Yesterday was the beginning of this huge journey for my daughter. We went in and signed the parental consent form. Now, she will go to MEPS next week. This is such an exciting time for her. I do keep asking her everyday, "are you sure this is what you want to do?" and "have you changed your mind yet?". But I know that her answers will "yes" and "no". Especially since she is passing up a dream of hers to go to the college she has wanted to and planned to go to for 4 years for nursing. And then got accepted to her father's alma mater. As her facebook status says "accepted to Winona...accepted to Gustavus...Still joining the Navy!!"

I am so proud of my daughter. She has always had a good head on her shoulders. And I know that this will be something that she will succeed at. I can't wait to see the woman that she will become...

The Navy will be a wonderful experience for her. I'm sure she will succeed in whatever she does, and you will be so proud of her. My son is finishing Boot Camp, and I know this is what he wants, so that helps!!! As long as our children are happy, mom is happy. Best Wishes to you both!!!

Thank you! By knowing she is happy with this decision is what is making it easier for me. If she didn't have a choice, I think it would be totally different.

Good Luck.  I too recently signed the parental consent form.  He leaves for boot camp on August 23rd and from there goes to A school in Pensacola FL.  I am so proud of his decision. I have never seen him so excited to do something!!!    I wish you and your daughter the best of luck!  BTW- are you talking about nursing school in Winona, MN.?

Thank you! And best wishes to you and your son. Yes, she was going to go to Winona for nursing. I would love if my daughter won't have to leave until August. She turns 18 in August so it would be nice for her to be home.

My son did DEP and it was a great year for him while he was a senior in HIgh School to get ready for the Navy. He also choose this instead of the college he was accepted to . He has now gone through Boot Camp, A School and is in his first posting in Key West and does not regret his decision.

Mom, you will be fine. My daughter made this proud and exciting choice her senior year of high school and has graduated boot camp February 4th and is still at Great Lakes for her A School. You are lucky to have found this website before she went off to bootcamp.

Your daughter has made her choice and you should be so proud, to me its remarkable to see these young ladies pull the same weight as the males and make it. My daughter is loving it and she is a tough cookie so nothing gets her down and when it came to boot camp at times she was "bored", lol. If I can offer you any advice along the way don't hesitate to ask me, its a lot different for a mom of a daughter than that of a son because we always have that feeling of them being that soft, delicate young woman when in reality they can be that but a sailor too. I would love to help you along the way for it won't be easy on you when she enters boot camp. Not being in touch with your child as much as you want is very challenging on the nerves but its a part of the process for the Navy to cut the apron strings. The Navy breaks them down the moment they step off the bus and into the processing building where they will spend their first week but by the time you see your young adult Sailor at PIR (pass in review, aka:graduation) you will be amazed at the responsible, mannerly young adult standing in front of you! They break them down but build them back up to be the individual they need to be to go forward in their new and successful career.

You will find a lot of support on this website from a lot of MOMS that either are going through the same point and time you are to those of us that have been there and can offer what to expect.

Cindy I am here if you need any support or questions answered.
