My son leaves for BC on June 3rd, wow it is getting harder the closer it gets! Everyone says oh, you should just be proud, which I am, but I am so heartbroken right now, I can't feel anything else. His dad and step dad and aunts and uncles are like so happy for him and keep telling me I should be also, I feel like nobody understands, I am his mom. I feel so selfish and numb. I do not break down in front of him, but dreading the day he leaves.... Bootcamp and six years is what I cannot get my head/heart around. I don't want him to push me away because everyone is so supportive and I am so sad.

smh, yes, this sounds just like my son! He broke the news that he joined the Navy, he will be leaving Sept 3rd, after I didn't have a chance to absorb that, by the way mom, I am going to be a Navy Seal, I am going to try out.. of course he passed right away with high scores, got accepted to try out, changed leave date to June 3rd, my head is still spinning, If he makes it, I just keep thinking how he will have to live by the ocean for the next 6 years, (and I hate to fly) the danger and I will never know "where he is or what he is doing" His recruiter  has been aweome and understanding to me, I think he dreads when I call, but always answers!! I too feel like he will never come back "home". I am trying to "catch up" glad people on here undertstand and are going through the same thing:)

I do understand! So...he passed the Physical test and they moved his Boot Camp day from June 3rd to Sept. 3rd? What was he going to do before the SEAL thing? You will have to excuse me since I don't know any of the lingo yet!

Comment by jojo on May 20, 2013 at 4:48pm

No when he signed for the Navy Middle of December 2012, they had him leaving  Sept 3rd, after he passed the test to try out for SEAL, they bumped him up to boot camp for June 3rd, when he was going to do just Navy I think he signed up for airforce something or another.... sorry, I don't know the lingo yet either, when did/does your leave?

smh and jojo, What does ??? mean? (A Guide to Navy Abbreviations and Terminology) will help you with the new lingo. I should have it back up later today.

jojo, you may wish to join the group, DEP-Leavin for bootcamp in June. You will meet others with loved ones leaving that day/week who may be in the same TG and have PIR together. Be sure to check out the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for.... I also suggest you join Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) and New Members Stop Here and check out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) and Discussions there.

Your future Sailor may want to join http://www.navydep.com to learn the ins and outs from the DEP point of view. Craig runs that and will steer him to some good links on there.

Thanks lemonelephant- you are the best!

So...He is supposed to ship out on October 28th. He is contracted to do Oceanography. However, he scored well and they thought he would qualify for Special Ops so they delayed his ship date to Oct. 28th. His physical exam results came back and he pre-qualified for EOD and Combat Diver. So he took the test a few days later and passed everything but the curl ups. Today (two weeks later) he passed those easily and everything else was improved however, when he was doing his pushups he had some odd pain in his elbow and had to stop at 38 pushups...so he did not qualify. He seems fine with that and is positive that he will pass everything two weeks from today. He wants to be a SEAL and I would actually prefer that to EOD. However, he did not pass the vision test for SEALS...only the others. Apparently his recruiter has "challenged that" or something like that. If his vision  is deemed okay then he can put in for the "draft" for SEALS and , if not, then he can decide between Diver and EOD. Does that make any sense to you?? I think that I am getting this all right. Haha. So anyway, the kid is gung ho Navy and they are lucky to have him. He is brilliant and will do well at whatever he chooses, but this is not at all what we have ever thought about...discussed or even considered. So it is all still shocking to me. I will support him, of course, but will always worry. I have only known two people who went into the service and both died so I am not taking this well. I am the kind of mom who had a hard time with him getting his driver's license for heaven's sake!!

smh, Wow! what a journey he's had so far and that you will have with him from now on. Yes, what you wrote makes sense and agrees with other things I have seen for Special Ops. I have a little on Special Ops in 800 and 900 Divisions within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones)
