Life is funny, you know? The day we dropped Erik off at the recruiting office was the single most sorrowful day of my life. My grief was so strong it triggered my gag reflex and I wanted to throw up. Thankfully I didn't, but I did stand there in that "lonely" corner strip mall crying and gasping for breath. Thankfully my husband took me in his arms and my sorrow was private.

Knowing Erik was simply going across town to spend the night at the airport rubbed salt in the wounds. It would have been easier had he flown to Great Lakes that day. But no... My son was a mere 45 minutes, and a thousand miles away from his Mommy. We texted that night, and at 5am the following morning I had the most precious 20 minutes with my son as we texted back and forth. His last text to me ended with, "Pray for me; running silent now."

Running silent. How prophetic.

That night I pulled myself together to work with my daughter on her wedding invitations. Along about 7:30 I realized I didn't have my cell phone with me. With a jolt I ran downstairs and out into the garage. Sure enough my phone was in my car and I missed my son's phone call! I just burst into tears. Why? How can that be? What purpose can there be in denying me my last words with my son for the next two months? [Side bar: He called again at 11pm and we were able to talk to him.]

Running silent...

I recovered, dried my tears and became angry at myself. I'm very experienced in beating myself up and as I came back upstairs I was ranting about my stupidity and forgetfulness. How could I, on that night of all nights, forget my cell phone? Why? Why? Why?

Then I listened to his message... It was happy, joyous and full of excitement! And it has become very precious and dear to me and I am thankful for it. Why? Because I can listen to it over and over and over again, as many times as I want. Whenever I need to hear his voice, I can; and every time I play the message, he is right there with me.

And now I know why I forgot my phone and left it sitting in my car. God gave me a gift that night; the gift of my son's voice.

wow, what a blessing to be able to listen to a voicemail specifically for you. A lot of us are calling our kids voice mail just to hear their voice. God always know what we need. I
