Dear SR (erins last name),
My name is Sharon and I have a favor to ask. On the 16th of May I sent my baby girl to bootcamp. Her name is Erin. I understand you are in the same division as her. Something tells me that you may know her. She is beautiful. She is bright. You wouldn't believe how smart she is. And she is funny. She is also very artistic. I wonder if she had a part in designing your division flag? And boy can she sing!
Oh, my favor.. can you give her a huge hug from me??!! Tell her that she is simply amazing! Tell her that when she looks in the mirror and can no longer see clearly that baby girl inside, but instead sees an emerging sailor, a more confident woman, a stronger willed human being, don't be afraid of the changes. She should celebrate them. Because this is what self-esteem looks like ! Tell her that every single difficult thing she survives at bootcamp is molding her into the woman she wants to be. Tell her that I don't want her to worry about me. But this is really hard for me. I miss her so much. You see, her and I, we got to live together for 2 months before she left. It was amazing. It was the first time in her adult life we really spent quality time together and we became best friends. I hope she knows how much I cherish that special time we got to have together. I am so proud of her and what she is accomplishing every day. Tell her that I am ok! And that NOBODY on this earth loves her more than I do. :)
And SR (erin's last name).. Erin has told me, in her letters, a few things about you. She says you ROCK in your uniform! And that you didn't stop jogging once during your first pt test! That is huge! Congrats! Next time you will be even faster. And the final PT..you will find strength down in depths you don't know you have and you will pass. As you are running (not jogging) you will remember every miserable moment and achievement that got you to the final test. Your division will be screaming you on! The first reward for passing.. BATTLE STATIONS! The second, and my personal favorite, reward.. you will get to see your Mom in a few days! By the time you put on your uniform for PIR the little girl inside Erin and the confident SAILOR in you will become one.
I can't wait to meet the 'new' you.
You are my sunshine.
Love,
Mom

Thanks Sherri. I have been really stressing bad the last few days. Writing this was very therapeutic for me. Don't have a cat or a dog to write her a letter from so I was trying to think of something fun like that.

Sharon that was beautifully written. I think it is such a bonus that you have been there so you really know the tests she is facing and you really know the strength you have given her all those formative years. Job well done MOM!

Love you,

Mom (Erin's grandma)

Thanks Mom! It has been over 29 years since I left the Washington State. You and I..we are the queens at the long distant mother-daughter relationship. No matter what my circumstance, good or bad, you ALWAYS are there for me. Whether it is the words you say, or just the sound of your voice, you always make me feel better. You have been the best role model. I often wondered how you KNEW just the right things to say.. I am learning quick that you didn't know, you didn't think, you just pulled it from your heart and it was always what I needed to hear. Thank you for 29 years of preparing me to be the long distant Mom. You are the best!

LYMTAT,

Sharon
