my daughter just went to boot camp when she went to meps she was offered a job right than. She went in Jan and left for boot camp in March. I miss her so much have not got to talk to her yet. I just got her box with all her things. That is sad.
He needs to talk to his recruiter my daughter was told that even if she took the job and if another comes up that she want she would take it. So tell him to speak with his recruiter. ok
Wait time has been months before they go in.
Hey Ann,
It really depends on how he scored on the asvap(spelling?) It is not like it used to be many years ago, you sign up and they take you . You have to qualify for a job. My son did good on the test and listed like 4 jobs he wanted . He waited for almost a yr to get the one that he really wanted. He ended up going to MEPS several times, and unexpectedly got a call from his recruiter one night at 6pm saying be at the office at 3 am we are driving to Nashville your job is open. He had a Jan ship date but asked for sooner so he got Oct. He is now in San Antonio .He completed BC on 12/17 got to come home for 1 week at Christmas then had to be in San Antonio by 12/27 didn't start his A school till like 1/3 and I think after that they had to wait another week to really begin. He finished A school in Feb and is now in K9 Training still in San Antonio and will graduate that May 13 then off to Pax River Maryland. Be prepared for the ride , you will be surprised how much he grows up ! Hope this helps if you have any other questions just ask. Stay on this site it will be your LIFELINE while he is away and DON'T MISS BOOT CAMP graduation if at all possible . Best wishes to you all and many Blessings your way!
Anita
He doesn't have to say yes to any job, at this point, he isn't in the Navy, just DEP.
The process can take months, as there are many qualified candidates all vying for the same jobs. This is the famous Navy "hurry up and wait".
Hi Ann,
My son is in the same position. It's frustrating when you don't know what's going on, I feel the same way. Meps will based his job placement on his asvab line scores and he gets 5-10 picks I was told. I spoke to a navy counselor and was told that my son should take what is offered to get his foot in the door since the Navy is so overmanned. He has to commit 2 years to that job and can change rate afterwards. My son is willing to take anything at this point and willing to tough it out if it turns out he doesn't like the job, but that's my son. He's done waiting around and wants to get his life going and I don't blame him. Well, goodluck to your son. Everything will work out. As everyone is saying here on N4M, "Patience is a virtue". Keep in touch!
Cristina
