Travel from TF Green to New London, Ct (Groton) Subase

My daughter is married to a sailor attending A school in Groton and I am trying to help her get there from TF Green airport.  I think the solution is Amtrak from Providence but am posting this in case anyone knows of any other affordable options or if the Navy provides family transport....  Thanks to all.  Being from Houston, we are not that familiar with public transport so this has been a challenge.

Thanks.  This appears on the airport website so have investigated to see about schedules etc.  We think taxi to Providence Station and then Amtrak is the way to go but I just wondered if the Navy shuttled family for holidays, etc.

I've been googling, looks like MWR offers a holiday shuttle service for $30, but I can't find dates.

Avoid Greyhound if she's never traveled alone before,  It is not for the faint of heart.

This is the entire New London guide, the ITT office has a number listed (toward the end pf the document) and they would have shuttle information, if it exists.

Sweet Caroline you are well-named!  Thanks so much but we just found out yesterday that she will not be able to go as something happened with her husband's leave (not getting it) so not much point to the trip.  Thanks again for your kind and generous offer!

I found this post/thread while poking around and would like to add an "out of the box" option that I recently became aware of while searching travel options for some completely different needs.

Newark (yes, New Jersey) Airport (airport code: EWR) has a FREE (with train ticket) monorail to a nearby Amtrak Train Station. Amtrak will get you from New Jersey to New London, CT in a little over 3 hours for $52 (afternoon) or $72 (evening). The train has a snack car and free WiFi. You do have to manage your own luggage on the train and there are some restrictions to amount and weight. Once in New London, if you need to take a taxi, you are about 5 miles from the base.

While this may seem a little out of the way, I can imagine that Newark serves many more areas of the country with direct flights than either T.F. Green (PVD) in Rhode Island or Bradley (BLD) in Hartford, CT and neither of them seem to have convenient public transportation to Groton. If you can get to Newark non-stop from your departure city as opposed to making a connection to PVD or BDL, the Newark to Amtrak might even be quicker??

All of this is theoretical since I haven't personally tried it yet (I usually avoid using EWR since it's a pain to drive to, I will keep be checking it in the future since I'm in the New Haven, CT area and now I know about the EWR-Amtrak connection) FWIW, if you're still reading this lengthy post . . . New Haven's Union (train) Station has an airport code of ZVE and some travel sites recognize it. Continental Airlines actually has a "flight" package that treats the train ride as another air connection into New Haven. The additional train ride from New Haven to Groton if you book that way adds $16 and takes about another hour.

All that being said . . . I firmly believe that we are all one big Navy family . . . if you anyone here is trying to get into Groton to spend some time with a loved one and finds a good flight into either Hartford, CT (BDL) or White Plains, NY (HPN), neither of which have convenient public transportation to Groton . . . message me here and I may be able to give you a ride. I work second shift so I'm available in the AM or early afternoon.

Ken, this is very useful information - thanks! I just returned from Groton on Sunday after driving up with my daughter to get her settled in her new home. She drove me back to the airport but, since she is about to have a baby, it would be very convenient for her if I were able to get to her home without her assistance. You are right, Southwest (my preference) does not have any nonstops to PVD. I will check out EWR. Thanks, again.

You're welcome!

Play around with options . . . I just looked at some random dates a month away. Round trip, Houston to EWR on Southwest, flight only was about $290. Amtrack added about $40 each way.

Round trip on Continental, Houston to New Haven (ZVE) which includes part of the train ride was $227 then you just need to buy the New Haven to Groton train ride @ $16 each way. Saves over $100

I'll never understand airfares . . . we have family in east Texas. We used to fly down regularly for Thanksgiving and it was always cheaper to fly into DFW then on to Shreveport than it was to get off in Dallas?
