Welcome! As long as he classes up in a reasonable amount of time I'd think your chances will be good. My daughter spent time with us after she'd been there two weeks. Drawback was that she had not phased up so she had to wear her NSU every where. Of course I loved seeing her in uniform
Nursemom - These are two good resources on our NukeMoms site - Nuke A school daily schedule - sailor's perspective (my son helped me write this information that is in the discussions, and I am continually adding to it.) In the pages to the right of the main Nuke Moms group you will find this - *Your Sailor's Schedule Upon Arrival to GC which shares information on travel and phasing up as well, it explains the distance they can go, I believe. Isle of Palms should be within 75 mile radius from being down with my son in April for his A school graduation.
We also have a discussion on sightseeing in Charleston as well, I have been intending to post our sightseeing trips there, but things have been busy at my house since returning from our trip there. I would also recommend going to Charleston Visitor Information online from their Chamber of Commerce.
Your sailor will have the best and most accurate information on phasing up and liberty or leave time available to him, once he is at GC and settled in and hopefully classed up quickly.
The
Class up or start class. Sometimes it takes a week or two for enough sailors to get there to form a class. It all depends on when your sailor gets there and how many people are waiting.
Nursemom - there is a "Sightseeing in Charleston" discussion that has some links for some fun places to visit. Look on the main nuke page and you will see it. Also, feel free to add it!
