OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

PIR -notes
1. Do take the sarges short cut if you go to the meet & greet, he provides a short cut, the line is at least an hour long, i heard of families that missed the graduation due to that line, they got locked out.
2. Drop your sailor off after liberty by 7 pm. again there’s a line to get through the gates the line started to form and get long by 730. Two sailors in my sons division were late to check in due to that line.
3. Do get to the airport the morning your sailor is leaving to A school the uso makes it quite the experience.
4. The bluejacket manual cannot be checked into baggage with the airline on their seabags, they must carry it on, the sailors weren’t told this and many had them at the bottom of their seabags and had to empty it right there in the airport.
5. Do not take more than a few items your sailor can put into a backpack to take to A school they have to carry everything and those bags are huge. I saw parents taking suit cases... usps offers free boxes to ship out to military and i think the costs are low.

Go onto the usps website look up military shipping. My son already provided me his address, they should have given it to him... my son sent me a screen shot of the address.

kitcat23 - Good PIR notes!
I am not sure what the bluejacket manual is, I will have to ask my son about that one. He didn't have an issue with it but did with the following.
Due to several issues with his last minute orders, he had his shampoo bottle in his carry on backpack instead of packed in his sea bag - also he didn't want it to leak. It had not occurred to me that he would not necessarily know the TSA regulations on liquids. He had to leave an almost entire bottle of shampoo at the security. This was hard on him, mostly because he was embarrassed and also because he was the one who had paid for the shampoo and it was his money he was leaving behind.
This was only his 2nd ever airplane flight so it is important for us as parent's to review some of these things with our young people before they go off to boot camp. I felt bad that I hadn't thought to say anything to him.

That sucks about the shampoo, the manual was a huge deal for the kids because they weren’t told and a lot of them had to empty their bags to get the manual ... where is his A school?

kitcat23 - my son's A school was in Goose Creek, SC and he is taking his comps tomorrow for Nuclear Power School. His PIR was August 2017, so we have been out from PIR for a year. I am usually on BC Mom but due to some other family things I have been on hiatus for about 2 months now. Where is your son going to A school? - I haven't looked at your profile to see other groups you are a part of.

So your sailor will get liberty after graduation for how long? How do you know when they leave for school? What do you mean not to take more than a few items the sailor can put into a backpack to take to A school. What type items are you talking about? Civilian clothes, items?

They get liberty after graduation but you have to wait for them you get 15 minutes right after the ceremony they have to go check out and then there are yours until 830 pm. If they’re staying in Great Lakes for A school you might get to see them Sat for liberty but don’t quote me that’s just what i saw. My son left Sat morning i met him at OHare to give him his things, cell phone, charger, his boxer briefs he asked for, two pair of lounge shorts and two T-shirt’s that he put into his backpack.

NAVY4BB - Your sailor gets liberty time based on whether they are staying in GL for A school or flying out. Those who are staying in GL, usually have the weekend that they can visit with their family, but they have to stay onsite in the evening. In other words, they can not stay at your motel.
If they are flying out, they should have their orders before PIR graduation and able to tell you. If they are like my son, they won't have their orders until they have had to deal with several things after PIR, before they are free on liberty. Only your sailor is able to give you their flight information and most likely they should know by the 6-7th week of boot camp where they are actually going to A school.
I brought some clothes for my son and his phone, charger and Kindle. He packed in a small drawstring bag what he thought he wanted. He put it inside this larger backpack they issue at BC.
One of the other things that my son asked for was his running shoes and then I even ordered him an extra pair, plus extra dark socks as well as dark underwear after a short time at A school, I had another pair of his running shoes mailed to him. The only civilian clothes they can wear, until they "class up" is lounge wear or other clothes that they are in, inside their room. Again mail with priority mail what they don't take with them.

My son’s PIR is Nov 2, and because we are older parents and I am fighting stage 4 cancer, I am unable to go to graduation. His A School is at Great Lakes. After graduation, will we be able to ship his cell phone and laptop and a few clothing items to him? I know we’re not the only family that hasn’t been able to attend and it is heartbreaking to us. Any info anyone can give will be so appreciated.

I’m so sorry to hear that my mom couldn’t go due to her being in treatment for cancer as well, she had treatment the day of PIR. Yes you will be able to send some things, i understand space is limited so I’d start off by sending his phone/laptop and small items until he knows how much stuff he can have. Prayers for you.

SailorMom18 - be sure to watch PIR live stream and then you should be able to also view it when it is archived. I don't know if you are on BC Moms but Phoenixmom usually posts the link there every so often. Also if you go to RTC's website, they have the link as well.
kitcat23 is right, you don't want to send more than just the basics.

SailorMom he will be able to have his phone and Laptop as long he has room to put his lap top up, they have to have permission to leave belongings out. as far as civilian clothes I would send Undies, socks maybe some sleep pants and t shirts white full collar. but jeans and all that other he has to wait to phase up to get those.And then at that time he will notify you to send.
