Hello all,

New here and my son is leaving on 9/13. He is counting down the days happily as I try not to cry infront of him. I am lost and have just been reading up on all the things to do for him and with him prior to leaving. He has to be at the recruiters office 9/13, so we are assuming he will fly out on the next day. We have a family cruise set for the second week of November, so crossing everything that is NOT when he graduates. I look forward to "getting to know" you all.

You have all my empathy--our daughter was scheduled to leave in October, but got the call that she could go mid-June--with one week's notice!  Husband and I had a trip to Europe planned and paid for, scheduled to leave on July 4.  You will receive a Form Letter soon after he ships out. That will contain your son's contact information and his anticipated PIR (Pass in  Review, or graduation) date, BUT this can change for many reasons along the way.  I attempted to find out when she would graduate by bugging the recruiter, but they really don't--and can't--know.  (So I stopped).  In the end, our daughter left Great Lakes for Nuke school on June 24, which left us plenty of time.  But she had fellow recruits who did not graduate as planned.

My confusion lies in that he gets dropped off at the recruiter on 9/13, but when does he go downtown to MEPS and onto the airport to leave for GL. That is what I am not getting, I guess. I know it says to count 9-10 Fridays for PIR, but that 10th Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, which means he would do PIR on that Wednesday, but if it happens to be the 17th we can go. :( I am crushed and just super antsy as I am a mega planner.

Hi lah5280

My ships out a week later on the 20th... my son's his recruiter is taking him to the hotel the night (the 19th) before and then on the 20th, he will swear in, go through Medical, and then fly out sometime that afternoon or evening...I, too am hoping that his PIR is the 17th...but as we know anything can happen...good luck to you and your son:)

Teachermom, I completely agree that anything can happen. We will be having a going away party for him on Labour Day. The only thing he has said is that his A school will be in San Antonio, which is about 4 hours from home. I am thankful for that. He said he is going for medic.

How awesome for you that A School is so close=) Hopefully we'll be headed to the beach to visit our boy in A School ;)
