It's been awhile since I've logged on.  Much has happened since then, including the long illness and subsequent loss of my father in June.  My son went on to A-school, and then C-school for preventative medicine, both in San Antonio.  Now he's in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor, and a mother couldn't be more happy for her boy!

However, now I'm facing a Christmas utterly alone.  With dad gone, Dylan so far away, and no family to speak of nearby, the solitude really hit me today.  I've lost so much in the past couple years, and today is when it all came crashing in.  I'm just reaching out for some support during this challenging holiday season.

Also, if anyone has a sailor in Hawaii, could you tell me what non-perishable food items I should ship in a holiday care package?  My son says that Oreos are outrageous there, so I'm sending him a few packages of them, but are there any other suggestions?  Any assistance will be appreciated.

Also, reuseable shopping bags.  They outlawed the plastic ones recently.

Excellent advice, Anti M...thank you!  I've texted my boy the details, so he'll have them when he wakes up.  This 5-hour time difference is something I"m still getting used to!  I'll include some green shopping bags in his Christmas package.  Being a green girl, I have a TON of them!

I haven't been to Oahu since the 60s, so the base dad was on is probably much changed or long gone.  So much to do there, he should be out and about as much as he possibly can!

We do vacation in Hawaii ... my sailor husband had never been there, so we went to Big Island.  Love it so much we just kept going back.  In 2013 we will be going to Kauai, the Garden Isle.  Very exciting.  I can wear muumuus all the time and it is okay.  I make my own with fabric we buy there, otherwise I couldn't afford a nice one at all.

My son gets off duty early enough in the afternoon that he has plenty of time to explore...and he does!  He recently climbed up a waterfall and then jumped 30 feet into the water below.  I told him, "You know, you already have me really freaked out that you're in the Military...do you really have to jump off a 30-foot cliff...for fun?"  Of course, his reply was, "Yes I do.  And I'm going to go parachuting soon as well."  Unstoppable.  That's my boy!

While I miss him terribly, I'm so grateful that he has the opportunity to really experience life.  I know that he is doing the best thing for him, and his life, and the lives of others, is all the more enriched for it.

Soon as I can, I'm traveling there to see my boy and experience the place.  It will be good.

Carole--I am sorry for your loss of your dad. Hoping you have many happy memories  to carry you through the holidays. Not sure where you live, but maybe there are some volunteer opportunites in your community for Christmas. soup kitchens, nursing homes, etc  would welcome helpers/visitors during those holidays for the residents that don't have family visiting. Sometimes churches make a big meal for people that aren't going out of town and maybe you could help out. Just a thought--it would give you a place to be on Christmas!

Thank you, bsb...it truly means a lot.  Actually, my church is hosting a homeless sleep/warming shelter for one week beginning Dec. 30, and I've volunteered to serve for three nights there, including New Year's Eve.  It does my heart good to help others in need, especially during the winter months.  As it turns out, I may have the opportunity to visit my mom and sisters for a few days several states away.  Plans aren't solidified, but I'm feeling much more hopeful.

Again, thank you for your kindness.  It is so healing to know that I can reach out and others will respond <3

So sorry for your loss Carole.  Many hugs to you.  You are in my prayers and are not alone.
