My son arrived in GL’s on 6/16 and started his off base ROM. He was covid tested on 6/25 and tested positive. He was transferred to on base ROM 6/28. Does anyone else have a recruit in on base ROM and if so, can you send them letters?

Karen, first of all welcome to BC Moms - I think I noticed, before I had to leave for awhile that you had just joined the group.

I will be honest, you are the first one that we have heard of testing positive that was moved to base ROM. One mom recently said her SR's division was held back because of some positives in the division, or such. Did your sailor give you any other information? Was he moved to a ship # ? If you had that, you might be able to use the address on the RTC website to maybe send a letter, but I honestly don't know that it would get to him. I am not the most knowledgeable on how the recruits that went to medical in BC, prior to COVID worked.

Generally, the SRs are doing their quarantine time off base, and then being shipped over to RTC. It is taking another week or more - so almost 3 wks, maybe 4 wks from MEPS for the family's to receive their Form letter which is what has your SR's mailing address on it. BelovedbyHim is working on putting together a COVID timeline but since we all volunteer our time on here, we do what we can when we can.

At this point, I would say no on the letters, but maybe someone else will reply.

On another note, I would just like to extend my thoughts and hugs to you. I am sure the information about your son is hard enough, but when you can not be there to "nurse" them through, it is even harder. NMHs (Navy Mom Hugs)

My son sent me 4 letters from the on base ROM. It’s Ship 09 Division 744.

Karen,

This information is from RTC website: RTC - Contacting Recruits

You should be able to figure out the address from this page and see if it matches his return address, if he put one on.

That said: If you  have not received a form letter yet, which you likely have not, with his address printed inside the form letter, the likelihood of a letter actually reaching him is slim to none, from everything that we have understood in the past. When a division is formed and the form letter is mailed out with the mailing address each division has to have a recruit mail petty officer trained to pick up and deliver the mail to the recruits. So even under normal circumstances, that could take a week or two. I am honestly surprised that you have received letters versus phone calls, but then again - anything can happen in the Navy.

If you would like to write, I would just write a very generic, encouraging note, without anything personal in it and know that it may or may not arrive to him and it may or may not be returned to you.

He is calling me occasionally but he’s very discouraged so I just wanted to put a letter and picture in his hands to help encourage him.

Karen,

You could try the Sandboxx App for BC

But please NOTE - we ask you not to use Sandboxx after BC - It is not OPSEC - it is just like sending a postcard in the mail and anyone can read it, but you are able to send pictures. Again, there is no guarantee that he will actually get the letter. And do not include personal information.

I am glad that he is able to call, but I am also sorry to hear that he is discouraged. Like B'sNukeMom says, "This is just a little bump in the road." --

Hey Karen,

Welcome I didn't get a chance to welcome you earlier. It is good to have you on here. No question is ever dumb and please come and post on the main page.

I am sorry your son is sick and is feeling discourage. Maybe when you hear from him again you can tell him words of encouragement so he will know you are thinking of him. I am not sure about the letters. I know that doesn't help. It's just such a new thing for us right now with COVID happening. Hopefully we can find out.

Karen – Unless they send you an address no.  Sadly there is not a general mail address.  They moved them on base for a couple of reasons.  1. They reduce risk at the Hotel to staff and recruits there and 2.  They can keep an eye on him and monitor his condition.  He will have a much longer time in Boot Camp and it may be a lot longer till you hear from him again.  Know that No News is Good News still applies.  Did he give you any information when he called to let you know of the positive test?  All information will come from your recruit unless he is unable.  Hang tight… It’s going to be a bit and I know it’s nerve-wracking to not hear or be able to communicate!
Join us on the main Boot camp page as well.  We'll get you through this!!

I just received word that my recruit has tested positive for COVID 19 and is being quarantined. I was instructed to continue sending mail to the same address, that I received for her training, and that it would be forwarded. After quarantine, I will receive a new address when she returns to training. I hope that helps.

SailorMom - Thoughts and prayers for your SR. It sounds like you already had a form letter with a mailing address and they will probably have someone from the division deliver it to her. Good information for us to know, that at least if they are at RTC when they test positive and are quarantined, that they can still receive mail.

Welcome SailorMom

And thank you for the information. It's different with COVID so it's good to know that she can still receive letters while in quarantine. Prayers for her and the other SR's that they have a speedy recovery. Prayers for you to SailorMom. I know it's hard when they are sick and we can't be with them.

SailorMom - I was just noticing your comment here, again, and I wanted to see if you had any update on your daughter or not?  I did not know if ROM was going to be another 10 or 14 days? Be sure to stop by the main BC Mom page and let us know about your experiences with your daughter in quarantine. We do a lot more chatting in the comment section. Hugs and thoughts for your daughter.

Forgive me for not responding sooner. All is well. She is now at her school. It was difficult. I will respond to Missyo.
