My son left last Tuesday for bootcamp. When can I expect a call and information on how to write him? His birthday is Oct. 1. Should I send treats, or is this not a good idea? Thanks! Susa
No you cannot send treats to your son. The RDCs will probably enjoy them, but the recruits including your son might not like the push ups. LOL
Limit what you send to your recruit to letters, cards (no glitter, no music), and a few pictures. Anything else will draw attention to your son, and most recruits would like to stay under the radar. :)
Be sure to join the bootcamp moms group. You'll find lots of good info there.
You'll get the form letter soon. Don't try to write before you get it because the letter may never reach him. Don't send any food at all during BC. My son turned 21 during BC, so I know that feels rough. I did send him a silly card and letter that he was supposed to open on his birthday. If you send a special birthday letter or card, send it early and write something like "open on 10/1" on the back of the envelope. It takes a long time for mail to get to them, so I would go ahead and start writing letters now and hold them until you have the correct address.
I didn't get an unscripted call until he'd been there for about three weeks, and that timing is up to the RDCs of his division.
I know this period of having tons of questions and little power to get them answered is hard, but just think! He has an extra birthday, now! The day he arrived is his Navy birthday. (For them, it's just the day they get new uniforms, but it's special to me!)
