I am very concerned about what I am aloud to do as a GIRLFRIEND. Can I not get a military ID? If I can't how am I suppose to get on base to see him? Why can't I go on the Tiger Cruise? Can I still go to the pier to get him when the ship comes back from deployment? It seems ABSOLUTELY rediculous to me that I can not be there for him when i have been in this Navy thing from the start and am not going to be able to get to him. This is scareing me very much. Moms and girlfriends do not get military id cards or benefits - you also need to make plans to attend his homecoming as the base will not allow you to just drive on for the event. To be a visitor on any base, you generally need someone to sign you in. Often the ship's ombudsman will capture a list of those attending the homecoming as they can get approval to enter the base that day. Are you involved with the FRG for the ship or getting any communications from the ombudsman? If so this will give you all of the last minute details of that homecoming and they will be able to help you with the entry on to the base.

Girlfriends can't get military ID cards, that isn't just for base access, that's for access to healthcare and other benefits.

Tiger Cruises don't allow spouses or SOs, never have. There are no facilities for couples, so in the interest of safety and good conduct, cruises are limited to family members who won't want private or intimate time. It makes sense from the Navy's viewpoint, what's ridiculous to you is safety and national security for them.

Have him sign you up with the ombudsman so you can receive updates. You can be at the pier for homecoming, they make special arrangements for non-ID holders to visit that day. Now, breathe slowly! And don't plan on wearing a dress, just in case you get to go on board for a quick tour.

In the meantime, are you on the girlfriends group? They provide great support for each other:

This is so stressfull. I am suppose to be in California in 17 days to go visit. And I dont know the orders of operations to be able to see him. I thought he could get me a military ID and I could stay on base at the Navy Lodge. I had no idea we couldn't do this. He is currently in School for a half day every day over there. Should i get a hotel close off base and stay there? Would I never be aloud on base there? Has anyone gone to see their boyfriends? How does this work? Im feeling like my sailor hasn't researched my stay very well and neither have I!!!!!

You will have to stay off base unless he can get reservations at the Navy Lodge and escort you everywhere on base. You can't go on/around base by yourself. There are several bases in SD, two have Navy Lodges. But you can find reasonable rooms there, and public transportation is quite good and easy to use.

Your safety comes first. Maybe can you wait until he docks and from home make the arrangements to go out there.
