For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

ANY ADVICE?
My best friend has just arrived to Chicago today. I wanted advice on what to send in my first letter and any advice on how to keep our friendship strong throughout her time in the navy (due to time and distance I worry for our friendship). All advice is welcome!

Welcome to our group. We are glad you are here. Please come over and introduce your self. No question is ever dumb. And we are all here to help you.
For your letters be upbeat, encouraging, encouraging, encouraging, funny, tell her funny stories. Try not to talk about how much you miss her she knows this but she needs to be focused and sharp while going thru her training at camp. Talk about things that interest both of you. Talk about things you both love and what is happening around home. Just let her know that you are thinking of her and that she can do this and get thru boot camp.

fatima1525 - Welcome to our group. We encourage and answer questions for anyone with a SR (seaman recruit) at BC not just Moms, so I am glad you are reaching out for answers. First of all, just know that you are likely to not receive an address from your friend. They are very busy and do not have time, except possibly some during their restriction of movement time prior to starting their BC training, and on Sundays. My son said he only had about 10 minutes to write. So, you will have to rely on receiving the address for your friend from her mother or whomever she would be sending that information to. My son appreciated all of the letters that he received from his family and friends in BC and even later in Nuke school, but he had very little time to reply. Once he was out of BC, and had a computer, emails have worked great, as have Skype or just a phone call.
Friendships are a two way street, so doing your part to keep up the friendship and communication, even if she has little time to do so, is important. Once she is done with BC and can have her phone, it will be easier to communicate and talk about what her schedule looks like. In the meantime, Kasia shared some great comments and she is correct, your friend is blessed to have a friend like you who cares about her and wants to keep up her friendship even if she goes to the Navy. Not everyone is willing to make that same sort of sacrifice.

So my best friend asked for my address beforehand and she took with her a small contact book. Unfortunately, I don't have her mom's info and I used to have her sisters, but she had to delete her Messenger. Should I worry about that? She does have my address, but I assume she would give her contact letter to her parents.

fatima1525 - hopefully she will be able to write you and send you at least a short letter. Her form letter with her ship address, once she is out of ROM - restriction of movement - will be sent to her mother most likely, as Kasia shared. There are multiple ways to see about looking up someone's contact information online - but watch, some require payment and you don't want to do that. If something happens and your friend is not able to write you, do not give up on her, hopefully you have her phone number and are able to text her. Once she is done with BC, she will get her phone back and communication becomes a little easier.
Do you have any idea what her rate or job is going to be in the Navy? That is, do you know what she signed up to train as?

Welcome! My son said the letters that just told him about daily life and what was going here were the best. He liked hearing what everyone was doing, even if we were boring. :)

Fatime1525 - Hi, nice to meet you and welcome! Yes, as the other ladies are saying, send encouraging words! My daughter always wants me to keep her updated with current events, and she also loves getting photos! I'm sure your friendship will grow even stronger when she knows how much you care and are thinking about her. Inspirational quotes and poems are great to send as well.

Here's the link to some info on letter writing and questionnaires. The questionnaires are fun because you can make up your own questions and it's a lot quicker for them to just check a box to respond. Be creative!
