My son finally had a meltdown last week about how much stuff he needed to get but either didn't have time for or he simply forgot. He requested that I post some of the things that all NUKE's need in A school. He said that a great idea would be to send them the day before graduation to the indoc address as it never changes. The address is:

                                         FN, first name, last name

                                         class: INDOC

                                         101 NNPTC Circle

                                          Goose Creek, SC 29445

This way all new sailors will have everything they need when they get their.

This is his list:

  •       -bowls/silverware
  •       -can opener
  •       -laundry det./dryer sheets
  •       -ironing board/iron
  •       -personal hyg. (body wash, cologne, deoderant, etc)
  •       -twin sheets (they are provided but my son tells me they "suck")
  •       -sneakers
  •       -black socks
  •       -white/blue t-shirts (to replace the ones from boot camp, again he says it's a quality issue)
  •       -something to do (books, video games, cards, etc.)

He also said that he has picked up extra's of Navy issued things and highly reccomends getting extra of the following as soon as you get to GC:

  •    -NSU cover (1 or 2)
  •    -dress whites cover
  •    -ribbons
  •    -pt gear (at least one more set, two would be better)

I hope this helps! Also veteran moms please add anything that you think would help.

pandalvr-there is a miniNex that is near the site that the sailors can walk to, there is also a larger NEX that is a farther distance. They can ask for a ride from a fellow sailor (my son did that for his ride to the airport and then blessed his friend in thanks with a monetary gift), my son also had a free bus pass when he arrived and was able to go to Charleston Best Buy to purchase a computer. He also purchased a bike at the larger NEX, I think, so that he could ride his bike and I have the impression he has ridden it near the site. Also, they are able to use Uber and some moms give Uber gift cards as gifts.

And never forget there is online shopping available. I have sent packages to my sailor from several mail sites, just be sure that you have their class number correct.

Hi, I saw some fitted sheets made specifically for navy bunks (I will have to find the site again-it was somewhere in the navy for moms secions.)  I just wondered if anyone knew about these.  They advertise that they really help keeping the bunk neat.  I am only guessing that the Nukes in A school will have a bunk and not a real mattress. Does anyone know?  Thanks.

Jineta, I am not sure if the sheets you are referring to are for the rack beds on the ship and subs or not. I believe the BEQ's just have either bunks or regular twin beds. My son has never complained about what sheets were issued to him. Then again, he doesn't like to spend money or have me spend extra money on him, so he will take what he gets. Other moms though have sent their sailors sheets, mattress toppers, etc. once they were situated in their BEQ and knew more of what they wanted.

My son just got to GC on Saturday- he says that he doesn’t have a desk!  He didn’t want a laptop - he actually wanted to build his own computer.... Just be aware - I took my sons hard drive, keyboard and mouse/mousepad to the airport for him, and it looks like he may have to get a laptop anyway.  I know he can’t be the only Nuke that builds computers.

The Hammer. ..so.glad you could change your flight. It will be well.worth it. Stay safe and enjoy the time with your sailor!

I am posting my reply in our group chat here for easier future referencing.

I replied to G'sNavyMom question about things her sailor might need at A school - The list above includes everything which your sailor might possibly need - HOWEVER - They are supplied with bedding and towels. So, I would just wait. As much as we want to - deck them out as we would a college dorm room - A school is really not the time to do that. - Save your money for Prototype when they have to get an apartment and live off base.  - That was when we went shopping with our son after Power school graduation and stocked him up.

Wait for your son to let you know what he feels like he needs. I did mail the fluffy Navy blanket to my son which I bought at Sarge's Meet n Greet. But other than that, he was good with what was issued. There is a small NEX very close to their living quarters and they can purchase supplies like toiletries and laundry supplies. - I think they can even purchase items such as irons and an ironing board there, but I am not sure. My son was bunked with a sailor who had been there for a few months and had those items. When he moved on, he even gave my son his electric hair trimmer.

At the time when my son was there, there was also a thrift store run by some of the Navy wives which was fairly close, but they had odd hours. - I did mail some civilian clothes to him and his tennis shoes as that was before they were allowed to take them to BC.

Very true. My son flew in on Sat and had liberty Sat & Sun so he went to the Nex and got everything he needed. I think he really enjoyed getting these things n his own. I had offered to send some things but he said, mom, I got this, don't worry.

Can we send a package to them if they're still in processing?

NucMomTami - if your son has arrived in GC and has given you his address(and he's sure he won't be moved) then go ahead and send him a package.  Just remember he doesn't have a lot of storage room.
