Well, I can assure you that it will go faster for him than it will for you. What I heard a little over a year ago was, "The first few days totally suck, the first few weeks kind of suck, and after that, the divisions kind of get their $hi+ together and it's OK. Eight weeks is a short time, and make sure you can get to PIR; it is totally AWESOME. Once in A school, he can have his computer, cell phone, etc., - more like real life.

Hello! my son left on Sept 6th. Got the box a few days later. My oldest son beat me to it so I think that softened the blow. Got the first full letter and cried HYSTERICALLY! seriously he ripped my heart out of my chest. He was so over the top homesick and was talking crazy. We received a real phone call from him after 3 weeks. Oh he was upset and I don't know how I managed to keep it together but I did. His father and I just tried to comfort him and tell him it will get better and everything will be okay. We told him how proud we are. It was at that time that I felt at ease. I just needed to hear his voice. Just received a much different letter yesterday. He was joking and talking about things that made us laugh. He sounds so much better. He realizes that he had to go through the detachment ( so he called it) period. He is kicking butt on all the physical stuff. Has learned better study habits. Has been a fabulous role model for his older and younger brothers. He has a deeper respect for his dad and I and realizes all he took for granted. I could not be more proud. Make sure to write your son a lot and have friends and family write him too. My son said he loves all the letters and to keep them coming. Really a moral booster. My letters tend to be on the light side and silly but he says he wants me to keep them coming. God be with you, your son and your family.

I was fortunate enough to get two calls last night. One when he used one of his friend's phone when he was in Chicago and the other when he arrived in Great Lakes. He talked about flying on the plane since this was his first time. This call was about 5 minutes. The Great Lakes call was interrupted twice and he called back. I think he talked 3 seconds but it was the best 3 seconds I ever had. I am looking for the box and the next time he calls in three weeks.
