My sisters and I have been having a discussion regarding wether it is best to book our travel plans as soon as we recieve the form letter or to wait until we recieve the "I'm a sailor" call.  My concern with waiting is as I understand it we will receive the I am a sailor call anywhere from just days before PIR up to a week before and with it being at the last minute things will be booked up as well as more expensive.  What has your experience been, and what are your recommendations?  Thank you!

Thank you all! Gonna move forward with my original plan and book as soon as I get the letter. ;)

That is a great question that my husband and I both have been trying to figure out. We have the fear of waiting to the last moment and the airline tickets will be even higher cost and there will be no hotel rooms. I am interested in what others will recommend.

Joni, that was my fear too... But my sisters who will be attending PIR with my daughter and I don't want to book until they know for sure for fear of losing on the ticket. I'm thinking from all I've heard it's best to book either refundable tickets (which are outrageously expensive), Book with an airline that allows you to change your ticket (you have to find out if they charge a fee to change it) or to get travel insurance (check that a PIR date change would be a covered reason). I'm am going to reach out to a few diff airlines over the next few days to see what their policy is and go from there but it's looking like I'm going to book at least mine and my daughters ticket as soon as we get the letter. :)

Change in PIR date is not usually covered by Travel insurance!  Confirm with your insurance company!

I didn't book the first few weeks because that is where I noticed discharge for unseen medical issues, and other infractions, being pushed back with new PIR.

Our sailor graduated April 7th. We started booking when we received his letter. I booked our room at SpringHill Suites Chicago Waukegan/Gurnee, which is across the street from the the location of Sarge's Meet & Greet Thursday night before graduation. We booked the room and the car with free cancellation up to about 3 days before. Flying to Chicago the Wednesday before expected PIR, we got our sons "I'm a sailor!" call as we were landing on the runway at the connecting flight airport. Lot of planning & $ involved to wait so late to get the call confirmation, but if your sailor seems to be doing well, go for it. I'd do it all again in a heartbeat and wouldn't change a thing.
Hi. I made our travel arrangements as soon as I got the Form letter! My son is graduating next week! Airfare will go up the longer you wait, unless you are willing to take a gamble that the flights won't be full and you might get a sweet deal! One of the links I saw on this website recommended booking the flight type that can be changed. That's best, but we booked on Southwest so we could have changed if needed. Good luck!
