Well the box arrived yesterday. I hesitated with opening it, but managed. I laughed because all his stuff was just tossed in - typical of him not to fold his clothes or pack neatly! As I searched for his cell phone, I came across his watch. This immediately brought tears to my eyes. They say the recruits are allowed a watch while at Basic Training. The only watch my son had, was a bit too fancy for that environment so I went out and bought him a modest watch, which was also waterproof for 50 meters, so he would have no worries about it getting ruined. Knowing he would not be home for Christmas, this was a perfect gift! We spoke about it and he was happy to have something to take from home, that he could keep with him. Now he doesn't have it, and well it hit me pretty hard.

I'm sure it is hectic and confusing - especially after being up 24+ hours at that point.  If they made him send it back, it will be better than if he accidentally sent it back (for him anyway) as I know he was very happy to have a little piece of home with him.  Oh well.  In a few short weeks I can hand it back to him and see his beautiful smile!

My eyes are full of tears.  The best to your new recruit.  Our son leaves January 4th.  I'm dreading the "box"  Happy Holidays.

Yes, his pant legs were still rolled up as well.  It wasn't about him knowing what time it was, the watch was sentimental.  It's ok, like I said, I'll see him soon enough and be able to give him his watch back.

I would probably have cried too. My son left Dec.14 and we have not received the box yet. I too bought a $25 watch to send with him and he was happy to wear it there. We will see what comes home. Its only been a couple days but I miss him tons!

I have officially made it through a week!  Still no form letter, but I did get the address from the recruiter, so that is something.  I'm anxious to get a letter and Christmas card to him before Christmas.  Christmas will be tough.  Being with family and all their children... enough said!
