Today has been hard.  My son has been in GL for a week now and not being able to speak to him, or even text him, it getting to me.  Every time my phone buzzes, I think of him.  People keep sending me emails that make me turn into a big blubber head.  You know those emails going around, intended to remind you of the true meaning of Christmas.  I can't listen to the radio anymore, because all I hear is sad stories.  Apparently my phone was buzzing in the middle of the night and I did not hear it.  Now I'm afraid to sleep because I never want to miss a call.  He is fine, I know this.  I am strong and I will be fine myself.  Maybe a good night of sleep will do me a world of good!

I wore my sons shirt today, my assistant thought I was going overboard. To me it represented that I missed him and that even thou he was gone, I was with him. I honored him with sporting his shirt,  Hey, tomorrow,,, I just might pick another of his shirts to wear..

Thank you all for your kind words.  I know he is definitely going through withdraws not having a way to text or email people.  I also believe it is a humbling experience for these young men & women to be isolated from all the technology for awhile.  They will come out with a new appreciation for good old fashioned conversation!  I know he is fine, believe me I know, and I don’t intend to be a whiny butt.  I was just telling someone that his time at Basic will be the easiest time to get through.  We know they are safe where they are, isolated, but safe.  We also know where they are, without a doubt.  For us, we had a rough couple of months prior to his departure.  He had this crazy girlfriend who was doing anything and everything to keep him from the Navy and even his family.  I would not give up on him, no matter how tough the battles became, and believe me they were unpleasant, to say the least.  We (family) all held our breaths every day, hoping for a victory over this girl.  She may have won some battles along the way, but his family won the war!  Hooyah!  We know we won, because in the end he ditched the crazy girl, he tried to make things right with his family, and most importantly he kept his commitment with the Navy.  I am quite sure, we are not the only parents who have had to deal with such madness.  Now, I’m doing everything I can to prevent this crazy girl from getting the address to write him.  Until now, I did not realize this information was made so public.  She will only send him depressing letters and possibly (out of spite) send him a package – and we all know what will happen to him, if a package arrives.  I want him to grow up and be his own person, yet I can’t help but continue to be his mom and look out for his best interest.  Once he completes this first leg of his journey, I will have to back off and let him live his life and deal with the issues on his own.  Until then, I am still his mom and I’m not giving up so easily.  Only 8 more weeks until the next victory!

Dee = I only wish I could wear my son’s shirts!  You keep wearing them and don’t let people laugh at you for it.  There was a Burker King on the base, at MEPS, so we ate there and they were giving away these BK bobbleheads.  I didn’t want it, but then I thought that I can tape a photo of my son’s face over the King's face and have a bobblehead son to hang out with me.  As soon as I got home, that is just what I did and I was able to send a photo to my son’s phone while he was waiting in Chicago and he laughed so much!

Matthew = It is my understanding they receive mail almost daily, but can only write letters on Sunday's.  I sent my son with envelopes and stamps and he was able to keep them.  I know he will share stamps if he finds out someone needs some.  If you sent stamps he will get them and be able to keep them.  If I had to guess they only had a minute to write something on the form letter, so I imagine it was difficult to think of what to write under that pressure.  My son's note was stressing to me to reach out to all his friends and give them the address to write him, since he has had no time to write.  I guess he is concerned that his friends will think he forgot about them already.  The only personable note he made was he didn't get to sleep the first three days there.  I'm hoping he had time to write yesterday and I receive a letter later this week - that will make the Christmas weekend a bit easier to get through.  I'm hoping everyone receives a letter from their recruit before Christmas!
