Does anyone know what is an underway vs. a deployment. My son is getting ready to go on an underway for a month and he is very nervous and is not excited at all. My heart breaks for him. We stay positive and excited for the adventure, but when I get off the phone, I begin to cry. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Jennifer - an underway is for a much shorter time - usually no more than a month.  It's a chance for the ship to get out to sea and do maneuvers and see how everything is working and it's usually in preparation for a deployment.  He shouldn't be nervous - it's a chance for him to actually do his job on the ship and get a feel for the ocean.  He'll definitely be busy but this will help the time to pass quickly!

Jeniffer - I hope B'sNukeMom's reply has helped as well as what we shared in the group.

She is right, they will be busy.

Thank you everyone. I have read all the comments and feel better about the adventure. I hope he does too. He still sounds nervous, but my husband and I will certainly continue our positive talks with him. I also contacted a mom in my Blue Star Moms group that is an ombudsman to see how to get in touch with the one for his ship. Thanks everyone!

Jeniffer, I sent you a private message. I am glad that you have a Blue Star Moms group in your area and are able to talk to someone locally. That is so helpful.

Chipmunk:

I replied to your other message, but do you  know if the moms on this thread get together in their local areas? I joined the Blue Star Group and love their contribution to our active duty and vets, but there is little time for collaboration to "talk" it is all about fundraising and more fundraising...do you know of other groups who meet and talk about what we all are going through

Jennifer - there is a PA Navy moms group on here.  It's not real active but maybe if you post you'll get it going again.  Here's the link:

Jeniffer,

I will be honest, I enjoyed getting to know those in my Blue Star Group, but it was very small, and then with Covid shut down and having to wear masks it was hard for me to connect. Many of them were from other branches of the military and service projects always seemed to conflict for me as well as the meeting day was in the same week as another monthly meeting that I had.

I was already very active on this site and after starting the Beyond BC group, I felt like I could offer my time and support here more than locally. My state group is also more active in FB and I do not participate in that one either. I would suggest that you check the link that B'sNukeMom gave you.
