OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Please note! Changes to this guide happened in October 2017. Tickets are now issued for all guests, and all guests must have a ticket to enter base. A separate parking pass is no longer needed to drive on to base for parking.

Plane tickets
PIR is not set in stone, has anyone had to change tickets? Anyone who has traveled to Great Lakes during Thanksgiving week what can I expect for driving conditions and any suggestions on easiest way to get rental car? There in a lot to coordinate with car rental and picking up tickets the day before during Family Welcome Center hours. I am afraid we might have to come in 2 days early just to ensure we can pick tickets up the day before.

Tryla... our plane actually landed at 2:45 on Thursday. And we had our car rental at the airport. And we had plenty of time to still get our tickets Thursday around 5:36 is when we picked him up I believe

I traveled near Thanksgiving. It was cold, 20 degrees or so. I actually flew into Milwaukee and on the drive south, saw a vehicle hit black ice, do a 360 before going backwards into a ditch on the side of the road. So be aware of weather conditions during your travel times.
Thanksgiving travel will make everything slower,more crowded, and probably more expensive, so factor that into your plans.
When I went, it was in the time before having to pick up tickets, so iI can't comment on that.
If it works for you, you might consider Milwaukee as your destination airport, as it is smaller and car rentals are easier to deal with. If you do this, however,you might need to add a day if you are going to see your new sailor off from the airports in Chicago area. -

All I can help with is info on the car rental. If you are flying into O'Hare, you have to take the shuttle to get to the rentals. We rented with Alamo and it only took us about 5 minutes to get there once we got on the shuttle. We took the redeye and got to Chicago around 8:30am. We were able to get the car and drove straight to the NEX to get tickets. We got there about an hour after we picked up the rental. Now, my ex and his wife arrived in Chicago at almost 6pm. They had a few issues dealing with their rental and busted butt to get up to the NEX for their tickets. They barely made it, but the were stressed to the max.

I also flew into Milwaukee and drove. Although I'm used to driving in traffic and on freeways the thought of driving in Chicago intimidated me. It was a breeze to get to the car rental and the drive was easy - about an hour or so. We even stopped on the way at the home of an old friend who had moved to Wisconsin a number of years ago and had about an hour visit before heading out again. We still got to the Navy Lodge before dark, but we probably had a relatively early flight (I can't remember that). It seems like something I'd do so I wouldn't be driving on unfamiliar roads in an unfamiliar car with unknown weather in the dark. My son graduated Thanksgiving week as well but the weather that year was pretty mild - cold but no snow or ice. This was before you had to pick up tickets so I don't have any info on that but my feeling is if you fly in early enough - regardless of flying into Milwaukee or Chicago - you should still be able to get to Great Lakes in time to pick up tickets - barring any unforeseen circumstances of course. I also agree to keep an eye on flights and either wait a little longer or pay a little more to have the option to make a change to your tickets if you need to.

If I was buying tickets to go to PIR, I would fly Southwest. You can change tickets without getting penalized.

Most airlines will allow you to buy insurance for your flight and I don't think Southwest even charges a fee. I think I paid about $25 fee to be able to change if I needed to through American Airlines. Sign up for the advantages of any airline you may plan on using in the future. You get points for each flight.
I rented a car directly at the airport (they have shuttles that will take you to your rental agency there) and went through Expedia whom you can also purchase insurance through for all of your reservations for flight, hotel or car.
I've never had an issue with any of my reservations and go again at the end of this month for A school graduation.
