My son graduated boot camp in May.  He went to school at Norfolk.  He has been in Mayport for a little over two months.  I have received text messages and calls from him twice in two weeks in the middle of the night.  He is having trouble sleeping and last night he told me to help him he is not happy and to get him out of this place. There is of course a girl friend involved.  He tells me his heart is breaking!  I have told him that he is not the first to go through this.  I have also told him to please talk with someone on base!  He made great friends in boot camp and school but has not been able to do it thus far.  We are only 5 hours away and we will be seeing him next weekend and to please focus on that.  I am giving him great advice but as a Mom my heart is breaking and I want him to succeed in this life he has chosen!  We have several friends and family who have been in the Navy and they have said that the first year can be rough.  We all have that perspective on it but the late night calls are worrying me!

Thank you for any advice!

Have him head to base and volunteer to hand out Christmas gifts, deliver relief baskets, sign up for a sports league talk to unit ombudsman about getting to know people through unit activities. My son volunteered through activities desk, helped set up youth activities, clean up, took tours of historic places in Virginia and taught other sailors how to play guitar. Have him contact his unit ombudsman, go to unit holiday party etc. he should make a list of his training and job potential pay and benes now compared to what he was getting prior to enlisting! That should give him pause! Get in a group or start a group of what he likes to do or is good at. If he needs to talk to someone head to sick bay or chaplain they have seen this before and are there to assist. Good luck!

Thanks so much!  I spoke with him yesterday after he got off watch.  He still sounds really down.  I told him to get in touch with the ombudsman and check out some volunteer work.  I also asked him to speak with his chief.  He called me again last night because he could not fall asleep.  He just keeps thinking about "her".  I tried to get his mind onto something else.  We are coming this weekend and I asked him to figure out some things we can do. I know this hurt he is feeling will take time to go away but he needs to get out and meet people.  Hopefully when I see him this weekend face to face it will help!

did your son complete his enlistment? is he doing much better now? hope all ended well

Yes, he is doing great!  He just had to get over that hurdle!  Petty Officer 1st class now. He is on his way!

susud1700 - that is fantastic news.  BZ to your sailor!

that is so great, i think its a good message for new to the Navy moms

It has been almost 4 years now and he is doing great!  It is really tough for some of them the first year.  This all happened around the holidays too. The parents may be the best source of help.  It can be a stigma to ask for help from anyone else.   A sign of weakness.  This is unfortunate.  You just have to be there for them!  Everyone handles things differently though.  Usually they can figure it out.  His issues had more to do with the girl then the Navy.
