Hello, I am new here and am not sure how to navigate this website :-) My son is in Basic Training for almost three weeks now. Today he called and told us we can visit him for thanksgiving! Hooray! I did not even know they were allowed to go out. I just wanted to hear what other moms' experience has been with seeing their child for thanksgiving and what are good places to lodge and eat :-D Thank you all so much!
Chiming in...I DO NOT like the mobile view for this site. It is very limited. Desktop is much better. I just pinch-zoom so I don't kill my eyes too much.
I have started Groups on my phone and can do almost everything on it that I can do on my PC or tablet.
Christina - You should (or already have received) receive the Adopt-A-Sailor form from your Recruit.
Thank you, but I did not receive any forms yet... today we will call the recruiter here and see if he has any insight. I also have a hard time knowing where I am on the site LOL! :-)
Cristina, the recruiter cannot help. If your recruit is in the 12/04/2015 or 12/11/2015 TG, then email the PAO and inquire. If your recruit is not in one of those TG's, then he is not eligible for the Thanksgiving Adopt a Sailor program.
I have seen several posts about not trusting the address the recruiter provides and to wait for a form letter. My DS left on 11/4 and the recruiter did give me an address with his ship and div listed. He said that the graduation date has not been updated because they are projected to graduate on 12/31. At this point I am not sure what I should do. My instincts tell me to start writing letters and send them right away, and as far as reserving flights and hotels for graduation, if it is on New Years Eve, then I better act now. To me it does not make sense that his graduation would be that day, with Christmas being the week before. Or do they accelerate the program during the holidays? Does anyone have any advice?
Denise, Go ahead and make your flight and hotel reservations, but hold off on sending letters. Yes, by counting 9 Fridays, PIR is 12/31/2015. It is moved up a day since 01/01/2016 is a federal holiday. Training is 6 weeks after at least 4 P-days so yes, it is very possible that PIR is that day. There are usually extra days at the RTC so the 3 holidays (Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas) will not delay PIR.
My daughter is graduating Dec 11 and flying out the next day to her A school. what are the chances she will be home for Christmas?
Robin, it all depends on her "A" School. Some commands allow the new Sailors to "go in the hole" on Leave over the holiday stand down and others do not authorize Leave until after "A" School.

Bonnie, The RTC will stream PIR live at http://www.livestream.com/usnavyrtc and http://navylive.dodlive.mil/ beginning at 8:45 am CST on the day of PIR for those who are unable to attend in person.
