My son leaves in exactly 2 weeks, and it really hit me yesterday that he will be gone. I cried in the car on the way home from work. I know it is the right decision for him - and he will have an amzing future with the Navy - it is just so hard. My brother is also in the Navy (20+ years) and my mom told me she still worries about him, and thinks about him daily - so it never goes away! :-(  But I know I should be happy and proud for him. Just hard o hold back the tears...!  I just needed to get that out - thank you for listening!

Hi Adele and Regina126, I am so with you on this, too!  My son leaves on Dec 4th, and I also find myself tearing up randomly, and also waking up in the middle of the night worrying about him, and he hasn't even left, yet!!  We are having an Open House on Nov 30th for everyone to come and wish him well, and I have already asked my sisters to help try and keep me sane on that day, but I will likely have a garbage can full of used tissues at the end of the day from all the crying!

Baker1013 - I also plan to do what you suggested and have everyone write some encouraging words on cards so that I can send him a couple each day while he is in BC. I hope that will help him to stay strong while he is there.

I try to share my feelings about my son's decision to join the Navy with others, but I find that no one really understands how I am feeling about it. It is not like sending your kids to college, but that is what a lot of people equate it to.

This site has really been so helpful, and thank you to everyone who contributes, here!

This site & these women are a God send. I just saw my son and we talked & even talking to him makes me emotional. As much as I have mixed feelings about his decision it is for the best. So @Velvetenor I definitely understand your feelings. It is not the same as college. I just told my son the hardest part will be not being able to talk or text him every day in the beginning. Thank goodness I have you all to lean on. I hope that our boys are in the same division.

Well said @Baptistmama. Yes @Velvetnor I live a liberal part of the country where moms say "How do you fell about that? (my son choosing to serve!)" I am proud of him and it's his calling. Glad we have this site to comfort each other. It is definitely much harder than a college drop off. Mostly due to not being able to check in with him. Thanks to Informed Delivery I know I have a letter waiting at home for me tonite! Hopefully thisnis the "I'm a sailor one so that we can go to next week's PIR as planned...

@baptistmama so true. Got the letter. Great news. He is doing well. Cant wait to see him next week.

Thanks, Baptistmama, Regina126, and KimZ!

I also live in a very liberal part of the USA, and more often than not I have people respond to me with what I call the "pained face" when I tell them that my son chose to enlist in the Navy rather than continue with college (which wasn't the right fit for him). They mean well, but they can't seem to wrap their head around the choice that he has made, and how proud we are of him, even as our heart is breaking at the thought of him leaving...

Baptistmama and KimZ - best of luck to you and your soon-to-be sailors as you finish up your BC journey. :)

Adele and Regina126 - Keep strong for these last few weeks before our sons start their journey, and let's keep in touch!

This is so comforting to read ! My daughter just left for BC Wednesday . My heart breaks too but we are so proud of her . Much of my family are raging libs ! I got the looks and sympathy as if she has done something so wrong ! It really irritates me but I’m glad I’m not alone in this !

I went into the Navy as a liberal, ages ago, and have found that compared to the other branches, many sailors come out as even more liberal after service.  People hear I am a vet and makes assumptions about my views, most of the time they are very, very wrong.

I hate to stereotype and my apologies if I offended you. I’m more conservative and my husband and kids as well. My siblings and parents are more liberal and My experience has been that those are the people that are against someone enlisting . I’m not sure why . Thank you fir your service :) nice to meet you
