I finally got a letter today from my son with info about what he wants me to bring him. Nothing. Lol. He’s traveling to FL and he said all he wants for liberty is his phone, good food, and to go to “the mall”. Where is the mall? Is it easy to get to and maneuver to get him back to GL in time?

Gurnee Mall is just a little bit north of GL and some of them want to go there to hang out.  He may change his mind by PIR however.  It's just a mall, just like any other mall.  Really NBD.  He may want to hang out with you at your hotel and get a nice meal out on the town.

NavyMom, my son was the same way. He told me if I brought him anything it was extra that he would have to carry. Gurnee mall is close to Great Lakes and it has Rainforest Restaurant and it is pretty good.  There are other restaurants around the mall. If you go down by the Lake there is a Hot Dog stand that was really good to. After meeting up with our son on saturday to see him off to his A School. We did some exploring and there are some great museums and such also.  GPS was our friend during this trip...lol. Also I did bring a couple things to my son other than his phone. I brought him a couple of t shirts and couple of his sleepy pants. He has thanked me since because he said he really enjoyed having them at A school.

We live in the area and when my son had PIR, he wanted Portillos, which is right outside Gurnee Mills (the mall). Another great choice is Big Ed's BBQ, which is near base.

We went to gurnee mills.  Not too far away.  Like 10 miles.  Be careful as I remember alot of red light cameras.

My son wanted his favorite running shoes!! And we did send him with a pair of civilian clothes that he could lounge in his room or sleep in as soon as he was allowed to, and before I could mail the rest of his clothes to him.

We did not have time on PIR day to go anywhere and thankfully our motel was right next to a small restaurant that had pizza carry out which my husband and I walked over to, ordered and took back to the motel, where our son was able to just be in his Civiis till he had to put his dress uniform back on. He and his brother just hung out together and talked or played computer games.

You will want to take him a pair of lounge clothes for in the motel room. They can not wear anything other than their dress uniform outside of the motel room. If there is a pool and you want to go swimming, they need to know to bring their PT uniform to put on and wear while at the pool.

Thank you all for the information. I’m not sure what he wants to find at the mall - he didn’t go into detail. Before RTC GL he loved his sleep pants (sweats) So I feel like I should definitely bring those. I don’t think he will want to swim. I am bringing 2 of his best friends and they have their own room at the hotel. I’m sure they will want some time to hang out and talk over there. I’ve heard a lot of people mention Big Ed’s BBQ so I will put that out there as a choice for him! Y’all are so great! I wouldn’t make it through this without all of your help and support. Some days were really really hard.

You are welcome. That is wonderful that you can bring a couple of his buddies with you!!

We took our Son to the mall, most stores in there hive 15 to 20% off on new running shoes and much more. They have a book store where you get 20 to 25% off when you pay the first 25.00. Lots if great deals. Also target as well. We got him new shirts, blanket, sleep pants ECT. But he stayed in GL for A school. Gurnee mall is small but Verizon gives great deals on new phones and packages as well.

Thanks Phoenixmom!
