How to Contact a Recruit

Hi there! I am pretty new to this group and I am just a worried mother, as I am sure many here are, right now.

My son called me last week from being in ROM for a week saying he needs to quarantine for another 2 weeks after testing positive for COVID. It was a very brief phone call.

When there, do recruits receive any medication to relieve symptoms of COVID? I am pretty traditional, and told my son to drink some hot water with ginger, honey and lemon, but he said they do not provide any of those things. Is there a way I can contact someone from his ROM location to maybe give them some home remedies that I think would help my son? I know my son just has to wait for the 14 days to be over, but just having him quarantining in a room with no medicine or even hot water does not seem right to me. I just want him to eat and drink some things that I think will help build his immune system back up and to help relieve the effects of COVID after he is recovered. Please let me know if there is a way I can contact someone to help me relay a few messages of ways that can help relieve some symptoms for my son.

jenatn, sorry but that is impossible. I had the virus and the only thing I took was a aspirin for the headache and drank plenty of water. There are mom's mom re c ruits were in ROM that might know more. I don't believe they just leave them in a room without any medical care at all. These recruits are important to the Navy and they will take good care of them. Welcome to Navy Moms, everything will be alright.

Hi Jenatn - first of all welcome to the BC Mom group. I follow a notification when new members join and I had just noticed, so I have not had a chance to welcome you personally to the group.

Okay, first of all - big deep breath In and Out. I am sorry that your son called to tell you that he tested positive and that he is not able to give you any more information than that. I honestly don't know the exact conditions of ROM, especially for those that actually test positive or not and if they are even able to get hot water, but NO you will not be able to contact anyone, and you will not be able to send him anything. 

I know this is rough, having your son almost immediately call you and give you this information when you aren't even adjusted to the great silence and having him gone from the house. But your son is under the care of the US Navy now and at least not until after BC and more communication and addresses are we allowed to mail them anything other than letters and maybe a few pictures to BC. 

Since I can't help with any of the other questions and concerns that you have - and you won't have a mailing address until at least 2 weeks after he is out of ROM, and most likely, he will not call and give you any updated information either, since he has not gone through his processing days (P-days) yet and been assigned to a division to have an address - I am going to share some other information that I hope will relieve some of your concerns. 

I was sick and tested positive with COVID and I am over 50+. I did have access to more things like your home remedies but even my doctor would not give me any medication and told me that I needed to just self quarantine. - My 20+ daughter was around me for a couple of times and had an elevated temperature one morning - it wasn't even in the fever range, and because I was sick and her job, she went and was tested. She ended up testing positive, but other than that elevated temperature the one morning and being tired from having hosting family that I wasn't able to, she showed absolutely no other signs of being sick and yet she tested positive. 

So, just because someone tests positive doesn't mean that they are going to succumb to the worse case or even minor case scenarios that are being shared in the medial.  We have a saying around here that is "No News is Good News" and especially right now, you don't want a phone call from your SR (seaman recruit) because that is most likely that is not going to be good news. Do keep your phone on you at all times and ringer on loud and answer every call - as you don't know when you might hear from him. If it is not him, then just hang up.

jenatn, I seriously doubt the Navy will make concessions like providing ginger and honey.  But he might have access to hot water and lemon.  Maybe when he goes to the chow hall (I guess that is what they call it).  I wish your son well.  Keep us updated.  Take care.
