Vehicles are allowed at some "A" Schools and not at others. You can check in Logistic Specialists, Sailors attending A School in Meridian, Mississippi, and Meridian Mississippi A School family&friends and see if a privately owned vehicle (POV) is allowed. Yes, he may be allowed to have a POV at his first duty station. It will all depend on where he is stationed.
Since the "A" School is only about 9 weeks, he probably cannot have his POV there. If he can, that would require a chit.
My DS didn't have a car at A School (Logistics - Meridian) but I'm not sure if he could have or not. I know that the couple of times he left base he went by taxi into town.
He did end up buying one at his first duty station (Okinawa) because it rapidly became a necessity - he did not have his shipped from home (not sure if that was even an option) but he said most buy there and then re-sell when they leave - the biggest expense is the road tax and insurance.
I did send a message to my DS to ask if he remembered the rules at Meridian - it's the middle of the night in Japan so it'll be a while before he replies
Heard back from DS - "You can have one, it's brought to Meridian at your own expense, they were other restrictions on them that I can't remember"
My SR is not allowed to have his own POV, He will be going to San Antonio...
My son graduated 2/3 and stayed in Great Lakes for A school. We drove his truck to him at the end of Feb. Her will be in GL thru at least mid Sept.He is not able to keep it on base, he pays to park it off base about a 40 min. walk. He has a brand new vehicle, that he makes monthly payments on. If he wasn't making a car payment, I am not sure it would be worth it.He does enjoy having his truck, it spends more time parked than not.
M'smom, yes, Nukes can have a POV. Check in the Nuke groups on the timing and on any special requirements.
