It's 2 A.M. Friday morning. I watched him swear in yesterday morning. I took his picture. I smiled and told him how proud I was. I got the treasured 15 second phone call. I didn't cry... until now. Rats.
I know it will get easier (I hope). I remember Basic Training for the Air Force. I wonder if it is very different. I know my son. I believe in him. I hope he learns to believe in himself. I feel like the momma bird that just kicked her baby out of the nest and said, "FLY!" Momma birds stink.
I watched him through the glass windows this morning as they practiced for the swearing in ceremony...Outside Looking In... I feel like just the observer now... I'm not the person he looks to for answers anymore. I won't get those crazy phone calls at 3 A.M. with him saying, "Hey, you awake? I can't sleep. Wanna talk?" This is a new season for us. I'm so proud of him. But, it's a little like watching him walk off to kindergarten class... so confident... and nervous. Me, on the Outside Looking In... Then and now.
*Deep breath* Okay. I'm better now... because I remember that he IS my son... and I'm tough as heck! HA!!! I'll still be "Mom" when he's done. He'll still be my son. But we will share a new bond... service to our country. He is the man of honor I taught him to be. My sailor son.
You will always be inside his heart. It's so internalized that they are not even aware of it.
aww your post has me tearing up- It'll be me looking in the window in a few short months, stay strong, stay postive, and before you know it you'll be hugging him at PIR. I wish him well and a quick and uncomplicated 8 weeks. God bless you and your family...
