Getting ready for my sailors first deployment (sub) and wondering if any Nuke Moms have advice? Fortunately we'll be able to spend the weekend together prior, got a rental with a kitchen to do some home cooking. I believe there is a send-off BBQ so hope to meet some parents there. Putting some things together for the "halfway" box delivery. Hoping that there will be an occasional email, and will write letters even though there is no guarantee they'll be received along the way. Mostly I'm just bracing myself for the good-bye and the months of not knowing what is happening - planning distraction and lots of prayers! For those who have been through it, would appreciate any words of wisdom. Thanks!

I will not lie -- silent deployment is challenging. But we try to keep the attitude that "no news is good news" and that helps most of the time. Make sure your sailor puts you on the list to receive updates from his ship's ombudsman and join any Facebook groups for his ship.
I keep a running list of all the silly news you'd normally discuss over dinner -- news about our home town -- like businesses closing, saw that his friend's younger brother made the dean's list, what we ate at d lunch with an elderly relative, Dad went to a lecture and most of the audience fell asleep, our favorite Superbowl ads -- that kind of stuff. Then every few days, I send an e-mail. He really likes getting that when he's deployed and it gives us something to do. The turn-around time is often very short if they are permitted a mail drop, so it's good to be prepared with things and photos to send ahead of time.
If you are your son's power of attorney, make sure everything is set up correctly and you have copies of all the paperwork. Somehow, it always seems that I'm straightening out some issue while he's underway!
I have connected with a few military moms in my local area and they are my rocks during deployment. It helps to have someone who really "gets it." Finally, deployment is a good time to take on a project just for you -- decorating or dieting or a class!
Wishing you and your whole family a good deployment. Sending hugs.

wahine4 - nuke school is close to 2 years so it will be some time before your son deploys. And at that point hopefully he will be in contact with you and let you know.
Thanks Rebecca J and Joniana - your messages were so helpful. I got the POA sorted out, hopefully all I'll need for tax filing. I'll keep the running list of updates, excellent idea, and have some projects for me. We got an FPO address - do they really get mail and if so I can send package?Getting an occasional email would be awesome but don't want to get my hopes up.
