Hi from Jersey!
We are in the waiting zone which I assume we will be often. Ship date isnt for some time however can be sooner if he gets the all clear call before the ship date. I think I read that they do security clearance AT BC? I thought the recruiter said THIS wait time (several months before ship date) IS for the security clearance. I'm confused?

Good evening Ginny4 - Welcome aboard N4Ms!

I can only speak for what my son's experience was, but due to his rating, I am fairly certain he did his security clearance before he was shipped out to BC. .

I have noticed some people commenting on BCMoms that they received calls from their SR's because they needed information for their security clearance, and I was surprised that had not been done before they left for RTC.

Yes, recruits with contracts for some ratings and fields, including the Nuclear Field, which is your future Sailor's contract, often have a more in-depth security check, perhaps even a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI), while at BC because they will deal with Secret or Top Secret information as part of their duties within the fleet. Your future Sailor will have a more in-depth background check (yes, that may in process now) prior to shipping than many future Sailors will, but there may be an additional check after shipping. There is some on that in Phone Cards and Phone Calls and in the first comment to that Page (go to the last page, currently Page 4).

If additional info is needed, then your then recruit will be able to make one or more extra calls for information, usually within the first or second week after arrival.

These ladies are the best. I just want to say my son had a check before bc. When he was accepted for Nukes, he had another. I was told a more extensive will be done during bc. It depends on the job. Goodluck

Ginny4 - I saw your post in my email last night after I had just logged off and hopped back on to reply while you were still online. I did not notice that your son was joining as a Nuke. I believe Lemonelephant has encouraged you to join a Dep group (see your profile page). But I would also like to encourage you to join the Nuke Moms group as well.   http://navyformoms.ning.com/group/nukemoms?commentId=1971797%3AComm...    We have moms, dads, wives, husbands, grandparents, girlfriends on there in all stages of a loved one going through the Nuke Pipeline. Also, many pages of information and items in the discussion section that can help you.

I realize that your son's ship out date seems far off in the distance but if he is wanting information on what Nuke school will be like, I would recommend you share with him my discussion - Nuke A school daily schedule - sailor's perspective

My son is training as a Nuclear ET - he just graduated from A school in GC (Goose Creek), SC, and is currently in T- track ( a transition time between A school and Power School).  He and I have put together a lot of information to explain, at least what various things will look like for a Nuke's training during A school, and now what watch standing looks like in T-track.  There is also more information under the 'pages' section there regarding the Nuclear Pipeline as well.

You may just go to Nuke Moms without actually joining as a member and read the information, you just can't comment on anything. I really wish I had found this site back when my son was still in DEP, if nothing else to have gained some information or been able to network with others who might have given us more insight into the Nuclear Rating, than what the recruiters are able to share.

Most importantly, while your son is in DEP, make sure he knows and understands the new fitness requirements that they will need to pass upon arrival at GL (Great Lakes, IL - where boot camp is located). You can also find that information in pages on BC Moms group. My son made it is own responsibility to work on his run and sit ups and push ups on a daily basis all the way till his ship out.. He was already a trained lifeguard  and had been on a community competitive swim team, so didn't have issues there.  But the prone float can cause problems.

I realize, this is a lot to take in. I am an information gatherer, and despite being rather involved in my son's decision to join the Navy (recruiters came knocking at our door after acquiring his ASVAB scores - it was not a direction we were initially moving towards) there were still many questions and things we just never felt like we had as full a disclosure on as we would have liked. Or. we didn't know where to look to find answers to our questions. Hopefully, the various groups and information pages provided there will help you with your son's preparation for his Navy journey.

All the best to your son, and big Navy Mom Hugs for you.

My SR was in the DEPS program from November to April. He was suppose to ship in May, but he took another job to ship early. The good thing is that I have received 2 calls from him the first 2 weeks (last Tuesday and yesterday) so information. I'm not sure if the additional information is because he took a different job, but it has been a blessing to this mom missing her SR!

Hello Ginny4,  It all depends on what Rate your sailor is going for.  My Son had his clearance before leaving for boot camp (it is quite high), he has a friend who graduated boot camp, stayed at Great Lakes for A-School, and has been on hold at Great Lakes waiting for Security Clearance.

I think that it just depends on the situation.  I was glad that my son had his before he left for Boot Camp/
