With the calling card I sent with my son you would call a 1800 number and then the number you wanted to call. So It didnt have an electronic strip. I cant remember the name of it but got it at walmart.

Walmart sells the AT&T card where you just need to call the 1-800 number and then the number you are calling so you could just mail him the info from the card and not the actual card.  You can also get a "virtual" card online from AT&T which also only gives you the numbers you need and not an actual card.

I would write and tell him to buy a calling card with a LOT of minutes on it at the NEX on base. The pay phones eat up a ton of minutes (about 35-40) just connecting to the number dialed. What a racket!

Also, when you write him put a small list of phone numbers/people inside. ecause they are so used to having everyone's numbers on speed dial, they won't remember a lot of numbers.

I agree with ebigirl. Tell him to buy one at the NEX.

Last summer when Ben was in bootcamp, I just sent one in a card. He activated it and it was fine. I didn't write anything on the envelope. He can also purchase one at the NEX. I know Ben bought one at the NEX and then I sent him one with 500 minutes on it. They only have a few minutes on that first call. Ben was homesick & crying & all I did was try to calm down. Try not to cry with them it only makes them more homesick and they question their decision of if they should be in the Navy. It gets better and then then they have to earn the rest o f their phone calls home. Enjoy the letters. Give their address to everyone so they can at least send a card to him. Take care! It will go faster than you think!
