I just spoke to my son who was removed from the Nuke Program on Thursday. He is currently on restriction. He doesn't know much, but he said he has heard that there are not many options for re-rating after you have graduated from A school. Does anyone know? Someone had mentioned at one point there is a group for those after being removed from the program. Does anyone know the name of that group...they might have answers.

I meant reassigned...not re-rated!
I'm so sorry this happened! Wish I could supply you with the information you need, but I don't know about what comes next. Did your son graduate A school? If so, he has the credentials to be assigned as an MM, MT, or ET--whatever his rate was--elsewhere in the Navy, just not in the Nuke capacity. This is what I've heard from other Sailors, at least. And the reason for the removal from the program also matters, whether for discipline, academics, medical or whatever. I do know of one young man who did not make it through a demanding training program for at least two of the above reasons, and is now reassigned to another Navy job that he likes. So there is hope.
SailorsLMom - It is my understanding that an MM, EM or ET that has graduated from Nuke A school is NOT able to directly transfer to being a regular MM, EM or ET (the ones who would have gone to A school in Great Lakes) because their training is different. I don't think that is to say, that they can't apply for one of those rates, but they would have to go back through A school training for those positions from what I understand. I do agree with your other comments though.
Yes, the person would have to be retrained for any new job, sorry if I gave the impression that it would be a direct transfer.
Soccer Mom - first I I am sorry to hear of your son's release from the Nuke Program.
Have you looked at this discussion? DTP and reclassification questions - TahoeZephyr has posted some recent information there based on her son's experience with leaving the Nuke program and changing his rating.
Also, when a sailor is released from the Nuke program and reassigned it is also my understanding that they will be rerated. From what my son has told me, even if someone that is currently studying as a Nuke ET, if they are released from that training, they can not rerate to a different Nuke rate such as MM or EM, they are completely rerated into another job in the Navy. I understand that to be the same whether they have completed Nuke A school, Power School, or Prototype.
Thanks to EVERYONE who has provided some information. I have just joined the denuked moms facebook page. I appreciate all the guidance. My son called yesterday, he said that they will probably be allowed to make a call everyday, just as a mom told me on Facebook. He said they had already watched two dvd's that morning and almost read an entire book. Only so many jokes, stories you can tell. :) He has already started to count down (32 days restriction...now 29 days). They do PT everyday, but for back medical reasons...he can't even do that right now. I can't believe it, but he might miss that part NOW!
Soccer Mom - so glad to hear that you are receiving some answers to your questions and that your son is able to call and talk to you. Time in DTP varies from one sailor to another from my understanding, but I pray that he will be able to get assigned to a new rate that he will enjoy and able to progress through his time there quickly.
Soccer Mom - I'm sorry to hear that your son was removed from the Nuke program. Remind him that it is nothing to be ashamed of and it's just a change in his journey. The FB group should be able to answer many of your questions. Keep us posted on how things turn out - and feel free to stick around ;-D
We met a sailor at our son's Power School graduation who was getting re-rated and she was quite happy. She had passed A school, but was unable to pass Power School.
I believe the re-rating has a lot to do with the individual sailor's attitude and performance. The sailor we met had tried, but just couldn't achieve and felt continually stressed to be under-performing. She said she had taken some assessments and they were moving her to a different rating that made sense with her performance and experience-to-date. I believe it was some sort of communications technician.
There was another sailor who was not having such a pleasant experience because she had been working hard for a medical discharge. The other sailors were disappointed in the resources poured into her that she was squandering even AFTER she made the commitment of her own free will. I believe she and Navy eventually parted.
