My son woke up early (as trying to get into the habit since he is normally a night owl) and once I got up...he rolled his computer chair into my room and we began our talk.  First we were reviewing all the items he needs to know before he leaves for BC....then it turned into talking about family and how each one will be missed....then we talked about the vehicles and clothes....then we talked about his future and where he sees himself in a year, two, 10 years down the road.  He shared with me about his ambitions he would like to accomplish within his Navy career.

I am just so proud and feel so blessed that he opened up with me.  Not that I won't be teary when he leaves or miss him like crazy but just to have those few hours this morning....means the world to me.

Letting go and letting God (and the Navy) take care of my precious child is hard but I'm trying!!!

Hello Chas'mom,

My son is named also Chas, short for Charles, we had a talk today on the way to the dentist, much like you with you son, talked about the phone cards and the things that he needs to have in his wallet, the phone numbers and addresses and stamps.  We have not talked much up until today.  He leaves on 9-26.  It coming fast.

Hi Kawilde, My son is short for Charles also.  My son is leaving 8/6 so I think he will be more talkative the closer it gets....He (mine) seemed to go through a withdrawal state for a week or so too before this past weekend...which worried me but all seems to be okay now.  I read somewhere that is normal....or at least has happened a few times to others.

Small world, isn't it?  I wish the utmost best wishes to you and your Chas...we'll have to stay connected through this wonderful site.

Hi Chas'Mom,

It is so great that you and your son had this time to talk, cherish it and hold it close to your heart <3 The one thing my son and I did not talk about was clothes and belongings and it took me a full week before I could even go into his room without having a melt down. :)

I completely understand about "letting go" and it has probably been the most difficult aspect of this whole journey.

My son also went through the week before leaving and was unsure and became very quite, even though this has been his dream since he was in the 4th grade. I think the hardest thing was getting a letter from him begging me for advice and me knowing that I couldn't "get" to him. He did re-focus and all is well. Bryce's PIR is in 25 days August 17, 2012 and we cannot wait!

Thinking of you, your family and recruit...if you need anything just let me know :)

Awww Kellie...thank you so much!!!!

25 days...another countdown but how exciting!

Yes, we still didn't talk about clothes in too much detail...I truly believe he knows Mom will take care of it....and I will in time.

Our morning together was such of a blessing and yes through those dark nights, that is the memory I will cling to most.

Hi everyone! My son left for BC on June 5th and will (fingers crossed) graduate on August 3rd! Our son withdrew from us quite a bit before leaving for BC. I had a really tough time with it and actually got ANGRY. I couldnt understand that when I thought that he should be spending more time with his family, he was spending much less. His father explained it to me that people deal with things very differently and our son needed to put more space between us so that the leaving wouldnt be as difficult. It made sense to me but it still made me sad and angry. He left both his father and I letters to be read after he left.....OMG!! Wow, the tears could have filled a bucket. He said that that he was crying when he wrote them. I guess his dad was right, he had to do what he had to do to get through this time.  When the letters started coming from BC, it was different, he embraced us whole heartedly, even asked about his brothers whom often annoyed him to no end! He sounds like a much different boy though, not that the boy that  I sent out to GL wasnt great but you can tell that he is NAVY now. Be strong moms......it will be ok!!
