I was looking at flights for me and my husband and 2 of my teenage boys for 10/20 PIR date and they are pretty high coming from Texas. If I were to drive would I be hitting any "bad" weather snow, ice, tornados. I have driven to Florida but never up. I know weather is unpredictable so I don't expect to accurately know but maybe soneone has driven this route before during this time of the year?

NavyMamaB - the scripted call would be difficult for both you and our recruits. Glad you are doing well. I noticed your next post saying you were taking your mother and a younger son. There are only 4 guests allowed for your PIR.  The actual amount of liberty your sailor will have depends on a lot of factors and isn't necessarily what is stated. We spent more time with our sailor at the airport in the wee hours of the morning, than we had on Friday - even though ours was suppose to have had liberty at 10:30 AM. But other Navy factors had to be dealt with prior to release for liberty.

Will your sailor be staying in Great Lakes for A school or flying out? If flying out, you want to make sure you have all the proper identification - especially for the 7 year old, in order to get the gate pass, to go through security and into the terminal with your sailor.

Something else to consider is where would you be flying out of? Dallas/Ft Worth, or driving to OKC? If flying keep in mind the cost of leaving your car parked at the airport, unless you have someone able to drop you off and pick you up. If driving a distance to an airport, you will have that drive time and expense already. - You can also look at renting a vehicle that might have as much space, but maybe less gasoline cost/mileage than an SUV. We just had the three of us and so we were able to drive our smaller car which gets better gasoline mileage than our large 15 passenger van or Honda Odyssey that we have traveled with our older children on long trips.

- I realize these are other things to think about, but you have a distance to travel and it is good to consider all of your options. But it looks like you have time. Also, I would not recommend making any reservations until you at least have the form letter with set PIR date. I am not saying your recruit will do anything wrong, but ours had a friend who flew out the day before to RTC. They should have been in the same PIR, but due to a disciplinarian action, was held back a week. Also, any little medical issue which requires more than them being "sick in quarters"  - as most were with getting wisdom teeth pulled, that they might have to take time out for, can cause a delay in their PIR compared to what is sent in the form letter.  - So, if you do plan to make flight reservations be sure they are refundable.  You mentioned more than $800. I wasn't sure if that was total or apiece, it was going to be over $1200 total for the 3 of us to fly and you still have the taxi expense or car rental from the airport to GL, and  your motel in GL. That was why we chose to drive.

The best to you as you plan - but weather should not be much of an issue, just get as much local weather news as possible. You will have some road construction on that route and especially if you travel east on I-44 into St. Louis crossing the Mississippi.

NavyMamaB,

You are right, the weather is unpredictable.  Late October is usually blustery and cold, but it can also be sunny and very pleasant.  You might call it cold, coming from Texas, but some of us in the North really like September and October.  No bad storms, no bugs!   It is pretty rare to get measurable snow that early.  Sometimes there are flakes in the air, but they don't stick to the ground.  I never think about snow and ice in October and I am more north than Chicago.  Mostly rain and wind.  It is past tornado season up here in October.  You might even see some pretty fall colors along your drive.

I live near Chicago, October is really one of the prettiest months, some rain but normally good weather.

Hi NavyMamaB, we are also in Texas and have decided to drive. It is WAY cheaper to rent a car and drive than to fly from here. It's a 19hr drive from our area, which isn't too bad.
Hello Everyone-

How's the weather in early November? We'll be driving up from Mississippi.. TIA
Thank You.. That's music to my ears.
