
